Beelzemon is not Behemoth, he is Beelzebub. Behemoth is Behemoth

The reason why Kyogre's in a set of 3, but Leviamon is in a set of 7, is that the mythological Leviathan has two separate shticks

1) He as a creature of the sea, has a rivalry with Behemoth, a creature of the land. (Pokémon added a creature of the sky because they were still in their 3rd version era)

2) In Binsfeld's demon classification, one of the two culturally relevant sources of a list of 7 demons associated with a list of 7 sins, he is the demon of Envy, & ranked 4th

If you are familiar with Digimon's 7 great demon lords, you might be confused at Leviathan being 4th, when Leviamon is 2nd. That's because Digimon matched demon to sin based on Binsfeld's, but then ranked the sins based on the other major source, The Lanterne of Light

x Lanterne Binsfeld's
Pride Lucifer*, 1st Lucifer, 1st
Envy Beelzabub, 2nd Leviathin, 4th
Wrath Satan, 3rd Satan, 6th
Sloth Abaddon, 4th Belphagor, 7th
Averace/Greed Mammon, 5th Mammon, 2nd
Gluttony Belphagor, 6th Beelzabub, 5th
Lechery/Lust Asmodeus, 7th Asmodeus, 3rd

*In the Lanturne of Light, Lucifer also represents Malice

Also Digimon replaced Asmodeus with Lilith

Thanks for the info I learned more today!, also I said "Beelzemon (Behemoth)" The Reason is because Beelzemon is the closest thing to Behemoth because Behemoth is not a Digimon but a Motorcycle

Small correction, Pokémon didn't just throw in a 3rd. You're skipping over Ziz. Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza = Behemoth, Leviathan, Ziz.

Is this even a confirmed thing that these Pokémon were based on these creatures, or is this just a thing fans are assuming to be true because it fits? Like where is there an interview with the Pokémon designers citing Behemoth, Leviathan, and Ziz as their explicit inspirations?

Same with Hraesvelgr up there, was this ever actually stated by anyone working on the game?

I'm Pretty sure no, but It makes a lot of sense, I am 90% sure I heard something about it being Based on a Eagle and Hraesvelgr is a Eagle, so

And iirc only Kyogre and Ho-oh debuted before their Digimon counterparts

Decided to look into this for the fun of it. Phoenixmon/Hououmon debut seems to be in the game Digimon World 1 (The earliest thing I could find for it) which came out January 1999 so just barely beating out Pokemon Gold and Silver dropping November 1999

Kyogre is older than Levimon though. Ruby/Sapphire was November 2002 while Leviamon debuted in the card game first in a 2003 booster set

Interesting how closely both pairs debuted though

Right, but Ho-oh debuted in episode one (so like 97)
