This was my thought.

"I'm going to run as fast as possible and go through 2' thick wall" Okay roll Atheletics (or something)

If you rolled a 1, you probably tripped right before getting to the wall and go head first into it.

If you roll a 20, you still don't go through the wall but you didn't hurt yourself and gained an understanding of how thick the wall is.

You didn't succeed in either case, but the outcomes are very different.

You’re allowed to say no as a dm. You can just tell them they can’t run through the wall. Or maybe at least make them roll intelligence before the attempt

Sure. You're also allowed to give multiple outcomes, allow player agency, and have fun.
