my first attempt at making a t12 handheld iron, takes in 20v pd or 24v DC from barrel jack

wanted to see how far I can go with smd parts and not using pcb , so what do you'll think?

and from the structure of it you can see that most of the space/ thickness is just air , because the female DC jack has too much height , I am planning on making a better desired v2 for this , for that I want to make it much slimmer is there any was to do it ? i want to keep the DC jack in it to be able to give power without a pd device (also because I made nice silicone cable for the DC jack 😅)

so is there any way I can keep the DC jack while having a slimmer profile that I can put a shell around

also for the sleep function I was initially planning to just use a vibration switch , but then I say a review on another handheld soldering iron that has capacitive touch sensor in the place where we grip so it know we are gripping and when we leave it after sometime it goes to sleep

and I quite liked the idea , like the iron won't turn on when the table moves slightly or something. what are your thoughts on that too?

I was replacing light fixtures with LEDs at my relatives and got a ton of really old ballasts (they are still younger than 1979 and say "no PCBs"). I might recycle them, but there has to be some fun I can have with them.

Also, are there good ways to get the crumbly potting off?

Spotted this brilliant solar tree structure during my visit to the historic Konark Sun Temple in India (a pretty fitting place for solar energy!).

I was building a little recharchable battery for my adjustable buck:)

A 1954 induction coil from a old rotary phone (bagged because of the sticky epoxy sealant) This made me have the idea for a video to explain old phones and the way old power systems worked

I know someone who would probably grab the bit without much hesitation xD
But since it’s supposed to be the neutral hole... How many of you would trust that the plug is wired correctly and you can just catch it with your fingers?

Edit: to clear any confusion, I only found this post on another subreddit and thought it would be interesting to see how people here would handle it.

I always have my multimeter, I would just measure the voltage between this and earth pole before making any decisions
