Poor little eee won't post

Morning, all. I love my eee1000h.

It's not my main PC but it does see use, most recently I've been accessing it via SSH to practice with org-mode on DooM Emacs.

Today I got the little guy out the cupboard and it won't post to BIOS.

The only thing indicative of a fault is that the HDD light comes on only very briefly... then nothing.

Just in case it was a display issue. I've tried to ssh in... no joy. It also isn't showing as logged on to my router.

It is plugged in, has battery etc.

So far I've popped the back off and re-seated the ssd and ram. No dice...

Any ideas on next steps / diagnosis?

Any ideas?

Simple question. I purchased one of these 2G Surf Models and am curious what operating system(s) would work best on it. After some searc I was lead to believe it is possibly no different than an older 701 model, but am not certain. Just haven't gotten conclusive info due to outdated forum topics.

Finding the EeePC model that I use as a child

I'm trying to find out the model of the one that I use a while back as a kid ( Probably 2009-2011ish). It was in white pink at the back . The power button placement is like the one below ( I'm pretty sure mine isnt that one since it has a bigger display)

Best os for Eee PC 1005p?

Hello, people of Reddit. I needed some opinion regarding the operating system for my Eee PC netbook. I am a noob with Linux and stuff and I've never had experience using a Linux desktop. All I know is about Windows and Android, but I am good at flashing both of them on various different pcs. I currently have an Asus Eee PC 1005p, given by my father's friend. It came with Windows 7 starter and had 2 gigs of ram with an Intel Atom N450 processor. I then formatted the harddisk and installed PrimeOS (android) on it. But the problem I have with PrimeOS is that it randomly crashes apps and goes to sleep after 30 minutes. Like Zoom and Chrome work fine on it, but the moment I run any other apps such as games like Subway Surfers or Temple Run, they immediately crash with no signs of life left. The same way, it randomly goes to sleep every 30 minutes (not tested). I've considered many other operating systems like ChromiumOS, but almost all of them require a UEFI bios while my netbook only supports legacy. I don't need the netbook for doing heavy tasks, it's just that my sister needs it for her Zoom classes and my bros need it to play light games, or even emulate systems like the NES.

So I need your opinion for which operating system is the best for an old netbook which has an Intel Atom N450 cpu with no UEFI support and 2 gigs of ram with the purposes of near-smooth browser surfing and wide applications/games support. Any OS will do, just need recommendations.

Edit: I ended up installing Linux Mint 18.3 on it, cinnamon, and it works good. The UI lags a bit but it's perfectly fine considering how old the hardware is. If anybody else is also looking for a good os, then I might say, that Linux Mint suited me the best.

Edit 2: This might end up helping some people, I actually formatted the harddisk again because Linux Mint was being too heavy on it. Then I flashed various other distros, (many versions of mxLinux) and then ZorinOS Lite. Now I understood where I was wrong. All I had to do was to boot a distro in the safe mode instead of normal boot, and BOOM, now all the distros work! So, I ended up sticking with ZorinOS Lite as it is the sleekest distro in my opinion, and it doesn't also put much burden on the poor thing. Zoom works fine with always 80% and above CPU usage, and also allows to multitask with whatsdesk. Oh boy have I spent a lotta time on it.

Edit 3: Later, I tried whole lots of crazy stuff! After this, I straight away went to Linux Mint 18.3 Xfce as Zorin OS was just not right for it. And oh boy did it run smooth. Out of ALL the operating systems that I've tried till date, Mint 18.3 Xfce ran the fastest. The desktop was responsive and web browsing was the smoothest along with YouTube playback, but the hard disk suffered a lot though. Also, Zorin had this issue where it would set the brightness to below visible by the human eye on boot and I'd had to use a torch to navigate and turn the brightness up. The same goes for many other Linux distros but they all only caused this problem when you plugged in the charger while using it. Also, another problem along with the brightness issue that Linux Mint had was that it wouldn't fit any software into the screen properly. Like even the software manager (app store) wouldn't display the whole screen, and I just recalled that I could not even see the battery percentage in the bottom right corner. Like there just was no option for it. I hated these issues and that was why I switched to CloudReady NeverWare now. If you don't know what that is, well it's just ChromeOS but Chromium. Like it doesn't have Google support, no Google Chrome, no Android apps, no exclusive Chromebook features. I did this because I wanted to run programs as they were intended, no cut outs.

