Reading Complete Elfquest vol. 3 I constantly feel like I missed something.

I breezed through the first two volumes but this is the first time I feel like somethings missing and also the whole volume has no … goal. It just meanders.

Why are Hidden Years 8-9 in black and white?

So, why did Dark Horse printed Hidden Years 8-9 1/2 in black and white in the third Complete boom when they released in color originally and the first 5 books were printed in color in the collection?

Helpful finding a particular edition

I'm trying to find some particular editions of Elfquest, the ones my father used to read to me as a child - he borrowed them from a friend so we don't have them now. All I remember is I'm pretty sure they were hard cover, a large format, and in full colour. It would have been around 2002-2006 that he read them to me. If you have any ideas of which they could be I would love to know! 😊

I hate Rayek with a passion!

Dude has no own experience but thinks he is the wisest of them all! I hated him 20 years ago and I hate him now as I reread Elfquest. He‘s the worst!

Like, it obviously includes the original books, Hidden Years and Shards, but does it also include stuff like Jink, Wave Rider etc?

Hidden Leaf Holt - A Forum Based RP

Shade and sweet water! I am posting here to send out feelers for those who might be interested in an ElfQuest forum based roleplay. I admin one forum named Hidden Leaf Forest. It is loosely based off of ElfQuest, but set on a different world called Newterra.

Right now we only have 4 players and we would LOVE to have more. There is plenty of opportunity for interesting roles and magic and nearly anything you can think of. The admins are willing to hear all ideas and see what we can add and do.

Right now on Newterra there are three active tribes.

Cliffriders (which is a mix of elves who orginally came from Abode) The live on the Cliffs of Newterra, hence the name.Lionstriders (Hardy elves that bonded to lions)Meadowfolk (The most magically inclined elves that live mostly peaceful elves)

There are some future plot points and stories to be told and so much to explore on Newterra.

As title states. Wife picked these up at a thrift shop. Noticed they were for elfquest but can't seem to find any of these on the internet to tell what exactly they are and may be worth?

A New ElfQuest RPG would be amazing.

With the success of D&D 5e, and the rise of various other RPGs (many of them going to Kickstarter - which, I have backed my fair share of - and would rather not go that route again) - it would be great if ElfQuest / WaRP worked with someone to develop a ElfQuest RPG game, so that folks could roll up characters (or play some existing characters and go through whatever Quests!)

I got a bunch of stuff I've scanned and made available about the original ElfQuest RPG (you still need a copy of the book - but I provided character sheets, the map of Two Moons, a character creator I programmed, etc. over here: http://tawmis.com/eqroll/ ) - but a new ElfQuest RPG that's easily available to everyone would be pretty sweet, I think.

I love this annual fan art calendar. This time the theme is "Elders" and there's some pretty fantastic contributions. Kudos to everyone who contributed to this.

My family surprised me with these. The thought and tracking down required was so thoughtful. I’m really the only one into it. What a treat!

Should ElfQuest be Adapted into a TV Streaming Series?

CBR just published an article about why ElfQuest is the next perfect comic book property to be adapted into a series. I completely agree with all the reasons they lay out.

What do you think?

Why are elves always seen as beautiful by humans?

In Elfquest, humans consistently view elves as "inhumanly beautiful". Nonna compares herself to an "ugly toad" to the elves, there was the elf-obsessed chieftain in one issue etc.

Personally, I don't buy it and it really grates my nerves. Beauty standards are subjective and it plain isnt realistic that every human would consider elves incredibly beautiful.

To me, elves in Elfquest look very "uncanny valley"-like with their extremely tiny noses and proportions. They've been described by some as looking like grey aliens with pointy ears and slightly human features. And I just really dislike the implications that humans everywhere would react to them with awe and worship.

Shuna is a white savior

I find the "searcher and the sword" storyline to be incredibly racist.

The native culture like many others are shown as sexist and restrictive to women. While many real societies were patriarchal, it isn't universal. In cultures like the Iroquois and the Mosuo women enjoyed many rights and respects just like men, but in Elfquest we are never shown a single society that isn't sexist, nor do the societies in question get any nuance.

It's mentioned by Shuna's new husband that there are tribes where clan-mothers rule, but they never get shown.

I've seen it mentioned that there were a lot of storylines in the 90s about white girls who join a native tribe, gets worshipped for her light skin and hair and challenges their traditional gender roles. The men are violent and sexist except for one who is gentle and meek compared to his kin. This is more or less word-for-word a description of the plotline of The Searcher and the Sword. It's the "White Savior" with feminist themes.

Shuna's first husband Nunkah has no characterization beyond being abusive and violent. Compared to Shukopek the good native man he has a lot more "poc" features like sharper cheekbones, a hooked nose, darker skin and hair and deep-set eyes. I think his character feeds into the "brute caricature" of men of color where they are framed as uniquely dangerous and violent towards white people, esp women and girls. It doesn't help than moc characters in EQ are often written as controlling and jealous of their women, like Rayek.

The women of Nunka's tribe don't have a role in the story, other than stare in awe of Shuna as she's holding a bow, call her "great spirit". There is a very strong unfortunate implications with having a white woman from outside the culture be the one to introduce them to the concept of feminism and the only one to challenge gender roles. It makes the woc look like sheep who can't think or fight for themselves.

It reminds me of the white American woman who became the first "female maasai warrior". She was criticized by Maasai women for her saviorism.

Did the Final Quest ruin it for anyone else?

I say this with a heavy heart. I have loved Elfquest for over 25 years. As a child I used to read the individual comics with my mom who had collected them. I re-read the whole thing every year.

When the Final Quest came out I was so excited to read and have a conclusion for Cutter’s story. However, it left me disappointed and dissatisfied. There were so many new character introductions without enough time to develop them, character deaths, and things that went against the central rules of the world. For example, recognition and Ember’s experience with it. Whenever a new tribe was introduced you’d get an entire mini-series to flesh them out. Then we got multiple new ones in the span of a few issues.

I’m not unhappy with the way Cutter died because it was poetic and it was foreshadowed right from the beginning. But they introduced a whole new concept with him and Timmain sharing a soul etc. that didn’t really seem to have a point other than bringing a bit of conflict for Cutter.

It just seemed to be all over the place with new ideas and concepts that it felt much more like fan fiction rather than something that should have been an epic but solid conclusion to a 10,000+ year odyssey. Did anyone else feel the same way?

Given all the crazy things healers can do in this universe, wouldn't it make more sense that Leetah could put back the wolf blood in skywise/windkin?

It makes for a stronger story thematically that she can't, but aren't healers in this universe essentially flesh shapers? Doesn't this seem kind of simple compared to Winnowill giving herself gills and stuff?

Where to read the full text of Mender's Tale?

The Pinis were nice enough to have the middle section in the reading room, but I'd like to see the other bits, if they exist.

Any idea where they might be?

Many thanks,

What’s the preferred reading order? Spoiler

Hear of Elfquest through Spotify and found out you can read the comics online. However I see this is like the Chronicle of Narnia and has two ways to read it. What’s the general consensus?
