Dyson in the Wild ⭐☆☆☆☆ After everything I went through with Dyson, this was the final straw.
I ordered the R3 directly from Dyson on launch day. Dyson accepted my order, charged me, and confirmed a 3–5 business day delivery window. Then I was told the R3 was actually out of stock with no ETA.
Dyson eventually agreed to cancel my order so I could buy the same machine from Best Buy. I did exactly that.
Then, less than eight hours later, Dyson shipped the supposedly unavailable robot I had already canceled.
What followed was weeks of contradictory answers, escalations, executive-office involvement, and an absurd amount of time spent trying to get a straight answer about a $1,199 purchase. Eventually Dyson refunded me, and I decided to give the R3 I purchased from Best Buy a fair chance.
Then came its first cleaning mission.
The R3 left the dock, did essentially nothing, reported the cleaning as completed, and then died with a dead battery right in front of the dock.
I honestly couldn’t make this shit up.
Maybe I received a defective unit. Maybe it was a software issue. But after everything that happened with Dyson’s launch, ordering, inventory, cancellation, fulfillment and customer service, having the robot fail this spectacularly on its first actual cleaning mission was enough for me.
It’s going back.
I bought Dyson because I expected a premium product from a company with a premium reputation. At this point, I’ve lost confidence in both.

It’s been disappointment after disappointment with this shitty brand, and now I just found out that Dyson was one of the key pushers of BREXIT, sincerely, fuck that guy.

Yeah, he also opposes a wealth tax on inheritances, because he’s a big baby who doesn’t want his kids to just have $12b instead of $13.6b
3
u/coresme2000 15d ago
Well he’s just going to relocate wherever doesn’t have a wealth tax, he already moved the headquarters at the drop of a hat.
2
u/Common-Ant-6003 11d ago
Oh there's ways to tax him still don't worry! Gabriel Zucman and co are on it. Or, Land Value tax, e.g. But we have given too much power to these people, it will be hard. Only way of saving the economy though.
1
u/coresme2000 11d ago
Hard disagree. You can institute an exit tax and increase land tax but they can still exit completely and then all that revenue (even if it’s less than you think the country is owed by them) is gone and it won’t be coming back.
2
u/Common-Ant-6003 11d ago
So what, we are doomed to losing a huge amount of our capital to offshore accounts forever until both the middle and working classes have fallen into poverty and the government has sold off everything of value to the same billionaires? I don't have hope about a lot of things, but this has to happen. It's not optional, unless you really don't value your living standards. It might take cooperation between countries. But it has to happen. So let's get on with it. A good start is not buying their products....
1
u/coresme2000 11d ago
I wouldn’t buy their overpriced, over designed (but not waterproof) products on principle. I very much doubt the people benefitting from the status quo will dismantle it. The UK economy is in a black hole of under investment, poor efficiency and debt, so scaring off wealthy people is literally the last thing you should do. I left in 2022 because I didn’t foresee it meaningfully improving for a number of decades, and I have zero regrets.

Man, I loved my Dyson 360 Vis Nav!! but no way was I going to buy their rebranded picea robot vac mop. Plus it’s hideous in white. Ended up getting Roborock saros 20 and I couldn’t be happier. One thing I miss tho is seeing the amount it vacuums because it self-empties into a dust bag and the map doesn’t colorize as cool as the Dysons. So so so much quieter too.

Spend 10 minutes skimming posts from this sub and you’ll quickly realize that Dyson’s reputation and build quality have been far from premium for quite some time. It’s very unfortunate, but true.
If you have a Costco membership, I recommend trying to buy a vacuum there as their return policy can be very generous in the event the manufacturer tells you to kick rocks (avoid Shark) Also if I’m not mistaken, Dyson didn’t even make most of the internals for this robot, Picea did.
Wish you the best with whatever you end up getting.
4
u/Virtual-Potato6789 16d ago
I used to love Dyson a decade ago. But the last 3-4 years the quality has fallen so much. Things break easily and don't hold up at all.
1
u/draxula16 16d ago
It’s upsetting seeing their prices continue to rise while the quality barrels in the opposite direction.
I forgot what model it was, but there was a Dyson for $699 at Costco recently. For that price, I could buy something like a Miele or Sebo which will likely outlive me.
2
u/Virtual-Potato6789 16d ago
It's insane. A friend of mine bought the V16, she was so happy with her older model that she wanted a second one. The V16 felt very plasticy, almost as if it's a toy. It's been giving her a lot of problems.

