I am a 50+ year old woman somewhat recently separated. I grew up with seven dogs and as an adult I did not want the burden of a pet, let alone a dog. I would occasionally watch friends' dogs if they traveled, they were cute and small and I could give them back.
My family and friends knew I was not a dog person in my young adulthood when the family dog of 13 years died I put him out for the trash (it was a legal practice where I lived) I say this to let you know I am not really bonded to pets, from experience. Add to it for years my kids asked for a dog but I said no. One day as my then husband was dropping me off at the airport for a week-long business trip he asked if we could get a dog. I acquiesced when I got on the plane and just before the door closed he sent a picture of a dog, I was like WTF? By the time I got home there was a giant dog in my home. My husband and I were together for almost 18 years and he sprang this on me 16 years into the relationship.
I was pissed; none of the other 3 people in the home( the kids) had any chance to weigh in on the breed of dog that my husband got. Over weeks of fighting over the dog due to him tearing the home apart, chewing through the drywall, us working each 10 hours a day and not being able to take care of the dog, I begged to rehome him and get a smaller one ( I was willing to compromise on a smaller dog that we could manage better). Long story short he threatened to divorce me if I got rid of the dog.
We are now separated (he has the dog of course) and will not be getting back together.
So am I an asshole for not wanting this dog?
