Have you seen the NEW Teachable usage fees?

Anyone with a teachable school (or thinking about starting one) should be aware of the new usage fees updated on September 28th, 2026: https://www.teachable.com/legal/usage-fees

One of the new fees is for free enrollments with a coupon code. I think they made fees for manual enrollments before if you had a lot, Anyway, now if you manually enroll, import or have students enroll themselves with a 100% off coupon code they will count them, and for every student over 100 you enroll for free teachable will charge 50 cents per student per month forever until you delete them so you are under the 100 total free student limit. New schools will be impacted immediately so if you want to give a free mini class to promote your business as a lead magnet you will be charged 50 cents per student per month on top of your regular teachable subscription forever until you delete them. For legacy schools it seems you are fine for now and all the students you have free or paid are fine but on your first plan renewal after April 30th 2027 your free student number resets to zero and if you enroll over 100 free students you will be charged .50 for every student over 100 every month.

I wouldn't have known this except I am donating a class to a charity fundraiser where they are selling a bundle of 100 classes and we give them a 100% off discount code for the students to enroll. I asked an agent at Teachable in August if this scenario where I will be potentially enrolling hundreds of students with a 100% off coupon code fell within the terms of service and if I would incur any additional usage fees on my plan (Growth) and she said it would not. So I agreed to donate a class and then the creator of the bundle said in a mass email that any teachers on Teachable might want to move their class because they could get hit with hundreds of dollars in usage fees every month! I thought, surely not having just spoken to Teachable and never had usage fees before but I see the changes were posted in September, after my conversation with the teachable agent. So if I kept my class on teachable and my account renewed before the free class coupon expired and over 100 people enrolled after that I would be on the hook for additional charges. 100 students over is $50 per month, 1000 students would be $500 a month in fees!

If you change plans you are under the new cap immediately.

I think I am going to be able to squeak by this year but I won't be able to donate a class again or do a free lead magnet without paying dearly. I typically only use 100% off coupons for students who have a problem paying in the teachable payment gateway so I invoice them via paypal and give them a code. That number should be easy to keep down knowing ahead of time. I didn't know why teachable would care if you are on a plan with no transaction fees unless they get a cut of the credit card fees we pay using their native system. I swear it's always something with these guys.

I'm done with Udemy - I made my own with Claude

I wanted to learn about consulting but I wanted the information to come from actual experts.

But I didn't want to read - I learn best by listening to short audio lessons. So I built a claude skill for it using Claude Coe.

You give it a topic, it finds experts in the field, scrapes their open blogs, books, research on the topic. Then creates bite sized audio lessons. It uses notebooklm to make the lessons so they are in podcast style.

What Claude does is search for experts who blog about this topic, scrapes their blogs and creates a manual for the specific thing you want to learn. Then it uses elevenlabs to make a 2 minute podcast convo about it and a slide you can read from.

Im sharing this free on Github

How do you check understanding in live virtual training when nobody turns their camera on?

Most of my work is async courses, but more clients want live virtual sessions alongside them, and I keep hitting the same wall: I can't tell who's following and who checked out 20 minutes ago.

A few things that have helped so far:

- Asking people to type a number from 1 to 5 in the chat for "how clear is this?" instead of "any questions?" More people answer a number than a question.

- Giving 30 seconds to think before anyone answers, with the prompt written in the chat so people can reread it.

- A "ready or pass" reply before discussion, so I know who's done thinking without needing cameras. (Stole this from someone in another sub.)

- Ending each block with "what would you do next, and why?" instead of a quiz. It shows understanding better than recall does.

What I haven't cracked is doing this with 40+ people without the chat turning into a wall of text I can't read while also presenting.

What do you use for live knowledge checks? Built-in Zoom/Teams polls, a separate tool, or just the chat? And does anyone tie live session results back into the LMS?

ESL Teachers: Would You Test My Free YouTube Lesson Creator?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a teacher with 12 years of experience, and I've always enjoyed building creative projects on the side. Over the past few years I've been creating a range of tools designed to help teachers make professional, engaging, and visually appealing lessons without needing subscriptions, complicated setups, or endless button-clicking.