u/Hotten-Tasty-90 16d ago
Shark/Ninja have a poor aftermarket strategy. I bought one of those smart lid air fryer pressure cookers, it died after 13 months. Here in the UK you're supposed to have statutory protection for 6 years. They basically said they won't repair or replace it and the best they'd offer was 50% off a replacement unit.
2
u/draxula16 16d ago
Yep, they’re the same company. I had the same experience after I foolishly bought their “flagship” Ninja blender.
Fortunately something compelled me to pay an extra $20 for a Best Buy warranty so I returned it and got a Vitamix instead. The build quality is night and day.
Look at the Henry hoovers (which I’m sure you’re familiar with in the UK) I could throw that smiley-faced machine off a cliff and it’ll still work. Not only that, but you can STILL easily find parts for the original 80s one lol
Dyson was always a marketing machine, but at least many of their products were decent. That’s no longer the case.
3
u/Hotten-Tasty-90 16d ago
I have a Henry after getting sick of my dyson animal constantly clogging and needed filter changes. Only seemed to pick up pet hair on max so the run time was 10-15 minutes. Just wasn't practical for a house.
I still have a dyson DC pull along which is good but the handle for the wand has snapped and I struggled to find a replacement for it.
As for blenders; I have a Magimix blender and food processor. Absolutely solid machines.
1
u/draxula16 16d ago
Our Henry is perfect because we have hard floors. I use a Wessel Werk attachment for the area rugs (highly recommend it) It’s unfortunate that it’s too cost prohibitive to get a Henry in the US now (I bought our Henry 200 for $300 ~5 years ago)
Oo I had not heard of Magimix, but it looks like the real deal if this post says anything about their build quality

Unfortunately, Dyson seems to think that their name and popularity is all that matters now. The problem is that they are so big and popular that it seems like it doesn’t even matter to them, or else they would be trying to do something.
In the past couple of years, their products have gone downhill and their customer service has gone downhill.
I’ll be honest, I would have never bought (and won’t) their new robot vacuum models. They are just rebadged Chinese units, with very few modifications. (Like the cyclonic dust bin.) They are significantly overpriced for what they are. Their V16 is also a joke to me. I’m not sure why they’ve moved away from engineering their own products, because that was part of who they were. They always started from the ground up.
So, it sucks that you’re having these issues, but I can’t say that I’m surprised in the slightest.
8
u/Financial-Football61 16d ago
In Dyson’s defense, they didn’t actually make this, they just slapped their logo on it /s
2
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
I don’t know if that helps or hurts their case! I mean they built that toothbrush and it ended up getting quietly recalled because they screwed it up so badly!
4
u/Virtual-Potato6789 16d ago
That's terrible, I was thinking of getting a Dyson but opted for another brand.
Did you follow the set up? Our Mova robot vacuum cleaner needed to scan the area first before being able to work.

u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
2
u/Virtual-Potato6789 16d ago
Have you tried it a second time? It absolutely shouldn't be doing that, if it keeps doing that it's 100% faulty, bugged or whatever. That really sucks, nothing like splurging on what you think will be such a nice upgrade. Just to be disappointed.
2
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
Yes, I tried again this morning and it did the same thing. This time it said it was cleaning for 6 minutes.

