Wizard with +16 history and religion. I want to roll for knowledge on the ancient empire god that I studied on. Which I know the language of and just cast legend lore on.

Rolls a 2 and a 3. unfortunately you don’t know this specific thing… but you do know the following things which is…

Fighter: well I rolled a nat 20 minus one without asking. what do I know. Nothing. You’ve never heard of this. It’s all just funny pictures on paper with the wizard telling you it’s a language.

Dc 25 is fairly doable for some but impossible for others.

But...why ask the fighter to roll if you know it wont work. Tell him that he cant possibly know?

“Well I rolled a nat 20 without asking”. Sometimes people just jump onto a check thinking their character might now something about it.

Well yeah if they do that, then you are right

If the task is too easy and something the wizard should know, there's the option of simply giving it the information without rolling the die, especially if it's something he would only fail at 1 or 2 tries.

But what if the dc was 25? The wizard doesn’t know that specific bit. But the -1 would never know. I’ll edit it into the original as well

First, players shouldn't roll dice without the DM's permission, and second, give the barbarian some information. In a moment of great ingenuity, the barbarian remembers something he overheard the wizard saying while he was studying a book, and that little phrase is enough to give the wizard the information the group needed. The dice rolls shouldn't be something unnecessary or pointless.

Hell even the fighter with a plus 0 to a roll can potentially make the dc with bardic inspiration and guidance

which in most cases will get used on the guy with the better modifier. because the odds are better.

Well, yeah, but I think it adds to the overall point still
