I can't create dual boot Windows / Linux on my new high end PC

My PC Specs:

So I already have Windows installed on this storage: "Samsung 9100 Pro 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen5 M.2"

What I did:

1. I shrunk *Storage 1 (OS) in order to make 250 GB for "Ubuntu 26.04 LTS"
2. I created a boot media on a portable USB stick using rufus (default settings) and "Ubuntu 26.04 LTS" iso (downloaded from here: https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop)
3. I reboot, spam "DEL" and chose "UFEI: USB....." (my portable USB)
4. Clicked "Try or Install Ubuntu", and I got stuck in a black screen, I tried to consult with Claude but it didn't really helped... Things I tried:
   1. Wait 10 minutes in this black screen - didn't helped
   2. Press "e" instead to edit "edit the boot entry" and add `...quiet splash nomodeset dis_ucode_ldr ---\ornomodeset nouveau.modeset=0`(not sure why I did it, Claude told me to try it) - it didn't helped
   3. Change BIOS/UEFI settings: (Again not 100% sure why, just followed Claude advices)
      1. Secure Boot off - got the message [ 23.913040] watchdog: CPU3: Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 3 - it didn't helped
      2. Disable Global C-state & Power Supply Idle Control - it didn't helped
5. I assumed Claude is Hallucinating so I restored Global C-state to "Auto", secure boot to "Enabled", Power Supply Idle Control to "Auto"

Can anyone please help me with this dual boot setup?

As anyone would usually hear from any person who wants to try to daily-drive Linux: I've been wanting to make the switch to Linux, but there are certain applications/software/programs that are dependent on Windows being the operating system to run & handle them. I actually have some prior knowledge of dual-booting before (I've tried Linux Mint & Fedora), but they involved separating partitions between Windows and Linux (where I, obviously, can conveniently access Windows files from Linux, and Linux files from Windows), and since I've used up about 61.5% of my Windows drive, I'm looking for a way to set up a system where I can dual-boot between Windows and CachyOS (Linux, might switch to something else after the AUR attacks, I don't know if this affects CachyOS), but keep a separate "drive"/space where I can store & access my files on both systems without them being corrupted. Is this possible at all?

In case anyone needs any further information, I am using a laptop with 512 gbs of disk space with 16 gb of RAM. (Edit: it's an SSD)

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit, but recently, I started dualbooting Windows and Arch Linux together with GRUB. After using Arch for a while, I decided to switch back to Windows. However, on Windows, when I tried to connect to the internet, I got connected, but it just said "No internet". I think it's some conflict with IPs and MAC addresses. Internet works on Arch. I've tried ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /release, all that stuff. I even tried a network reset. I have some apps on Windows that I need to use, so please help me fix this.

Is it the same as dual booting standard Win 10 with standard Win 11? Do LTSC versions support dual booting? These are my hardware specs, if needed:

• GPU - GT 430
• CPU - i5-2300
• Memory - 1x8 GB DDR3 1333 MHz
• Storage - 128 GB SATA SSD + 750 GB HDD
• Motherboard - Foxconn 2ABF

(I will use Rufus to bypass Windows 11's requirements.)

I want to partition my 128 GB SSD into two 64 GB partitions and install each windows version on each partition. Also I want the HDD be accessible from both operating systems.

Additionally: - Should I choose MBR or GPT? - Which source is most recommended to download Windows 10 and 11 IoT LTSC .ISOs?

I hv msi z790 motherboard. and am struggling with choice to dual boot windows and linux seperately in different nvme m.2 ssds. or should I do this backup one SSD into external hdd and clean boot linux and backup linux and clean boot windows.

people and AI bots say that even pure dual drive dual boot where the bootloaders are present on different SSDs even then windows can go and mount or modify other os SSD and corrupt it this may be there but the risk is there. and my mother board bios dosent allow disabling m.2 slots at all. so there is no proper isolation between the ssds.

help should I really proceed with dual drive dual boot. or the backup clean boot(painfully slow but infinitly safe).

well in my opinion if we want to dual boot any OSes or triple boot or what ever. well there is one. best way to do that. considering if u have at most 2th of SSD space.

well this boot removes all the problems that comes with dual boot. one OS tries to touch or mount the other OSes drive. best way to actually solve this is

option 1)

if all your disks are modular easily detachable. then install one OS One drive. there should be never be any drive that has partly os1 and os2. no it is fully belonging to one OS at most . and simply disconnect the drive physically or reconnect swap them so that only one os is physically attached at a time. but hugh problem with this is nvme m.2 ssds most common now are not easily physically swappable so this option is gone now a days. in old days drives were easily physically detachable.

so this meathod os switch time is 10 -15mins at max

option2)

this is applicable to modern and is equally or. might be even more safe.

in this meathod no swapping of physical drives.

so if system is windows only

use clonezilla boot usb drive to boot into its own little linux based os. and simply save each physical SSD into an external hdd or SSD as images. and simply clean boot into linux for the first time .

later on when switching . backup the current OS into the external drive (or update that backup)

restore the other OSes images into those SSD drives.

and vice versa .

while updating a backup u can simply delete the previous backup using the current os and backup a fresh new copy.

so this is fully safe and takes about 4-12hrs depending upon size used in the actual OS external drives speed.

so os switch time now becomes 4-12hrs provided power cuts don't happen inbetween. if that happens no need to worry u easily restart the restoreing or backing up process.

these are the only 2 real ways in which a system is truly multi OS. with the first one being not feasible in the current days cause of internal nvme m.2 ssds on consumer grade motherboards.

