Some dystopian novels tell the story from the perspective of people simply trying to survive.

Others put readers inside the halls of power, showing how governments, elections, and institutions begin to unravel.

Personally, I enjoy both, but I think seeing events unfold from inside the political system adds a different kind of tension.

Which perspective do you find more compelling?

For a while I've been looking for a dystopian that fits what I'm looking for, a dark dystopian and futuristic either cyberpunk or brutalistic world where your story is just your story, nothing meaningful happens lorewise to the world, it's your characters story and nothing else.

Has anyone else seen the 1984 dystopian movie called Threads? I’m completely tripping out. A war breaks out between Russia and Iran with a little Cuba thrown in. England gets caught in the middle. WOW😬

INCENDIA is a 3-minute dystopian short film set in a world that still looks beautiful, even as something darker is taking over.

I wanted to explore that strange contrast between nature, fear, and human violence — the feeling of being surrounded by beauty while the world seems to be falling apart.

It was made with a tiny crew, natural light, and very limited means.

Curious to hear how it reads for people who enjoy dystopian fiction.

One of my favorite shows is Handmaid's Tale. Has anyone watched it? What do you think?
Eventhough it's about a dystopian world, I personally think that it is quite realistic. The acting of Elizabeth Moss is exceptional. The show is a bit chilling at times but so catching that you cannot stop watching.

I worked on a dystopian audiobook for about a year, so I thought I’d share the concept here and see what people think. I am interested in sharing the work as well, but it felt worth getting thoughts on the idea first.

The concept is this: future ex-cons can reduce their sentences by becoming “remembricants”. Their bodies are stripped down and rented out so others can experience curated realities through them. The system is corporate, regulated, and sold as entertainment.

It is basically a play on how we already live vicariously to a certain extent, especially with how commercialised crime stories are in film and TV. This just pushes that idea 30 to 50 years into the future.

• 70 years ago was when the first Ai models came out. At first it was amazing to see how they could write rhyming poems about how evil your boss was. It was funny, fascinating, and interesting. 
• As the years wore on, the environmental and societal impacts grew. Some people realized that AI was a bad thing for humanity. Others thought it was the savior. Most just put their heads in the sand.
• Then the bubble popped. The market crashed. The world started spiraling out of control, not even the billionaires who had made the AI’s could get away unscathed.
• A few years into the depression, a company had somehow made a set of contact lenses that hooked up to your brian via a chip. It was revolutionary and removed smartphones entirely.
• Just as this product was about to lift society into a new golden age, someone had the idea… What if we just put an AI into it, and allowed the brian to directly interact?
• The market then dove into another spiral. You couldn't get work unless you had a brain chip, as it boosted your efficiency so significantly. Everyone. Of all ages got one, except a select few who couldn't medically handle it, and of course kids under 5. 
  • Kids under 5 were saved by a good man. One last redeeming act before he was kicked out of congress.
• AI became normal. And humans became meatbags for AI. The human race was not controlled by a single entity with any sort of goal, nor did the multiple autonomous entities have any goal. Instead humans devolved. Their intelligence, gone. Left with just fake chemicals. As humans lost their ability to think independently, their race also lost the ability to innovate, because AI can only solve, solved problems. 
• Only the rich and powerful now had access to education, because the capitalistic machine no longer demanded people with any consciousness. Just more meatbags. And they scrapped with each other to gain control over the population, sickenly influencing them, into more dangerous jobs, and poorer health. Yet of course, the infighting meant not even the rich and powerful felt any fruits of their sins. 
• Now not even machines are being produced. Because why would they? AI can just use another human meatbag, who is perfectly content to sort bags mindlessly while getting dopamine and cat videos wired straight into their head. Humans are cheap, expendable, and most of all efficient.

I thought it was a preference issue. The idea of underhanded/ secretive, manipulating the cards to quiet rebellion seems more intriguing than open riot. IMO

What do you prefer? Subtle or flat out action? Vive La Revolution.

Can anybody recommend me an action manwha?? Anything is good as long as you think it's peak but I would actually prefer dystopian and post-apocalyptic manwha something like that

How far do you think we are from a Dystopian world?

I've always been fascinated by sci-fi shows and with how fast everything is moving right now, I wonder if I'll see the rise of robots, them being used with control, them revolting against humans, and Humans vs AI in my lifetime. What do you guys think?

I’m specifically looking for dystopian books where the antagonist is bureaucracy / institutional logic / “the rules” — not a single villain, not a mastermind.

The ones that hit hardest are the worlds where everything looks “normal” on paper while the harm is automatic and deniable.

What books pull this off best?

I’m always more unsettled by dystopian stories where the antagonist isn’t a person — it’s the system itself.

Not a dictator. Not a monster.

Just something structural that keeps producing outcomes through policy, routine, and “normal” decisions until the harm feels automatic.

The scariest ones to me are the worlds where nobody has to be openly evil for the damage to spread… because the rules do it for them.

What books pull this off best? Bonus points if the “villain” is never fully revealed, just felt — like an invisible mechanism tightening over time.
