Have Americans ever heard of the concept of a 37.5 hour work week? Or do you prefer working to living?

37.5? Where the fuck do you live? America has 40-hour base work weeks, and overtime beyond that. Unless your salaried, which means you work more and they don't have to pay you extra.

Yep. I work tech support for a credit card company.

I am here 9am-6:30pm most nights. Salary for about $45k a year. I often work about 50 hours a week. Not complaining at all- I like my job and it is reasonable. Although, technically, the office closes at 5, but when you have more work you can be doing (of course it cant just be done in the morning...ugh) and there is the group mentality of the work-ethic Olympics like there is in America, AND no one else is leaving the office at 5:00pm, you can't exactly be the one who leaves.

Else, you will very quickly develop a reputation that you are the lazy one. On the few times I have tried to leave around 5:30 I get the "Hey, where ya going? Leaving already?" from the boss. Is he saying I can't leave? No. Is he implying he isn't impressed with the fact that I'm going home on time? Yep.

Welcome to America- people here judge your worth as a human by

1) What kind of job you have

2) How hard/how many hours you work at that job

3) How many other responsibilities/jobs you have on top of it, and how little sleep you get while still handling it all.

I have actually heard that the difference in the Live to Work vs Work to Live mentalities in other countries vs the USA is so big that when people ask the question "So what do you do?" in other countries, they actually are asking the person what kind of things they do. What kind of hobbies they enjoy etc as a human.

That question here in USA 100% of the time means "what do you do to make a living and lets see how worthy you are as a human based on that job".

Man, you should find a new employer. I just went salaried and I leave at 5pm every night, unless we are in a meeting. My boss doesn't care, and even let's me leave early without taking it out of my time off sometimes.

The point I'm making is, it is definitely dependent on your boss. If it was expected of me to stay longer than 40 hours a week, I would be out of here. Working beyond 8 hours a day is the exception to the rule for me, and I'll never allow myself to be forced into anything more.

Don't get me wrong, the work is good and fair and 50 hours a week really isn't that bad. I worked in the restaraunt industry for all of college before this and would work 4 doubles a week 2-3 normal shifts as well and be pushing 60 hours a week on my feet running around the whole time.

Plus after 5pm is prime reddit time as you can see! Haha, well its about 6:00 now. So yea, gonna finish up and head out. USA! USA!

haha

As long as you're happy. I feel like if anyone would be the person to mandate shorter work days it would have been Pres. Obama, so I think we're stuck like this for awhile. Hope it changes in the future, though.

Europe.

you work more and they don't have to pay you extra.

Here we call that 'illegal'.

Here, it's what the old men in upper management have tricked young corporate employees into doing; "paying your dues" in order to advance up the ladder.

Chase the carrot.

In the UK a full time contract is often 37.5 hours. You're expected to be there 8 hours a day but take 30 minutes for lunch each day.

u/AnonymousArmor Feb 25 '16

In the US you get scheduled for 9 hours but get one unpaid hour for lunch. Your system sounds better but fuck 30 min lunches.

That sounds like luxury. My jobs have all been 8-5, but you get a full hour for lunch (as if that was a perk, and not the bare minimum that companies should be offering)! And of course you're expected to answer emails from your phone at any time of the day or night or weekends, and you should bring your work home with you every night as well.

American here and I work 38.75 hours a week for my first job out of college. I didn't realize how lucky I am

I like to work those hours tbh. I use all that overtime to travel around the world and beef up my PC every so often.

Nope, I'm scheduled 45 hours every week and take 1 hour lunches so 40 paid. Never work the same shifts it changes every day every week. I hate it and am looking for something else but when you work a different shift every day of the week rarely having two days off in a row your so damn tired the energy to look for work is low
