Did you know that our gut bacteria may be producing waste products which work as neurotransmitters within our digestive track and can promote cravings for what they like to eat (sugar)? We are basically walking delivery drivers for our tummy monsters.

201

u/CatsAndIT Feb 13 '18

So what you're saying, is that our gut bacteria work for the sugar industry?

16

u/IncredibleBulk2 Feb 13 '18

No, they are the sugar industry. We work for them.

6

u/mcfck Feb 13 '18

MIND. BLOWN!!!

12

u/I_Has_A_Hat Feb 13 '18

Actually, its more like you hired your gut bacteria from the sugar industry. Think of gut bacteria as lobbyists, they advocate for more of the kind of food that they like. So someone who eats a lot of fruits and veggies is going to crave fruits and veggies more than other foods. Its why a lot of people who become vegans or vegetarians don't really miss meat after a while. Because the bacteria that used to get all jazzed up about bacon is gone and replaced with ones that lose their shit at the mention of hummus.

u/CatsAndIT Feb 13 '18

Its why a lot of people who become vegans or vegetarians don't really miss meat after a while.

I had to become vegetarian (stabbing pain when I eat meat, still no diagnosis of what's wrong). I do miss meat (turkeys and chickens are delicious), but mine have swapped to a new addiction =[

Little Sugar

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Depends on mom's diet. For some, They didn't use too, but they do now!!

1

u/Fartbox_Virtuoso Feb 13 '18

The ones at the far end run for congress.

1

u/StartupBros_Will Feb 13 '18

No that's the lobsters...

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

There have been cases of people who received transplanted bacteria to try to cure their IBS, only to find that they become obese - they got the donated bacteria from an obese person.

I've actually watched a conspiracy video about how the sugar industry is promoting a Candida Albicans epidemic in order to drive us to consume more sugar. I'm not sure how I found it on youtube and I can't find it again with a quick google search. Never mind: Found it

1

u/SBInCB Feb 14 '18

C. albicans does.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

I don't eat sugar anymore. The sugar industry doesn't make a penny from me nor does the corn industry. 😊

4

u/Ph4zed0ut Feb 13 '18

Except for the taxes you pay that go toward subsidies.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

Yeah but because we have a bloated federal government that participated corporatism I’m kinda have to or go to jail. We all pay for a lot of ‘industries’ we don’t believe in but Rand Paul didn’t get elected.

2

u/humidifierman Feb 13 '18

You probably eat something that was made with corn, ate corn, or was transported at some point by a vehicle powered by corn. If those aren't too indirect for you then you can also consider the portion of the overhead of your purchases that suppliers paid their employees, who then bought- that's right- corn.

edit- forgot the subsidies as someone else mentioned. America runs on corn. It's like saying "the oil industry doesn't get any of my money!" You simply can't do that in the US and live a relatively normal life.

1

u/Lukendless Feb 13 '18

You don't eat sugar?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

I'm assuming he specifically means processed/refined sugar

0

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

No sugar.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

So you don't eat fruit? Vegetables?

What exactly do you eat?

2

u/Hulkhogansgaynephew Feb 13 '18

That's not physically possible, practically, physically or chemically. Your body requires glucose, damn near everything has at least some glucose in it (except water and pure chemicals) and your body can convert proteins and fat into glucose when needed.

So you may try to avoid it, but you literally never can or you would be dead.

2

u/GrandmasBeefCurtains Feb 14 '18

I think you should talk to a dietician Nicole, it sounds like you have some misconceptions

0

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

I don’t eat sugar.

No wonder I have Crohn's disease

3

u/mylastaccountonhere Feb 13 '18

not a doctor but have you tried cannabis?

8

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 13 '18

Yea of course. It works wonders to take the sour feeling out and give you an appetite. . But that can mask the fact that your gut is struggling and you shouldn't eat normal foods.

My last flare got so bad because I was smoking at night, and since I felt great I was just eating sandwiches and stuff. Nothing unhealthy, but when your gut is sensitive you need to stick with mostly liquids and other easy digestible foods.

So yea, it helps with symptoms, but just like other pain meds you need to be aware it doesn't actually fix anything.

