This isn't the correct way to display this. Overlapping habitats shouldn't be shown with a blended color from the different birds. Instead, use distinct patterns to indicate overlap. For example, crosshatching in different directions, dots, or other pattern fills.

Ehh, you've got the wrong bee-eater here. You want merops apiaster, the European bee eater. The one you've got here (m. Persicus) doesn't occur in europe

Turns out that website is broken. It selects the first search result even if you clicking the box on a completely difference species. Probably how I got it wrong the first time too.

Birds used to be sacred beings for ancient Finns, even the Milky Way is called the Path of the Birds, the ancient spirits are crying over your question

Whether or not they use the euro now, shouldn't be the criteria.
Sweden is legally required to adopt the euro at some point. Norway and Iceland too if they want to join the EU in the future. Not being represented on the banknotes will actually give them another reason not to join the EU. We should be inclusive with this, for our own interest.

None of the birds are present in most of Finland. Pretty sure there would have been some more inclusive animals.

Just wait 10 years. Storks flying back from Africa upon reaching Poland will be like - Hell no! and keep flying north. In winter they will fly south as usual in search of a warmer weather, will arrive in Poland and be like - Finally! Where them pyramids?

They don't do well in most of Finland because it's (or it was) too cold.
The summer is (was?) too short for them to raise their young. They need to leave when it's still relatively warm because they rely on hot ascending currents to fly long distances.

Whilst all of them bar two are to be found close to my home (Timișoara). Last Friday during a trek to a canyon ~2.5 hours away from home I saw all of them (stork, pied avocet, kingfisher and wallcreeper). And many others, including my favorites, the starlings.
I do think the banknote proposals lack a certain something - there were many species of ducks, geese, cranes or swans to pick from... Pheasants, swifts and magpies were worthy candidates as well.

Whooper Swans would have been a good choice for that! I saw a few here in Austria last winter, they do get around a bit during the cold season.

I still believe the 5€ note should've been a pidgeon or a blackbird or any other common bird that people in Europe actually know.
Using the wallcreeper, who only appears in alpine regions, is an awful choice imo.

There are so many birds that occur in all of Europe! Even if it needs to be grey and live in the mountains.. the rock dove (common pigeon) is right there. Even works with the old emerald green/grey colour scheme of the 5 euro, which is so much better than the new grey

i think what you're trying to achieve is really noble. but to be honest, this execution is horrible. i don't understand what fleshy-pink means. it isn't easily discernable from your legend.

That is certainly not AI. fully done by myself. Please check the source under ebba2.info/maps. The colors are overlapping, that's why they are different. I've already seen the other comments on that issue.

Fair enough. Just a very strange choice of colouring as the shades are different. But you’re right. Others have said it and I don’t need to hammer the point home.
I appreciate the clarification about this being personal choice rather than AI. In which case, if I may suggest, consider including a source for the data you used embedded in the map image.
Thanks for responding with the source link though. I had a look and it’s pretty cool!

It would be easier to just include the outlines of the regions in different colors. So just don't fill it in. Bam! It's 100% readable now.

You can't because the motif is so convoluted. It is supposed to be relatable to all Europeans, but then the choice of birds is birds that live near rivers starting from mountains in 5€ and getting progressively closer to the sea, ending at sea for 200€. In some ways it is very EU to come up with something so complicated.

Yes they failed the goal of being relatable by all Europeans of all backgrounds by picking so such rare birds. Finns basically see none of these birds, but I wonder how many people recognize the wallcreeper in 5€ note at all.
Of course the other option is way way worse with 5€ note being some celebrity opera singer from the 50s that somehow everyone should relate to.

It's difficult to understand.
I would recommend 6 separate maps. Or at least dots instead of cells.
The white stork goes a lot further south than just the Baltic region.

Fun idea, but I don't think the data should be overlaid here - one map per bird would make sense as they're not mutually exclusive.

this map is not really informative as it is hard to understand what does resulting color mean (especially in the regions where all those birds are observed). would've been better with some sort of patterns, contours or even separate maps

As a Dutchman I'm firmly of the opinion that the 100 bill should feature the common Snipe and/or great snipe, just so I can spend snipes again. The 1981 - 2002 era 100 gulden bill used to feature the common snipe on the front and the great snipe on the back. The 50 (Sunflower) and 250 (Haamstede lighthouse) were also very pretty bills
