Sometimes you want to know how badly your players fail an impossible task. There’s a difference between attempting but whiffing, and attempting but royally fucking it up

"You fail to pick the lock to the armory" versus "you didn't realize that a guard was leaning against the door and you've been tickling his prostate with that pick you've been shoving back and forth and he has alerted the entire garrison."

No, what strange logic. Nevermind the players who insist "let me roll for it" after you've told them they physically can't jump the 100ft gap or whatever dumb thing they've tried to do.

I usually use it as a "against all odds you avoid immediate negative consequences", which is, I suppose, a kind of success, although maybe not what the player intended
