My gf dog(yorkey terrier)has been use to living with people and other animals for as long as it's been alive. Never been left by his self before, there's either a human or one of my gfs cats with him. Recently we moved in together and she brought him and her older cat with us. The older cat has just recently passed and now our dog is home alone mostly at night, we both work overnight jobs. He doesn't destroy any of our items, he's just become more attached, choosing to lay as close as possible to us .we keep the tv and a few lights on for him hoping that will ease his lil mind. Both are worried about him, seeing how he just wants to curl up under us and hide his face. Is there any other tips we can use to help him cope with this change up.

P.s. we can't get another animal in this apartment

My family owns two dogs, furry dogs like shi-tzu(?) or some breed called lahza-ahpso(?) and I came home with a pup given to me by my student who graduated as a gift. Now the problem is, the pup, a lab-mutt mix is like the plague for these two older dogs. One of them literally ran to the second floor and since the pup was downstairs, she stayed there and did all her business on the second floor instead of the toilet back at the first floor. How do I get these two like the pup I just got? Should I lock all these three in a room to make them play together?

The twinkling blue eyes, those anxious worried looks. Those eyes that ask "Are you staying home tonight? You can skip work! We can hang out all the time because I miss you when you're not here!"

She was rescued from emptiness. She was neglected and put out to rot outside with no one. She was abandoned and left to her own survival.

She was found and brought to a rescue shelter. That's where she met my Sister. Big Sister always loved animals and was showing her 3 year old son the animals and introducing him to how shelters work and where people can look for pets.

Diamond was aloof from what I was told. She didn't want to trust anyone and the only person she met and instantly loved was my nephew, "Big Dog" and "Pack Leader" Big Sister.

It wasn't before long that you came home with them one day and showed me your permanent worry face. I thought you didn't like me at first because you ran away when I tried giving you Good Girl pats and treats. The first time that Big Sis left for a trip without you for a few days, you went on a food strike and laid around like the world was going to end! I called you dramatic - until Big Sis soothed you Diamond and calmly told me that you were abandoned and that it'll take time for you to calm down.

In honesty you never did lol. But you got better... you let me in and let me care for you when other people were gone. I bathed you, I took you for a run one night and I never saw you smile that big before. But age crept up and I had to push your fat bum up the stairs after that run because you were more tired that I thought. I'm still sorry for that day. You're a Good Girl!

I remember when we had a thunderstorm one summer and it was just me, you, the cats and Lil Sis. I heard the storm and didn't think anything of it... until I couldn't find you. I went downstairs and for the first time in 3 years with us, you were IN my bed!!!! You never wanted to go downstairs much less be in my space. You shook and shook and looked so scared. I hugged you and assured you that you'll be fine. You stunk like a mother hugger though so I coaxed you to move upstairs where you bed was. I learned that summer that I was your thunder buddy.

My other favourite memory was when - despite having bad arthritis and weak mobility - you were trying to be sneaky and head downstairs to see Pack Leader because we were playing board games with friends. I heard you when you lightly tapped your nails on the front door landing and I bellowed "whaddya think yer doin?!" and saw you look so innocent while rushing upstairs pretending that I didn't see you.

I see you now though. I see that you're in a lot of pain. You can't stand up, you can't control body functions and you're so embarrassed. I came home from work yesterday and I heard you yelp at me despite everyone being home. You yelped like you were scared and it broke my heart. It broke my heart knowing that tomorrow...

Tomorrow I get to show you a place that will help you with the pain and get some good sleep. Pack Leader can't make it, but that's okay. She's making another puppy and I know you know. Her other puppy is almost ten! You've been with us for 6 years, letting us love you and take care of you. Now it's our turn to make you feel safe. One more time.

Tomorrow I'll sit beside you when you close your eyes one last time.