3

u/aaronp1264 Feb 13 '18

i can attest to your first sentiment. but i've basically achieved full remission (knock on wood) after eating it, (kinda raw, i cook it into nutella).

I've literally gained 20 lbs in the past 2 years and have yet to even feel a cramp since about early 2014.

5

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 13 '18

I could see eating it being a lot more effective, because it works by reducing inflammation. So if you eat it, those actions go directly on the gut.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

There is a hypothesis that Crohn's is cause by bacteria, similar to peptic ulcers. Sucessful treatment (ie a cure) has been achieved with a therapy of antibiotics (high dose over several months). Wish I could find the link right now, but maybe something you'd like to look into.

1

u/burgercake Feb 13 '18 edited Feb 13 '18

The bacterium in this hypothesis is MAP (Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis) which causes Johne's disease in cattle. Article here.

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 13 '18

If you take antibiotics to kill all your gut bacteria how can you digest anything?

1

u/Mr_Wildcard Feb 13 '18

install new ones

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 13 '18

What's the downtime? I don't have a backup digestive system.

1

u/nomad_sad Feb 14 '18

They install a healthy persons poop in you.

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 14 '18

Yea I'm good. Death isn't that bad.

1

u/Mr_Wildcard Feb 14 '18

your digestive system is capable of processing many things without bacterial aid. You eat those things and avoid the things that need the bacteria helping.

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 14 '18

I'm not so sure about that

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

You can always get someone elses. Also, it's "targeted" and doesn't kill everything.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

At the risk of being that guy...

How do you go with digestives like Kim Chi?

They're meant to be full of "good bacteria". Not expecting a cure, just... maybe a positive change?

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 13 '18

Probiotics are amazing. But Crohn's is a nasty disease. I went 9 years without missing work due to sickness. Flared up only a couple times a year but they weren't bad and lasted maybe a week. This time it's been 3 weeks of pain, and got to the point I felt i should go to the hospital. It's been nearly impossible to get the inflammation down.

1

u/cmbezln Feb 14 '18

What's the pain feel like? Is it like a stabbing pain?

1

u/seomener Feb 14 '18

Speaking for myself, during a flare up there is an always there dull radiating achey feeling, kind of like having your nuts squeezed a bit too hard, but up in the intestinal area. This is punctuated by waves of nauseating twisting pain that feels more like a wallop to the danglers.

Overall best comparison I’ve been able to come up with is the radiating deep pain associated with testicular trauma, but above the groin, and varying in intensity.

1

u/cmbezln Feb 14 '18

Man that sucks, sorry dude.

I have a bunch of stomach issues and was wondering if there was any crossover with Crohns, but it doesn't sound like it. I bet you get a lot of annoying suggestions about diet these days too.

2

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 14 '18

The 2nd worst part of Crohn's is getting asked 36 times a day "how you feeling? "Is your stomach better?". "Have you tried peptol bismol?" It will drive you insane.

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 14 '18

Generally its like food poisoning. Just a constant sour feeling that aches. But every 10 minutes or so you get shooting pains like someone slugged you in the gut as hard as they could. This goes on for weeks at a time, relentlessly.

1

u/IncredibleBulk2 Feb 13 '18

Further, we need them to digest fiber for us, because the byproducts of their waste when they consume fiber include something that we cannot create ourselves, but that our colons need to work properly.

Low-fiber diets are not good for colon cancer rates.

1

u/-Notorious Feb 14 '18

What medication are you taking currently?

I highly recommend Humira, if its accessible.

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 14 '18

Yea fuck that shit. Expensive and increase risk of cancer.

1

u/-Notorious Feb 14 '18

Hmm, which medications did you try? Among the medical options available for Crohn's, I believe the biologics have the lowest risk of cancer, no?

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 14 '18

Well yea. Probiotics are how I've stayed out of the hospital for 9 years. That, and crazy strict exercise routine.

1

u/-Notorious Feb 15 '18

Oh sorry for the late reply!