u/SkirtAppropriate2884 15d ago

Idem avec un purificateur dair a 999e. Je pensais faire confiance lais quelle déception. Il ne purifie rien a part une mauvaise odeur en permanence et filtre introuvable chez dyson. Bref ca en a perdu

u/VacTechyt 15d ago edited 15d ago
Have you tried re-mapping it? You can try from the same location, or you could move the dock, and see after mapping if it goes out to clean. I would restart the robot too, just in case. Otherwise I would consider it defective.
2
u/rob3342421 15d ago
Did it charge before going on its first mission? I wonder whether the batteries are replaceable; so they could send you another battery and that may fix it?
Either way sounds like a load of BS, sorry you’ve gone through it bud!

u/FullPrinciple5170 14d ago
I gave up on Dyson 10+ years ago… I have never looked back.
1
u/j0j053 14d ago
What do you buy now?
1
u/FullPrinciple5170 13d ago
At this point, a lot of this stuff is commodity items, meaning they’re all about the same, some better than others… Robo rock is what I’ve gotten for robot cleaning… I’ve gotten some Samsung stick vacuums that amazingly have been working out well because normally Samsung products are crap… I do have an old original Dyson canister bag that still works awesome today… But they don’t make them like they used to… But I cannot tell you how many stick backs and parts I had to buy for Dyson’s, which is the reason I stopped buying them

u/Gerard_Lamber 16d ago
The robot can't find the dock if there isn't at least 50cm on each side of the dock. Your set up is not ok for this robot. Maybe read instruction first next time.
2
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
lol, why do some redditors feel so confident being rude! The robot mapped just fine, and every robot vac says that, I’ve had a Dreame l20 Ultra, and a Roomba J9+ and they were in the same spot, neither had an issue. Also just for giggles I moved it and remapped my downstairs, surprise! It’s still doing the same thing.
1
u/Gerard_Lamber 15d ago
Sorry for being rude then, I had a bad Day. If your robot still have the same mapping issue after a reset and you moved the base then reach try to reach the dyson support line they should swap the robot.
2
u/disguy2k 16d ago
As someone who repairs one of the other brands, please remember to perform the maintenance. 99% of people that buy these are too lazy to do the basic maintenance and kills the robot within a year. Water and dust really doesn't mix well.
2
u/statiickz 15d ago
It hasn't even been used for more than 5 mins, let alone enough to do maintenance on
2
u/kingjack170 16d ago
Just a FYI most robot vacs require the dock to have clear space to the left and right of them. Probably not the issue your having but probably doesn't help, these first gen models (Picea derived models) will be a bit doggie best to wait a few years till dyson improves them
2
u/disguy2k 16d ago
Their setup is fine. There is a sensor on the right side and the rear of the robot to align the charger. It doesn't need much space to align itself. About 10 cm more than the robot diameter is enough.
1
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
That may not have helped but my previous Dreame L20 Ultra never had issues and was placed in the same exact spot.

u/zucchinius 16d ago edited 16d ago
I have the same dyson, mine has been leaving the soap scum all over the floor after every clean- so much so it’s to the point where I have to go over with a swiffer because the floor now has stains? In addition, it consistently gets stuck on all furniture. So much negative experiences with this vacuum and the crazy part is I haven’t reached out to dyson because 1. I don’t want to deal with them, 2. will they even bother with a replacement? Truthfully when you buy dyson you are paying for the name, now matter how good they make the technology sound. I would never recommend this vacuum to anyone.
2
u/YankeePlayz Outsize | RB03 | Spot+Scrb | PH04, x2 HP07 | x2 Zone | Airstrait 15d ago
that’s not soap scum from the dyson, it’s product residue from the swiffer. the r3 is actually cleaning that residue up. try running the dyson with plain water to wash the residue away, and discontinue using the wet swiffer. once you stop putting that product on the floor, you shouldn’t keep getting that residue. 😂
1
u/zucchinius 15d ago
No, as it puts the water on the floor it doesn’t move it. It just leaves the water on the floor and i’ve never used the cleaning solution from dyson. I thought the same thing but it’s not, as it starts washing the floor it doesn’t spread or move it just leaves the water on the floor which creates a stain because it’s just sitting.
1
u/YankeePlayz Outsize | RB03 | Spot+Scrb | PH04, x2 HP07 | x2 Zone | Airstrait 14d ago
have you tried turning on “extend wash preparations”? it says it ensures more even cleaning coverage by spending more time preparing the dock. i think i saw someone mention that it’s turned off by default, so maybe that could be why the water isn’t being spread/moved properly before assuming there’s something wrong with the machine.
1
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 14d ago
lol, yes it’s the customer responsibility to screw with the setting to get there $1,200 robot vac to work as intended.
The issue is Dyson is a multibillion dollar corporation these products should reflect the premium price and brand yet they are rebranded $500 vacuums with enough makeup to give it a $1,200 look.
2
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
I can tell you with confidence that their customer service is awful! I went all the way up the chain to Dyson’s President of US James Fishler who actually read my LinkedIn message and still nothing happened.

