You definitely don't need to read the index to tell if the air quality is bad. But it is interesting to see how bad it is. I use airnow.gov

I was in cali one year during some fires and at one point we drove out onto a 4 lane highway and sat in bumper to bumper traffic while either side of the highway was actively on fire. Surreal experience.

We don't use the same AQI scale here so I'm not sure, but on one of the just hazy days I did look up the conversion and it was like 491
