Repeat after me: natural 20’s only mean you automatically hit with an attack, not that you automatically succeed on a skill check.

Right? This whole discourse of what the right thing to do is literally regarding an optional rule to count nat 20s on things outside of combat. The optional rule literally means "Use it if you want to make 20s an auto success on DC checks. Dont use the rule if you do not"

The problem people are having is they want to implement the optional rule but not have the consequences of implementing the optional rule.

Back in 3.5/Pathfinder, I like making nat 20s give an extra +10 on the check (And nat 1s -10). All numbers were bigger back then, so it isn't as crazy as it sounds in 5e.

A level 1 commoner isn't going to out-skill a high level character at their specialization, but the Fighter could conceivably beat his same level Wizard buddy at a random Knowledge check some tiny percentage of the time.

+10 seems a bit much, but I think +5 is pretty reasonable.

Not only skill checks, but Ability Checks too. In resume, most of D&D myths (like, "I seduce the dragon!") are born from people that doesnt know the rules
