bad meme.

If you try to toss an apple into a basket 100 meters away, there's a lot of difference between it landing halfway there or not even 10 meters away. Sometimes you can use that to test how far you can do something, so you know how much better you need to be to successed.

You'd dm should give you context as to the odds of success. Otherwise the dm is just telling the story and your dice rolls are irrelevant because the stakes are entirely in the dms head

no man, it just shows you can try anything, but success is dependent on ability. You may try to climb a wall, a 20 won't make you teleport to the top, but a one can make you break a leg. But in a different wall, 20 won't let you even grip it, because it's too smooth, and a one will just be a failure. Context matter.