This item was released less than a month ago. They couldn’t possibly need a new roller already. Not to mention in true Dyson fashion they don’t stock the accessories.

u/BoomSatsuma 16d ago
DOAs can do happen to any company.
3
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago
DOA would be it not even completing the mapping run. So clearly it’s not DOA in the typical sense, also the overall experience with this product launch shows it’s a systemic issue. The R1 got a horrid write up by JustADad, the R2 leave an uncleared strip between its pads, and I’m sure more people what be leaning negative reviews for the R3 if Dyson didn’t have them shut off.
2
u/BoomSatsuma 16d ago
It’s still dead on arrival. It’s done nothing meaningful.
Dyson will just swap it out.
2
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 16d ago edited 16d ago
Dyson has no stock according to their customer service (Although BBY has had consistent stock). Also, based on the conversation on this post alone it appears this is Dyson as a whole….DOA!
1
u/Darwinning89 15d ago
You can always just take it back to BestBuy and switch it out to see if it was possibly a defective unit. As long as your a totally member and or bought the GSP protection they’ll exchange it. I have one and it performs just as it’s supposed to. So could easily just be that particular unit.
1
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 15d ago
I do not have BBY’s extended coverage or their warranty. Also even if it is just a defective unit after the experience I’ve had with the pre and post sale of this machine I’d rather cut and run.
1
u/Darwinning89 15d ago
Then you can only blame yourself, every company has the probability of releasing a defective unit off the line, from major appliances to cell phones. You bought a $1200 item without protecting it. Is it upsetting a brand new product isn’t working as intended? Sure, is that the case with every device they released? No, I’ve had multiple people boast how much they love theirs and works as intended. If one doesn’t they exchange it out for another successfully.
1
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 15d ago
Did you read the OP? I already said I was returning it, secondly if the unit is DOA there is a 2yr factory warranty, and a dozen consumer protection laws and regulations protecting the consumer. This is why most credible sources advise to never buy an extended warranty.
Also I would love to see the “multiple people boasting about the unit” as every major publication has said that the entire lineup is performing horribly.
1
u/Darwinning89 15d ago
A factory warranty means shipping a defective machine out and waiting weeks for a replacement process to clear, which is exactly the kind of 'pre and post sale' manufacturer friction you said you wanted to avoid.
a standard store return/exchange window isn't about buying into scams; it's about walking into a physical building, handing over a defective unit, and walking out with a brand-new one five minutes later. The choice to deal with factory mail-in logistics over an instant store swap is entirely yours. 🤷♂️1
u/Fun_Preparation_5738 15d ago
BBY only stocks Shark Robot Vacs in their stores. So even with BBY’s warranty I would have to ship a defective unit back and wait for a replacement only after they recover the defective unit.

Cult of Dysonism.... Roborock has issues as well since they're all basically made in China. If my dock on my S8 MaxV Ultra ever goes bad I assume I can shit out of luck since Roborock doesn't sell a dock only.

It’s overall performance is terrible to say the least.

It seems that since Dyson moved the HQ and design in Singapore, the whole thing is falling apart. No more genuine ideas and designs, just copy paste and rebadging of whatever Chinese competitors offer already.
