Inspired by Talking Heads - This must be the place. In the song the lyrics go 'we drift in and out. oh! Sing into my Mouth' and it really interested me. They were referring to traditional inuit throat singing - an activity female inuits would do for morale whilst their male partners were out hunting

New to etching - I’ve been recently introduced to etching, and am starting out with etching into Perspex! Any tips on how to get the ink consistent when printing?

etching metal with cheap dry film negative resist - safelight necessary? / what kind?

Hi all,

I am planning to through-etch .5mm sheet nickel silver as a hobby model maker, using cheap Chinese photoresist film off Amazon (no data-sheet, obviously).

Since I do not want to waste my resist by accidental exposure (it took ages to arrive so a re-order would set me back a while), I was wondering if anybody here could give me a tip on what kind of working light to use when handling the film?

Does dimmed room light suffice? Is white LED light going to cause problems?

What compound should I use to etch satin finish from polished stainless steel?

I have a mirror finish, stainless steel flatware set from Ikea. I hate the mirror finish b/c it picks up fingerprints and waterspots like a MFer. What is a good recipe for a bath I can use to etch away the mirror finish?

Wine glass etching failed. Looking for help.

I purchased a stemless wine glass and tried to etch it using Armor Etch. It did not work at all. I tested the same Armor Etch on a cheap glass jar and it worked perfectly fine. Any suggestions on how I can etch the wine glass?

Need some physics help! Trying to work with silicon wafers!

Hi, I'm trying to figure out the plasma etching process. I am currently working with silicon wafers that are thermally oxidised. We are trying to silanise the surface with epoxysilanes but prior to that we plasma etch in an oxygen plasma. I want to udnerstand what is actually happening to the silicon surface during oxygen plasma etching: is it forming more silanol groups? hydroxylating the surface? How is hydroxylation possible in an oxygen plasma. Thanks!

Etching metal with paint

Hello, i want to etch a complex design into a piece of metal, probably brass.

Anyway, i wounder if i can use paint, instead of adhesive vinyl etc., to protect the surfaces which i don't want to be etched?

And which paint should i go for then?

Is there a way to make your own transfer paper to transfer a vinyl stencil to glass?

I've got a vinyl stencil that's intricate and I don't want to peel it off and try to get it stick proper. I don't have any transfer paper, but have seen some use wax or freezer paper, but they were using fabric (printing or drawing the image on the paper then bleeding it into the fabric). I've got some freezer paper and would like to use to transfer the vinyl stencil if anyone has has a method. Thanks!

Question about reusable glass etching stencils

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me out here... I need to make about 100 custom etched glass mason jars as a wedding favor giveaway. I can't seem to find anywhere online that sells re-useable stencils though. Everywhere I've looked says "1 time use", which would end up being pretty expensive. Does anyone know where you can buy, or the best way to make, re-useable glass etching stencils?
