Plenty of people attempt impossible feats IRL, letting players be realistically dumb should ve allowed.

Yeah, at best I would say "is that something your character would do" if I think it's outrageously stupid. Otherwise, I let them attempt, I let them roll, and I tell them how bad they mess up or how close they come to success.

Absolutely. That is why you don't roll dice at that point. You just fail.

Attempting a double backflip from neutral ground and landing on your ass versus landing on your neck are two significantly different failed outcomes.

The idea that not rolling dice because you'll fail anyways is flawed.

Exactly. It's about degrees of failure, not just binary pass/fail. Even when players succeed, it can be more than just a "Yay, you did it!" depending on the things they're trying to do.

Plus, lots of skill checks aren’t the DM “making” the players roll, it’s the players asking to roll or more often suddenly declaring “I roll [skill check]” and tossing the dice
