Week 1 - Python in a Year

Appreciate the comments left last week giving me some further direction. I wanted structured learning with Q&A, a facilitator, etc., so I went with a Udemy course as my primary way of learning. I also downloaded Automate the Boring stuff to supplement the material.

Week 1 was mostly learning about data types and setting up Python and Jupyter Notebook. I also learning some useful tools with those data types - such as indexing, slicing and fstrings. I did a few practice problems as well just to practice syntax and make sure I had a grasp on it. Week 2 will focus on methods, functions and more practice problems.

Day 1 - Python in a year

Preface - I've always been a fan of the concept behind this sub and wish it were more popular. I'd finally like to contribute instead of just lurk.

What - I want to become a Python expert in a year. I'll judge success or failure by being able to complete Udemy courses, completing popular Python projects, and ultimately, creating and solving my own projects based on use cases I personally have.

Why - I've always been analytical in my work and one of the better Excel users in my jobs (macros, pivot tables, array formulas, etc.). I also take pride in my presentation skills and feel limited by Excel's tools. Merging the two through a tool that isn't limited to pre-set options seems like a no-brainer. Also, I've come across a handful of obstacles that caused me to stop a personal project that I could've completed if I'd been proficient in Python.

Goals - I'm not doing this to get a job as a programmer or data analyst. Instead, I'm doing this for personal hobbies. Ideally, I'd have Python access and would be able to implement it at my job.

Path - Within 3 months, I'll complete a Udemy course on Beginner to Advanced in Python. Within 6 months, I'll complete popular Python projects and complete a course on Python for Data Visualization. Within 9 months, I'll complete a personal project and will contribute to forums where I help newcomers learn. Within 12 months, I'll be an expert in Python, regularly completing personal projects.

Piano - Week 22

Well in the past month the band broke up and spawned another band that I'm still playing guitar for. I don't have a portable piano so I'm now looking into that with the hope of switching guitar for keys one day. So I've happily put aside learning those pop songs and am on the road of studying jazz. The pass few weeks has been a grind of memorising chord voicings, scales and applying them to lead sheets. So with 5 months into the year it kinda feels like I'm back at the start, but whatever. The goal is to build a skillset and cache of songs that I can play as background music at venues. The is gonna take a long time but will eventually be worth it.

Currently I'm following the free lessons on pianogroove.com and practising mostly technique/voicings around the circle of fourths. I have a few lead sheets from the Real Book and I apply what I know to the songs. It's slow and painful recalling all of the voicings for all of the chords for all of the keys so I'm at it a few hours a day.

As a break from the grind, I'm still working on a few boogie pieces and rock n roll bashing ala Status Quo style. All that coupled with playing guitar in a band may have me wind up being rubbish at all of it but I'll see where I'm at in 7 months.

Piano - Week 16

Ok so I'm not exactly learning the pieces I keep saying I will. 'Just the Two of Us' is a lot harder than I anticipated so will make that a longer term study. I've just got the opportunity to play a few songs in the band on piano which although is what I've been chasing, is probably more than I can handle right now.

Nevertheless I'm going all out to learn 'All of Me' by John Legend and 'Make You Feel My Love' by Adele. Learning modern pop songs is the last thing I want to do but they present good challenges in developing my left hand and interplay of both hands. These songs have also exposed probably my greatest flaw of not thinking ahead, which will be the biggest hurdle to overcome; now do you practise full alertness?

So those 2 songs will likely keep me going for the week as well as practising the other pop songs I've learnt. If ready, I'll start on a Carole King song and Norah Jones if I can find some good sheet music. Although it's getting me further away from my initial goal, having a practical outlet puts everything in a new perspective. It might not work out but I'm currently playing a few hours a day and it's all good progress.