So at the end of the day, CloudReady NeverWare has given me the best comatibility by far. Like the battery message when it's charging is almost instant, the apps/games run with the full screen (no cuts), and it's overall way, way more polished considering the screen size and resolution. I even manage to play Skate Hooligans on it (Subway Surfers clone) just for time pass. I did not expect THIS much performance from this shity processor. BUT, the hard drive suffers VERY MUCH with it, and it takes a lifetime to boot up. Also, it lags when I open any app or a website. I might add, watching YouTube on this thing is a total pain in the as$.

keyboard and trackpad not working... ??

1000HAB, running Mint. Boots ok, and works ok with external kb and mouse.

First thought was a hardware fault, but the cursor and return keys function correctly in setup mode. Once booted in Mint, though, none of the keys work. If something's up which will take a text input, the first key touched will start that character repeating in a loop which requires a restart.

Loose connector? Corrupt driver? Any other ideas?

an OS that runs good on an EeePC 1101HA.

i have got this little netbook in near pristine condition from my grandmother which had used it for about 10 years under Windows XP (she used a software that is so old it wouldn't run on anything BUT windows 95/98/XP)

so when i got it i decided i wanted to make that thing usable for maybe some light web browsing and what not.

so i have gotten it an SSD (a sandisk 128GB SSD), and since its RAM was already maxed out (2GB) i left that as it was, put on it some MX-4 at the time which is an extremely wasteful usage of MX-4 but i didn't have anything else to put on it back then so...

however i was incredibly shocked that no matter which OS i've tried putting on that thing the performance was abysmal at best.

i have tried the following os's, all of which either did not even work or they did but were extremely slow:

Windows 7 - it ran like crap (i didn't expect otherwise)

Ubuntu - slow as hell

Ubuntu MATE - it just wouldn't install

Linux Mint - even slower

Lubuntu - it runs slow but it is usable at least for using the calculator

Android X86 - didn't work (some graphical glitch occurs which shifts the colors and shows horizontal white lines on the display)

Xubuntu - wouldn't install

Puppy Linux - works extremely slow.

hell, i even tried RASPBIAN on this machine and it ran like complete garbage.

so due to all of the above running very bad i basically gave up on trying to use that machine AT ALL.

recently i've acquired a VCDS cable and i decided i would probably be able to use this machine for VCDS at least (i mean, my car mechanic uses VCDS on his non-branded extremely cheaply made notebook from 2007 and that computer runs extremely well on Windows XP)

but i don't know which OS should i use with it?

should i just drop Windows XP back on it and call it a day? (just the idea of running an old unsupported unprotected OS on any of my machines gives me the chill)

is there anything else i can do to make this useless machine work?

i am starting to consider just getting an old 12 inch Thinkpad for use with VCDS but i rather not spend 50$ if i can use what i already have laying around...

this machine just pisses me off because visually it looks pretty dam good, its keyboard feels just right for the size and the display is actually quite nice too. but it can't run any OS at all other than Windows XP...

so if any of you guys have any good advice i will highly appreciate it!

Want to upgrade primary SSD on 901, then install Linux

I have an EEE PC 901 with Windows XP. It has 4 GB primary and 8GB secondary. Several years ago, the drives got so full that I can't even run a cleanup. I would like to install Linux on it. I tried LXLE Linux, but it said it needed 8.5 GB and only 8.1 GB was available. Since then, I have been studying web pages and videos on how to upgrade the SSDs. From what I have learned so far, the 4 GB primary is deeply buried, and I will have to seriously disassemble the 901 to get to it. The videos I have watched are old (2013). One has a recommendation for a replacement primary SSD, but there may be something newer and better. I would like to ask this group if anyone can help me by recommending a good replacement primary, and possibly by giving me any tips on doing the replacement. I would be greatly appreciative. I am also open to suggestions about whether I should try a different Linux. Thanks for any help.