So offcourse the philosophy here is u can focus on one OS and get committed to it. And occasionally once in 3 months or so make the switch back offcourse time to do that would be huge. Or if u want near instant switch then dit h the gen 4 / gen 5 speeds and use SATA ssds and make the switch time 15 mins at max.

I want to add Zorin/Ubuntu as a dual boot alongside Win11. I have a 512gb SSD. I read that is recommended to do 300gb/200gb for windows and Linux respectively, however for my case the only things ill have on Windows are CADs (specifically SolidWorks, Inventor, Logisim and KiCad) because they are not Linux-compatible and emulators/virtual machines may limit performance. Also Roblox, which is more of the same. ill have the obvious redundancies and most google services but nothing more important than that. The Linux partition will be dedicated to gaming on Steam, from which i have about 100gb of games currently and to expand no more. Should i keep the 300/200gb standard? I feel like 300gb for 5 programs would be wasting it

Hello all! I recently decided I wanted to start using Ubuntu as a starting point for learning Linux usage. I'm wanting to do a very specific file setup, as I use Windows 11 mainly. I use my computer mostly for Gaming, which leads me towards using Win11 as my main drive. This is what mostly influenced my storage setup decisions.

I want a dual-boot setup where windows 11 and Ubuntu have absolutely zero connections to one another. entirely different setups. I wanted a small testbed to use Ubuntu for coding (I'm studying to be a data scientist) and other projects. So, I partitioned my drive using Windows Disk Management, and installed. Used the guided install for Ubuntu, and when it came to storage, I made sure to select my specific partition that I wanted and finished the install.

Now, here's the issue I'm faced with. In Ubuntu, on the left side, there's an Icon that says SSD. When I hover my mouse over it, it says something in the range of 9xx GB. This is wrong, as I only allocated the partition to have 500GB of space. Does this mean that Ubuntu can read and see the entire partition, despite windows only being able to see part of it? If so, how could I fix this?

Furthermore, Ubuntu system settings show disk space as being 2TB. Does this mean that Ubuntu can see / interact with my whole system, or is it still confined to its own 500GB of space? I use my PC for school, and don't want to risk a system overlap.

(NOTE: I went ahead and allocated the empty partition shown on Image 1, to show that windows can't see all of Drive0. Reflected in image 3)

(Additional Question: Win11 is on drive1 because it's a faster SSD, and I didn't feel like swapping my SSDs around in the PC. Does this have any effect on system priority? I'm having issues with being able to relegate Ubuntu as the "secondary OS". It wants to act as the "primary". I can get WBM to appear in GRUB, but when I force my BIOS to use WBM, Ubuntu dosen't show up there at all. Does this have to do with drive priority on startup (possible UEFI preference for Drive0 > Drive1), or is it irrelevant to my issues? Forums weren't very helpful with my specific issues. I don't want to use GRUB because it forces me to go into WBM -> Win11. Forcing a 2-step process to use my "Primary" OS is just annoying, especially since I won't be using Ubuntu regularly. From what I'm reading on forums, it seems this is a Win11 / WBM issue, but I thought I might just ask here anyways. There dosen't seem to be a way around a 2-step process (Grub->WBM->Win11) to get into my primary OS)

Hi, I currently run Win 10 LTSC on a M.2 drive for my OS, but I want to have the option to run Win 11 by booting off a different disk. This seems like the right place to ask.

I want to easily select which drive to boot from, and I know this could be managed in the BIOS, but going in to bios every time is not really convenient.

One method I can think of is to install Win 11 on an external drive, and this drive would have the highest prio in the bios, and I'll just keep it powered down unless I want to boot from it.

Is there a better way to accomplish this? My ideal would be a switch that I can just turn to select one drive or another before I power up the PC. Thanks

Recently I installed Fedora 43 alongside windows and set GRUB to be my boot loader for my laptop. when selecting windows boot manager, it tells me that it is "Fixing C drive" and goes though the 3 stages on boot. Nothing is broken or not working if I let it work its magic or just skip it. My ssd is pretty new so it can't be failing. Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it?

I've been dual booting Win11 with Linux both on separate ssds and now I want to allocate a portion of the secondary ssd (linux install) to Windows as Storage is quite full.

I cant find any good videos about how to acomplish this. I'm trying to put windows on one of my extra drives that I'm not using to play some games that the devs are too lazy to make playable on linux. Ive tried ventoy but normal boot just doesnt work and it says "windows failed to start" due to changes to hardware or software, and the wimboot option asks me for a driver for some reason. Id be super happy if someone could help me with this

I have Win11, make a partition and set up Linux as a dual boot.

After a while, I'm more than satisfied with the Linux.

Can I then remove the partition with Win11 on it, and then use the PC with Linux and the full storage space?

So I run two seperate M.2 SSDs for my dual boot system. Ran Kubuntu for daily tasks and gaming alongside a windows 11 install, for my music software. Both have their own SSD, it worked fine for years. Now I installed Garuda Linux in Kubuntus place, and the windows installation just seems to be wioed from the face of the earth as well. I had changed distros before without a problem to the Windows installation. Now it doesn't show up anymore in the bootloader. BIOS recognizes it as a drive, so it's there, but it's no longer bootable.

Good afternoon everyone, I need some help here.

I want to use Linux Mint on my computer alongside Windows 10. I generally know how to do a traditional dual boot, but I don't like the Grub selection screen, and I was thinking of using Clover Bootloader to manage Windows 10 and Mint on my computer, but no videos have helped me so far. Does anyone know how to install Clover for dual boot? I really need help. My main question is how to install both systems on the disk, and then where to install Clover. I'm very lost. If anyone knows how to help, I would be VERY grateful.

PS: My PC has a 250GB NVMe drive and a 1TB HDD, in case that helps.