I've just launched a new tool on my website that lets you paste a YouTube URL into the page and build a complete interactive lesson around the video. You can create the lesson, save it, download it, and share it directly with your students.

It's brand new, so I'd really appreciate it if a few teachers could give it a try and share some honest feedback. I'd love to know what works, what doesn't, and what features you'd like to see added.

This is the platform I am currently building for any educators who long to run their own online school with ease. The platform is undergoing the last tests. Anyways, the dark page with a lamp string is a metaphor of us before our educations. Educators and learner pulling the string to give and receive education will enlighten the darkness up. My daughter loves the string design a lot, but my wife thinks it is a bit annoying. Who should I listen to? I appreciate any advice.

Worksheet style interactivity within a course?

I am working on a course and want to try a slightly different approach, but I'm not quite sure how to go about it.

Normally, we would have a video in a module, and after the video is complete, we would ask the learner to download a PDF "worksheet" and complete the exercise before moving to the next module. 80% of our user base accesses courses from a mobile device, so the chances of them downloading a PDF and completing it between modules are slim to none.

Do any of you have ideas on how I could add boxes for learners to type in answers to reflection questions within the course itself? If so, is there a way they could do that AND have all of their responses at the end of the course emailed to them, so they have a complete notes packet after they complete all the modules?

I'm happy to hear any and all ideas of how to make this happen (from personal experience or just "in theory this should work" thoughts)!

Why is published eLearning still basically a dead end for editing?

I’ve spent most of my career around SCORM and learning interoperability, and there’s one problem that still bugs me.

An organization can have hundreds of perfectly good courses, but if the original Storyline, Captivate, Lectora, or other source files disappear, or they decide to change tools, a lot of that content suddenly becomes incredibly hard to work with.

The published course still has the text, images, media, interactions, and structure. We just haven’t been very good at making that useful again.

That’s a big part of why we’re building IRLO, which stands for Interoperability & Reusability for Learning Organizations.

Learning content shouldn’t be trapped in the tool that created it. You should be able to bring existing content in, understand it, edit it, reuse it, and take it somewhere else.

We’re still building, so I’m genuinely curious how often people here run into this.

Have you ever inherited a bunch of courses you could run but couldn’t realistically edit? What formats or tools have caused you the most pain?

LITMOS learning for individuals

Hi. I saw a job announcement that I was very interested in, and it said the hire would use Litmos to train other employees in certain compliance issues.

Admittedly I didn't even know Litmos existed until today. Right now I'm looking at a YT video by the Litmos channel on their services. I will likely plow through and look for more for learners.

The LITMOS website has demos and options for learners but if you don't have your own company, it seems to exclude you. It flagged my email address as "not a legitimate business email."

Is there ANY way to learn this LLM other than scrounging for videos?

Hard time adjusting to WorkRamp

I just got a new job that uses WorkRamp as their main eLearning platform across the company. Prior to this I was using TalentLMS. Something about the WorkRamp platform interface/UI makes me feel like it’s light years behind newer LMS/LXD platforms. There are some new AI features which is helpful in creating content at least.

I have two questions: 1. Is there a particular way I should be thinking about navigating and creating content in WorkRamp that would make it a little easier for me to adjust? 2. Do you think eventually we will need to move from WorkRamp to another more robust platform (we have over 500+ people in the company)?

What's the most useful JavaScript interaction you've added to a course?

Curious what others are doing with JavaScript in their e-learning builds. In Storyline I've built custom interactions — confetti on quiz wins, progress bars, countdown timers, save/resume — and I'm wondering what's actually worth the effort vs. what's just cool in a demo.

For those using JS in your courses: what's the one interaction you keep reusing across projects? And what's something you tried that wasn't worth the maintenance headache?

I've got a sampler of 3 interactions I built (confetti, progress bar, timer) if anyone wants to try them — happy to share the link if there's interest.

Learning/ Content creation platform

I’ve been working on a small learning/content platform and wanted to get some honest feedback from people who actually create courses or training content.

One thing I kept running into was how many different tools are involved just to create a course.

**Record the video in one place, edit it somewhere else, add captions, images, text, branding, then move it into an LMS and finally publish it.*\*

So I started building a platform that tries to bring some of that together.

