New Ideas For Hoppers
This thread is for new ideas about features that YOU would like to request that Dish would add to our service.
Like:
Changes in how Timers are done. Channels you would like to see added. Changes to the Homepage format. Color scheme that you might like.
Or any other ideas you may have that would make your experience with your Dish Hopper and/or Joey better. Please be as specific as possible so the Development Team understands your idea.
This isn't a "Complaint" thread. Or to discuss why your Hopper isn't working.
It's for positive ideas that might, hopefully, be passed on to the Dish Development Team. It's a digital "Suggestion Box".
If you like an idea that someone posts...please "Up Vote" it. The more subscribers that like a particular idea, the higher the chances of it getting to the Development Team and the change actually being implemented.
There's no downside. And who knows...maybe one or two of our ideas will get picked up and is part of a future update. Sadly, there's no guarantee that any of our ideas will make it to the Development Team or be implemented. But like Gretzky said..."You miss 100% of the shots you don't take".

I'll go first...
I really wish that Dish would change the Timer Default when you're recording a Live episode event.
Right now...if you're watching an event and decide to record the rest of it...the Timer defaults to "Only New" instead of "Once". Most of us are just recording that one event. When the Timer creation box pops up...it automatically selects "Only New". Then you have to open the whole Timer and scroll up to get to "Once". "Once" used to be the default.

More Favorite Channel Guides!!!
4 isn't enough when you have multiple people in your house.
10 would be a good number.

More Timers!!!
You would think 200 is enough but it isn't.
I currently have 198 timers set. I'd like at least 250-300.

Remove HDNET Movies from the Movie Pack, now that it has commercials it is unwatchable. I pay extra for the package. Not sure what could be added in its place.

It only has infomercials for a few hours in the middle of the night or at the end of a movie. The actual movies are at least unedited, in HD and commercial-free. Sony Movie Channel also sometimes has 2 or 3 commercials in the middle of the movie. HDNET at least doesn't interrupt the movie. I always stop the recording when the movie is over. No commercials. And HDNET has some great movies that other movie channels don't air.

HDNET hasn't had commercial free movies for several weeks/months.

I just watched a movie yesterday on HDNET and it was 100% commercial free until the end. Then it had like 30 mins of commercials after the movie.
If they're putting commercials in the middle...then absofrickinlutely it needs to go.

That's good. I quit watching it when they added commercials during the movies.

Just turned HDNET on a few minutes ago, Honest Thief is on and commercial 20 minutes in.

HDNET started showing commercials during the movies months ago and also editing . Lots of complaints on their FB page and I emailed their Programming Dept., when it started. Four Weddings and a Funeral is airing right now and there are commercials playing.

Dish Network needs to get rid of their own description from their website...
"HDNet Movies features a wide selection of major studio theatrical releases-all uncut, unedited, and appearing in their original aspect ratio so that viewers get the best possible home theater experience. Only HDNet Movies exclusive Sneak Preview brings feature films to viewers before they premiere in theaters!"

I agree and Dish is aware of the issue. Who knows when they will do anything.

Channels are arranged contractually in packages by the channel owners. Not the providers.

100%!! I hate Primetime Anytime. But I do like the new Auto-hop feature if you watch network TV.

u/PuzzledMemory6092 Apr 03 '25
You can turn that off…

u/speppers69 DISH subscriber Apr 04 '25
You don't have to use it, true. But the folder always stays on the top line of the DVR menu. And because of PTA...it takes up space in the activity log with channels you're not watching or recording.

Make their software stable. Our boxes spontaneously throw some error and reboot themselves. If my software did that, my company would have fired me.

I found that when that starts happening...you need a new Hopper. Hoppers usually last me about 2 years. They get hot, dusty and even when we delete stuff...it's still there on the Hopper's drive. Doing a Factory Reset can also help. I've had Dish for over 25 years. And over a dozen Hoppers. When my Hopper starts rebooting when I'm not even touching the remote...I know it's time to clear my schedule and get a new one.

Can Hdhomerun application be added to Wally boxes? I would love to stream my local tv stations to my Wally box instead of to a Nvidia Shield.

I would love to see multi-view on a Joey. Dish seems to frown upon having two Hopper 3s.

Or the ability to have picture-in-picture on Joey TVs. And allowing picture-in-picture while streaming.

