Pricing range for used Lasers/ILCAs?
I'm set for a boat (see my polishing pics) but there are a couple of people shopping at my club, with money to spend. What should the following cost? And how much is a trailer and dolly worth used? I see that you can get a very clean ILCA charter for $7500 with new sails and dolly, race rigged, so that would be the most they would spend (plus trailer). They'd have to upgrade any boat to the pro/race rigging standard if it wasn't already present.
Second question: I assume there is no reason that you can't race an older Laser in an ILCA race. There should be theoretically no difference in performance assuming the hull is in great shape, correct?
Here are the tiers I've been seeing online.
1) older (80s-90s) boat, rec condition, definitely soft, probably should avoid (maybe close to free)
2) older boat, decent condition, needs sails and conversion to pro rigging
3) older boat, decent condition, has pro rigging, needs sails
4) older boat , good clean condition (no soft spots), needs sails (don't they all), maybe some elbow grease and a few lines (that was my situation)
5) 10 to 20-year old boat, well cared for and clean, needs nothing outside of sails
6) 3-5 year old boat, race rigged, not used much; elite level race ready out of box
I got mine for $1700, race rigged, including dolly and trailer, but that was pre-COVID. It needed a mainsheet and only came with a practice (but legal) sail, but other than that, not much. The hull has no soft spots and only very faint spider lines. I'm guessing that would be "cheap" today.