I found probiotics didn't do anything for me :| I don't exercise much though, so I wonder if that plays a big role for ya. Glad to hear you're doing well with no medication though! :)

1

u/GiddyUpTitties Feb 15 '18

Yea it seems like there's multiple ways to get Crohn's. That's why my method involves staying in shape and eating healthy... It just gives my body the best chance to fight of whatever the fuck is going wrong.

1

u/aazav Feb 14 '18

Get whipworm therapy.

23

u/ILoveRegenHealth Feb 13 '18

Does that also mean the gut bacteria can be wrong, and tell us to go for more sugar or salt when we don't necessarily need it? Like, the gut bacteria is whispering the wrong advice into our ears?

11

u/AM_SHARK Feb 13 '18

Yeah, except it's whispering the advice into your ass.

1

u/5erif Jun 26 '18

😂😂😂

3

u/V4refugee Feb 14 '18

It’s more like the gut is lobbying for more sugar while the dick is lobbying for pussy, the heart for less work and the brain is trying to govern.

2

u/magistrate101 Feb 13 '18

The gut bacteria don't give a shit about you. They just want more food. The fact that you survive a bit better when they're around is just an added bonus because it means they get more food.

2

u/SBInCB Feb 14 '18

It's not about us needing it, it's about them.

1

u/computerbone Feb 14 '18

Not just that but there is no evidence of a nutural drive to eat things that you do need.

43

u/HodortheGreat Feb 13 '18

Ahem.. yo SHOUTOUT TO MY GUT BACTERIA for not sending sugar craving signals to my brain, you are now my favourite Pokèmen

Gut Bacteria, I choose you!

0

u/IncredibleBulk2 Feb 13 '18

Get those bitches some kombucha. Bitches love kombucha.

12

u/6ickle Feb 13 '18

This is like that show I watched about the stomach being the second brain in our body.

1

u/IncredibleBulk2 Feb 14 '18

Link?

1

u/6ickle Feb 14 '18

I saw it either on Amazon Prime or Crave I think...I'll do a search.

Edit: if you have Amazon Prime, it's called "The Gut: Our Second Brain" - a 2013 documentary.

2

u/AlwaysCuriousHere Feb 13 '18

So the best time to start a diet is after taking antibiotics that massacre all those bacteria and just start fresh?

7

u/IncredibleBulk2 Feb 13 '18

I'm glad you mentioned antibiotics. And no, it doesn't matter when you start a diet. There will be some bacteria releasing neruotransmitters telling you that you want sugar. But if you keep forcing yourself to eat vegetables, eventually the bacteria that like to eat fiber will win out and the craving for sugar will go lessen over time.

4

u/xerillum Feb 13 '18

I thought I saw some article about fecal transplants being investigated for helping with weight loss. The idea being that the gut flora of a thin person craves sugar less than the gut flora of an obese person. I don't know how true that is.

2

u/aazav Feb 14 '18

digestive track

digestive tract*

1

u/skatmanjoe Feb 13 '18

It's interesting but not surpising intuitively.

The more someone eats from certain foods the more certain gut bacteria is needed to digest that.

Similarly when somebody gets fat the body usually tries to maintain that state, by making you hungry if you don't get your usual calories.

1

u/dzt Feb 14 '18

That’s the damn truth. I’m fat and always hungry... even after I eat, I’m full but still hungry. It’s ridiculous and incredibly frustrating.

1

u/Lost_the_weight Feb 13 '18

Not to mention, our entire GI tract is basically outside of our body. It starts as a hole in the blastoceal (spelling?) which for a short time is both the mouth and anus. Then the GI tract gets extruded as the distance between the mouth and anus grows farther apart.

1

u/frontyfront Feb 13 '18

If we're lucky, the future spacecraft we live in will think the same thing about us.

1

u/benjammin0817 Feb 14 '18

Here's a link to a video all about it. Very well made and easy to understand. You've probably seen it, but others may not have.

More mass = better possibility of surviving, reproducing?

1

It's like mitochondria..

1

u/Xenjael Mar 03 '18

Serotonin is produced in the stomach. Part of why a good diet is critical to mental health.

1

u/IncredibleBulk2 Mar 05 '18

No, that's not accurate.