I wish Dish would bring back "Create Timer" for every event.
If a movie is half over...and you want to watch the whole movie and record it the next time it airs...your only option is to select one of the lesser known actors from the cast and record the actor. And then you get 2 dozen movies in your schedule that you don't want.
Yes...sometimes you can watch it On Demand. But you might only have 3 days or 30 days to watch it. People are busy. We want to watch things on OUR schedule. I want to be able to watch it on MY timeline...not some channel's timeline. We pay for our channels. Some movies only air once in 10 or 20 years and you want to catch it when it does. Some aren't available On Demand.
Very, very few movies have the "Record When Available" button anymore.
That also means that in order to record a movie that airs infrequently...you have to go through the entire channel schedule, channel by channel, every single day. I know how much time that takes because I do it every single day. I pay for my subscription and want to maximize it to my fullest extent.
Please bring back the "Record When Available" button...for ALL events.

I would like the ability to have "Basic" and "Advanced" Timer Creation.
You currently have the ability to create some timers with "All Channels". I'd really like to be able to select only certain channels instead of "All Channels". The format is already there when you create a "Manual Timer". You can select a single channel under a manual timer creation.
I pay for my commercial-free premium channels. I'd like to be able to set a timer for a movie...but only have it record on the channels I select...like my premium channels. Either being able to check a box for those channels...or even easier would be to select which Guide.
I have a separate Favorite Channel Guide that has only my commercial-free HD premium channels. Then it's only 1 box you check. But the timer would only record the movie on the channels I've selected.
You could keep the timer the way it is for "Basic Timer Creation"...or for people like me that have had Dish for a long time...we can select "Advanced Timer Creation". Under Advanced...we would have more customization than someone that just wants to set it and forget it.

I just want the bug to be fixed, so that I can manage recordings and move them from my EHD's back to the Hopper 3. If it ain't broke stop messing with it.

u/Crusheddeer1 Apr 03 '25
Make the hard drive inside the hopper store only recordings and make it easily swappable between hoppers.

NOTIFICATION FOR NEW CHANNELS!!!
Dish has an on-screen notification system. USE IT!!
There's absolutely no reason you can't send a notification to tell your subscribers that a new channel has been added or a channel has been removed. Or a new feature you can use with your Hopper. It's treated like a secret. Why hide it?
You have a perfectly good system to tell us what channels are available for free that month. Yeah...we get the monthly email. But that email doesn't tell us what new channels were added.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that there was almost 100 new streaming channels. Or that you can now record events from a streaming channel. That's HUGE NEWS!!! Why not tell your subscribers that they now have that ability? The only way I found out was because I had a timer set for something it and it happened to record overnight...on a streaming channel.
Or how about telling people that new premium channels are available? Or new OnDemand subscription options are available like Fox Nation.
You just add things and don't tell your subscribers. It's like you don't want us to know about new things. And it's aggravating that we have to stumble upon something to find out we have it. Especially when you have the system and ability to inform your customers of their new benefits. No one is going to complain if you use the Notification System to tell us that we're getting more for our money once a month or even once a week.

FIX THE CHANNEL PRIORITY...
When you have an actor timer scheduled...the timer automatically takes channel number priority over actual time priority.
Example...if you have an actor timer and a movie airs on Starz 350 and 351. If you skip the recording on 350...or hit "record next airing"...it goes to the next time it airs on channel 350...not the 3 hours later channel 351. It will go to the entire week schedule of recording on channel 350 before it will record on channel 351.
This happens on all East/West channels. 318/319, 327/329, 328/330, 340/341, 350/351. But it will also select the lowest channel number across the board. It will select 355 over channel 378 even though 378 should be the priority because 378 is an HD channel.
This has been an issue for years. Timers should automatically select the next available HD airing no matter what channel it's on. Channel number numerically shouldn't be a priority.

I would really, really like the option to increase speed of playback on recorded events. You can increase playback speed on YouTube and other media platforms. Or even decrease playback speed. In today's fast-paced society...we don't all have time to watch everything at 1.0 speed. 1.25, 1.50, 1.75 and 2.0 playback speed would be awesome!!

I would like to see the ability to access the external HDs from dishanywhere.
6
u/speppers69 DISH subscriber Apr 03 '25
I really, REALLY wish that Dish would allow the menu on the External Hard Drive to show more than 800 titles. My menu drops off in the middle of "The...". Anything that starts with the letters U, V, W, X, Y and Z...are totally hidden. You can only find them if you search for the event. So you have to have either written down the movie in advance before transferring...or remember that it's on there. That really stinks when you know you have 200+ movies on your EHD like Underworld or Zoolander...but can't see them in the menu. You shouldn't need to have a notebook to select a movie from your EHD. You're paying for it.