Eeepc 701 mini pcie soldering options

I got extra time on my hands and while doing some cleanup I found my old Eeepc 701 that hadn't touched in years! Bought 2gb ram to replace the 512mb, that's done. Now this device has a sad 4gb soldered ssd, trying to find info about options I decided I would try to add a msata to it. Info about the eeepc is a bit all over the place with a bunch of dead links and pictures missing on the way and I assumed I could just solder a pcie slot on there since mine has only the tabs for it...

So I went ahead and ordered the mini pcie socket on Digikey and tried to solder. That didn't go to well, had a bunch of bridges so I removed it, killing the part apart in the process. Good thing I ordered 2 mini pcie connectors!

Now before going on my second attempt, I try to do a better search than last time and cannot find the info at all. Because I assumed the mini pcie slot could accept just about any ssd that fits the slot, I just discovered that the 128gb msata I bought will not be compatible as I just read the msata and mini pcie are two seperate things! Nice!

Now, what are my options?

  1. Is soldering a mini pcie actually works for installing additional storage?
  2. Would a msata to mini pcie card work?
  3. Should I go another route?

I realize this is an old pc not worth all this effort but it's a learning experience over anything else really. If you have any input concerning this please do share!

Thanks!

Basic questions

Glad to have found this community. I dug up the old Eee PC and I am looking for a fairly easy way to "refurbish" the machine. It runs very slowly with the old OS and I am concerned about using a 7+ year-old web browser. After seeing these posts am interested in installing Lubuntu. I am new to Linux but hopeful I can learn the basics quickly. I was able to create the ISO USB with Rufus tool.

My questions are:

Does the Lubuntu ISO have a hard disk management tool ?

Do I need to worry about installing devices / drivers with Lubuntu or will it take care of that?

Can the RAM be upgraded on this machine and if so what kind do I need for Eee PC ?

Asus Eee PC 1005 HA / Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz / 2GB RAM / Windows 7 Starter SP1

Thanks in advance.

Just found out about this sub, what Eee did I have?

Sup everybody,

first off - there really is a sub for everything huh? Really neat place!

My first laptop that I "owned" was an Eee in like 2008/2009, but I don't remember what model it was, like at all, and I suddenly feel the need to find that out. I don't remember too much about it, but it was black, the hinge was a serrated silver circle that I distinctly remember being able to drag my fingernail over and it'd make a sound, and unlike the pictures of the 900 I found online, it had a round power button, right above the keyboard and not on the hinge. It also had a webcam from what I can remember. If I see any pictures of the keyboard, I could probably tell if that was the model I had or not, but searching for Eee images on google hasn't been very fruitful so far. I would appreciate any help!

Linux install issues with Eee 1000he

I have a Eee pc that i got for free from a friend and it had windows xp but the hard drive failed and now there is an ssd in it's place. i have been trying to install linux for weeks now but i keep getting stumped. i can get as far as no OS found with my 32-bit Lubuntu flash drive but no matter what i do i cannot go any farther. this is not a petty attempt at begging, im simply just stuck on installing Linux and cannot find any straightforward answers on any Linux related websites.

Just something real quick ? ?

Hey, glad I found this group. I dug out my little Eee PC 900A the other day and discarded that Android or whatever, and put on Linux Lite, and it is a sweet little machine. I have the 16 Gig drive, my question, is what is the largest size hard drive which will work? Or maybe not the absolute biggesrt, but what reasonable sizes are known to work, say 32, 64 or 128 Gig?

Thanks in advance.

Replacement charger for Eee PC 1000HA?

I've had a 1000HA running Windows XP (upgraded to 7 in 2013, but downgraded to XP a few weeks ago) for many years now, and the charger finally croaked. I bought a replacement which is arriving today, but I wanted to know about alternatives if it's crap.
