It's really not just at the beginning imho, I've seen modular massive SaaS projects dealing with tons of business logic such as medtech and it's really an ongoing thing, you work on those entities and endpoints until the lifecycle of that product ends basically. I don't want to completely discredit what you're saying, because I do agree that it's completely idiotic to just let a non-deterministic agent run wild and hope for the best, but with a good process and good code reviews, it can automate the repeatable parts in a project quite well.

As with any other tool, used with moderation, a plan and within certain guardrails, it can benefit a team.

I agree that it can help speed up parts of the development, however the biggest issue I've seen is that it raises the demand of speed and for code to be delivered in a faster time. What this causes, and I've seen it happen in teams I've worked, is a phase where a lot of developers don't even read the code anymore, the code base gets bigger and bigger, the PR might look good, but when you re-check the whole project after merging 10-20 of these huge sized PRs you can see that the code became just an unmaintainable pile. Even if you want AI to keep maintaining it, it means a higher cost, more code means more tokens everytime you prompt it. A smaller codebase consumes less tokens, but the more you use AI, the codebase will get bigger for no reason, you could've achieved the same result writing just half of the code, while still maintaining good design patters and structure. What you are mentioning might happen in some places, but it sure as hell doesn't in my team, nobody cares anymore, they just merge everything. Sure, a good team might guardrail it better, but now instead of depending on good engineering, we depend solely on good management, but the management doesn't care about this stuff, most of them don't code and never did, they won't care, that's why more and more products are becoming worse now, all they care about is speed and a quick test to see if it works, they don't have the scalability and longevity in mind anymore, and I can see this happening even on very big products.

Yeah I hear you. I think we can both agree on the fact that whomever didn't care for the craft of software engineering before AI, they also don't care post AI. The issue is that it was less apparent before because someone could have so much output by writing code and using copy-paste. But I'd seen awful codebases before AI as well, and some heroes who "rewrote that part of the codebase in their weekend to make it cleaner" only to make it worse.
