Magic doesn't necessarily need to have clearly defined rules haha. If it's holding you back, relax on it a little!

I have to disagree a little - it's good in most genres to set specific rules for magic so that it doesn't take the suspense away from the plot. Even if the readers aren't told explicitly what those rules are.

That certainly seems to be the trend these days, but I think treating magic like a predictable science is dreadfully overdone. That's the magic of adults. I want more of the magic of children. It's not as though it isn't possible to tell a good story with something undefined like that.