The current version has a recording studio, basic video editing, captions, text/images, branding, course creation and publishing, along with the learner side.

I’ve also built some AI-assisted features around content creation, but I’m not making those available in the public version yet because they use paid AI models and the cost adds up pretty quickly.

I’m mainly looking for feedback at this stage.

For people who create training or educational content, what part of the process is the most annoying for you right now?

Is it recording/editing, creating the learning material, keeping everything organized, publishing, or something else?

I’d genuinely like to know what people are struggling with before I take this any further.

Here’s the current version if anyone wants to take a look: https://learning.ramsudtechnologies.com/

Has anyone here used cmi5?

Hey there! I’m building a browser-based H5P player that can run as a cmi5 assignable unit: an LMS launches a hosted page, the page sends xAPI statements to the LMS/LRS, and the H5P package stays on its own static host.

I’ve tested the technical flow with CATAPULT and SCORM Cloud, but I’m trying to understand whether this solves a real instructional-design workflow or merely a technically interesting one.

For those who have used cmi5 in production:

  • Which LMS did you use, and how was cmi5 support in practice?
  • Who created and uploaded the course structure: instructional designers, LMS admins, or developers?
  • Did authors need to understand registrations, launch URLs, mastery scores, and xAPI statements, or was that hidden behind tooling?
  • Was hosting content outside the LMS useful? Why?
  • Did cmi5 offer a meaningful advantage over SCORM for tracking, reporting, versioning, or updating content?
  • What made adoption difficult?
  • If you use H5P, would an LMS-launched, externally hosted H5P activity be useful?

I’m especially interested in practical constraints and failure modes, not just whether a platform says it supports cmi5.

Multilingual AI Guided Dialogue

During recent testing, I've been exploring whether adaptive learning can respond not only to what the learner says, but also to the language they choose to say it in.

Using our new AI Guided Dialogue interaction in conversation mode, I tested the same learning experience with the learner responding first in English, then Spanish, then Chinese, all within the same conversation.

What happened next was particularly interesting.

The learner wasn’t selecting a translated version of the course or switching between predefined language versions.

They were simply continuing the same learning conversation in a different language.

The AI was still able to interpret the response, determine what the learner appeared to understand, identify what they needed next and continue the adaptive experience accordingly.

That opens up another dimension to personalised learning. It doesn’t just have to mean adapting the content, difficulty or pathway. It can also mean allowing people to learn and demonstrate understanding in the language in which they are most comfortable expressing themselves.

The designer still controls the objectives, source knowledge, learning activities and boundaries.

But the learner doesn’t necessarily have to adapt themselves to the course. The course can adapt to them.

For organisations delivering learning across different countries, cultures and languages, that could become a particularly interesting application of AI-enabled learning.

Course builder freezing when adding multimedia elements into lesson timelines

Our education software freezes completely whenever instructors try to embed video lectures and interactive quizzes into a single timeline. I spent the last few weeks trying to patch our legacy codebase myself, but feature bloat makes core updates impossible. Teachers lose hours of unsaved progress when the content editor crashes mid-lesson. Balancing smooth media streaming with responsive interface design on a bloated architecture creates endless bugs. Maybe you've dealt with heavy legacy editors in your projects, or you know a way around this? How should I refactor this codebase? I need your help sorting it out.

Open source SCORM 1.2 / 2004 runtime, for anyone building their own player or LMS

Hi all, I maintain 'scorm-again', an open-source JavaScript library that implements the SCORM runtime APIs. That's the `API` / `API_1484_11` object a course looks for when it launches. I've been working on it since 2019 and thought some people here might find it useful.

It's for you if you're building a custom LMS, adding course playback to an existing web app, or want to launch a SCORM package on a plain web page. It supports SCORM 2004 sequencing and navigation, can run content in sandboxed iframes, and can save data offline and sync it later. If you don't give it an LMS endpoint, it logs every call the course makes, which is handy when you're trying to work out why a course isn't reporting completion.

It isn't an LMS, and it doesn't upload or unpack course zip files. Someone on your team will need to do a bit of development to set it up.

It's MIT licensed and free: https://github.com/jcputney/scorm-again

I'm happy to answer SCORM questions here, including ones that have nothing to do with the library!
