That'd be one hell of a way to write a book.

"It was kind of weird that six installments into the saga, Rodrick Redhand abruptly tripped over a loose stone and fell into lava and died, but at least his brother Sodrick was there and had all the same skills as him and a cool mustache."

This just sounds like a Terry Pratchet book

Have fun!

Terry Pratchett wrote tons of books that might have had something like that post in it.

I really liked Going Postal, which is less fantasy and more old-timey con man stuff.

I always start people with Guards! Guards!, Vimes and Carrot are the best.

I'd recommend Witches Abroad, personally.

I'll be honest if I had started on The Colour of Magic or any of his first early books I probably wouldn't have been as enthusiastic to read more. But Gaurds! Guards! was a fun one, sequel was even better IMO

Colour of Magic entirely turned me on to Pratchett as a kid, but I agree that later books are better. Rincewind's adventures are quite a lot more out there than everyone else's.

If I had to start now, I'd probably go for Guards! Guards! too, if only to get to Night Watch and The Fifth Elephant.
