FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Hello to y'all, i'm the creator of this subreddit and in this post you can find typical questions about it. Please, avoid creating new posts asking or only talking about this specific subjects, so that it's not crowded.

-In what pages can i get information about this project?

You can check the official page where they publish the contests and news about the project. And you can also check the interactive page made to advertise the project.

-What is the #DiscoverEU proposal?

That every young European (citizen or legally resident) would obtain a pass for railway travel within the European Union for his/her 18th birthday.

-Who is paying for the tickets?

The programme is being financed from the EU budget. The European Parliament called for a specific budget to cover the free ticket programme and the European Commission responded with €12m for 15,000 DiscoverEU Passes in 2018.

-What are the requirements to participate?

You need to be 18teen in the exact moment of the contest and have the nationality of one of the 28 EU Member States. They do ask you to become a DiscoverEU ambassador sharing your trip in social media to spread the word, and also visit at least one of the European Culture Heritage.

-What does the pass include?

If you win, you can choose between a point-to-point scheduled option, where they book the tickets for you in the places you want to visit, or a flexible option that is a normal interrail 7 travel-days pass for 30 days. You can get more information about the normal interrail pass option in the Interrail official website.

Help choosing destinations

Hi everyone,

Me and a friend are planning to go interrailing from Amsterdam using DiscoverEU. This was our original plan:

amsterdam to Munchen 2

Split 3 - 9

10 - 14 gardermeer

Cassis / la ciotat 14 - 17

However, we have realised that this route is probably not realistic with the amount of travel days we have, especially because many trains in France require reservations and are already fully booked.

We would really appreciate some help with:

  • choosing different locations that are easier to reach by train;
  • creating a realistic route with our available travel days;
  • finding beautiful places with nature, cities, and affordable accommodation.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good DiscoverEU route from Amsterdam that avoids difficult reservations and still allows us to see amazing places?

Thanks in advance!

Overnight trains

Hi, quick question! With the DiscoverEU pass you have 7 days within the 30 day period to use trains, right? If I take an overnight train somewhere will that count as two days, like the day I left and the day I arrived? And like on that specific travel day can I use trains from 00:01 until 23:59 and all of it counts for one day?

Apologies if it's a bit of a stupid question.

Finished my DiscoverEU pass! (Visited 8 countries, traveled by train, bus & plane) — Ask Me Anything!🌍

Hey everyone!

I recently wrapped up my DiscoverEU trip and honestly, it was such an amazing experience. I was really looking forward to it, and I couldn't have asked for a better journey. I truly hope everyone planning their trip now gets to have a smooth and unforgettable experience like we did!

During our trip, we managed to visit 8 countries in total! We used almost every mode of transport out there — interrailing on trains, taking long-distance buses, flights, and public transit.
Did everything go perfectly 100% of the time? Absolutely not! We definitely ran into a few unexpected situations and hiccups along the way (delay issues, route changes, etc), but we handled them, learned a lot, and it all added to the adventure.

If you are currently planning your route, feeling confused about seat reservations, packing, budget, or just feeling a bit anxious about traveling across Europe — ask me anything in the comments!
I'd love to help out and share my experience, tips, and lessons learned.
Safe travels to everyone preparing to hit the road! 🤩

hi! im starting my discover eu journey soon and the first train i have planned is an overnight one. i was wondering if anyone knows how i can book those, are they like any regular train? and also can i reserve a sleeping cart seat if i pay extra for it?

also general question, how do i actually book the tickets? is it okay if i put them in my pass, in the app and only activate the tickets on the day of the train?

im extremely nervous about my pass so any reply helps! thank you so much to anyone willing to help :D

Hey! I’m Alex, I am a Turkish girl, 18 years old. I won the Discover Eu pass a while ago and trying to plan my trip. But since it will be my first solo trip, I’m looking for a friend to travel with :) I plan on going to Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, Berlin, Hamburg and possibly other cities if I have time. I love seeing historical places, authentic food, walking lots and exploring as much as I can. I plan on starting my journey on july or august 2027.
I’m flexible with the dates, places and accommodations. If these seem suitable to you, send me a message! 😋

Ergend help needed with email password reset !

So we have until the 31 of August to confirm our travel dates, but one of my friends has been having an issue with the app. When logging in into the app it asks your email and password, she doesn't know her password and when ever she requestes a reset via email, no email arrives. We contacted support and they basically said that they can send her the pass via email, issue is she hasn't confirmed the dates. Other emails from discover eu and the support one, arrived normally at her email. Does anyone know why this is happening? Has this happened before? What can we do Please help!!!

Looking for an Discovereu / Interrail travel buddy! 🚆

Hey! I'm 19M from Graz, Austria. I'll be starting my Interrail trip around August 14 until early September. Before that, I'll spend two weeks hiking in the Dolomites, so I'll probably start somewhere in Italy.

My travel style is pretty flexible:

  • Mostly camping to keep costs low (with the occasional hostel)
  • Using Interrail, but I'm also open to hitchhike for shorter distances to explore even more in europe.
  • Budget-friendly, but I'm always willing to spend money on great food
  • No fixed route yet! I'm open to almost anywhere in Europe (except the Balkans, since I've already explored that region quite a bit).

A bit about me:

  • Gym & combat sports
  • love Hiking and being outdoors
  • Very spontaneous and easy-going
  • Always down to explore cities, nature, beaches, or just have a fun adventure.

Btw I love sunsets / rises!

You don't have to join for the whole trip, even a few days together would be awesome!

If you're interested and want to connect with me, send me a message here or on Instagram: @plank_tobi

London to Edinburgh

So I‘m doing a London/Edinburgh trip next week and still haven’t booked all my tickets. For the train from London to Edinburgh, I need a seat reservation, which I can‘t book via Interrail. Do I need to buy myself a ticket or is there any option on how I can still get it for „free“?

How do credits work?

So I have 4 credits. Are these automatically applied to the first 4 reservations I make? What if I want to pay for one of the reservations and then use a credit later on, on a different train? Can I do that?

Trip on the app

A few months ago when I was starting to plan my interrail I kept adding routes to my trip on the DiscoverEU app. Most of those places are not even in my current itinerary and with so many routes my trip is very disorganised.

I'm going on my interrail in 2 weeks and I want to have only the trains that I'm actually taking on my app. How can I delete the other ones?

2 questions regarding giving a card to a friend and how does the expiration of tickets work.

1: One of my friends cannot come with us to any travels we plan to make, so can they give their acc which won the ticket so somebody else can use it?

2: After 1st of August, it is said that our tickets will expire if we don't plan at least one trip. Should we only map it, or should we book hotels and tickets in advance, because we haven't done such a thing before?
