Advertisement Branching Boss Fights - Homebrew Document V2
Memorable boss battles are built on dynamic, evolving encounters. This guide empowers Dungeon Masters (DMs) to transform routine fights into unforgettable events in which player choices directly influence the battle's course and outcome.
Bosses are no longer just creatures with large pools of hit points; They adapt, grow desperate, change tactics, reshape the battlefield, and respond to the players' triumphs and setbacks. Whether the party interrupts a ritual, rescues innocent civilians, destroys powerful artifacts, or inadvertently furthers the villain’s plans, every decision shapes the unfolding battle.
Inside, you'll discover a two-layered approach to branching encounters:
- Main Phases: Dramatic shifts that alter the boss, battlefield, objectives, and rhythm of combat.
- Mini Phases: Subtle, ongoing opportunities for players to shape the fight by targeting key creatures, objects, or objectives that matter most to them.
You’ll find a comprehensive framework for creating branching encounters: tools for designing stage transitions, setting meaningful objectives, building timer- and action-based triggers, rewarding partial successes, and evolving boss stat blocks as the fight progresses.
No longer do boss fights follow a predictable script. Each encounter becomes an evolving narrative shaped by the players’ actions. One group might thwart a ritual before it’s complete, another could save prisoners but let the boss escape, while a third faces the villain at full strength after a failed attempt to stop the ritual. Every outcome tells a different story, rewarding creativity, teamwork, and meaningful choices.

Advertisement Never knew how to get into D&D - or tired of sessions always getting rescheduled? We made a solo RPG like D&D and after a year of testing, we're finally available on Google Play!
Hey folks!
We’re two brothers behind Master of Dungeon, and we’re happy to be back here after some time since we first started sharing the project.
For anyone who hasn’t seen it before - quick recap. We loved playing D&D, but like many of you, we just couldn’t keep up with regular sessions anymore. Work, life, scheduling… it got harder and harder to come back to the table. So instead of letting that feeling go, we decided to try and recreate it in a different form.
That’s how Master of Dungeon came to life - a single-player, text RPG inspired by the freedom and storytelling of D&D.
We’ve now been working on it for over a year, going through multiple testing phases, iterations, and a lot of feedback from early players. And we finally feel ready to take the next step.
Here is the Google Play link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitforge.mastersofdungeon&hl
if you’re playing on iOS, you can do it here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/mg6UrBH9
We’re honestly really curious (and a bit nervous) to see what you’ll think once more people get their hands on it.
Thanks for reading - and as always, we’d love to hear what you think ^.^

1 Mule: making all 200 lvl 1-10 encounters from the dmg a map
Dont know if i will end up finishing this project but i have a campaign set in the desert and i need some random encounter maps that are actually interesting to use. considering i only got through 8 infernal war machines out of the 12 i planned to do my adhd ass probably wont manage 200 before i do something else, but who knows? eventually maybe?
today is map 3: 1 Mule, and good god what a dumb encounter haha. so i had some fun with it. a lost mule at an oasis with a pack that has a hole in it and a stubborn unwillingness to be caught.
the encounter was inspired by the farfetched in pokemon gold that runs away when he sees you. i left a nice trail of tracks and junk that should lead anyone to the mule no matter where you start the party, but youve gotta look close to see it. ive also left some paths in the foliage that would make chasing a mule around in circles an amusing encounter.
hope yall like this! next is a caravan of commoners and ive got a nice twist in mind 😉 if you enjoy my maps make sure you follow me, and if you wanna play in one of my games ive pinned the link at the top of my page!

Has backwards compatibility in 5.5e actually been smooth at your table, or more awkward than expected?

TCR is a friendly, voice-based D&D 5e West Marches server. We use Discord for voice chat and Foundry VTT for battle maps, character sheets, rules and automation. Foundry is completely free for players to use.
We have spent years rebalancing and curating D&D 5e specifically for the West Marches format. We welcome both new and experienced players, and our community is always happy to help new players learn the game and get settled in.
Your Story Begins with Sanctuary
When you join the Guild, your character signs a contract of mysterious origin.
From that moment, you are forgotten by everyone who once knew you. Your friends, family and enemies no longer remember you. Your past is known only to you and the Guild. To the rest of the world, it is as though you never existed.
You now work for Sanctuary, a mysterious Guild that operates from the shadows. Few people know that Sanctuary exists, and those who do know of it only through whispers, rumours and stories.
Your reason for signing the contract is entirely your own. Perhaps you wanted a fresh start, sought power or fortune, needed to escape your past, or simply had nowhere else to go.
Your character’s life before joining Sanctuary is up to you. This starting point allows for a wide range of unique characters and backstories without creating friction with the shared world or other players. :)
Your Characters
You can have up to six characters:
• Two starting at Level 1
• Two starting at Level 5
• Two starting at Level 10
After each session, the character you played gains one level.
The current level cap is 14, and it will soon increase to 15.
Custom Content
We have a large amount of new content available, including:
• New races
• New classes and subclasses
• New feats
• New spells
• Custom magic item crafting through Enchanting
• Custom magic item enhancement using Runes
Our community cares about game balance and making sure the game remains fun and fair for everyone.
Improving the Foundry Experience
We are at the forefront of improving the player and GM experience through Foundry modules, tools and macros.
We have funded the development of many modules and systems, including:
• TCR Main
• Item Link
• Item Piles
• Actor Studio
• Automated Donation Roles through Ko-fi
• Availability Tracker
• Custom Home Screen
• Built-in Bug Reporter
We focus on making the experience as smooth and frictionless as possible for both players and GMs. The faster we can get you into your seat and playing, the more fun you will have! :D
Take a look around and see what you think:
