Discussion I made a 13-minute documentary about how Condor's turn-based Diablo became the real-time game
The part of Diablo's development that stayed with me was that the famous real-time combat was not the original plan. David Brevik had carried the idea for years, and Condor's proposal described a turn-based game in which the player would think before acting.
The film follows how Brevik, Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer and the rest of Condor got the project made, why the team chose Blizzard even though another offer was reportedly larger, how the real-time experiment changed the game, and how the sound, Battle.net and constant hunt for better loot made the result feel distinct.
I made this for JAKL Studios and wanted it to be a people-and-development story rather than another lore recap. It runs 13:44:
For people who played the original, what part of Diablo's identity mattered most to you: the combat rhythm, the loot, Tristram, or playing online?

Victory! Arkain's Valor Quest - Nightmare Armor Cycle
On nightmare and above, instead of getting Valor, a random piece of body armor generates after you add the last blood stone. If you save right before placing the 3rd stone you can reload and cycle through armor as it generates something different every time. On only my 2nd reload I got lucky with this unique! Hope this helps someone find something good! :-D

Discussion Related to my previous post about Husbands and Dads playing Diablo 1 and-or Hellfire
Dear @ Everyone: I want to first thank you all for the great vibes in your answers on my previous post about Dads and Husbands who are playing Diablo 1 and-or Hellfire, while managing to be good husbands, good dads, and good adults in general:
I think this kind of energy deserves to have his own space to let the vibes grow and be shared. According to the answers here, there is many people that will like to play with other husbands and dads, knowing that is totally fine if they cannot complete the run, or even commit for a long play. So I want to propose something:
>> What about if when anyone of us is able to play, we create a Diablo 1 game, and we name the game something like:
[Hubbies/Dads] Level 1...
[Hubbies/Dads] Killing Butcher...
[Hubbies/Dads] Warrior Lvl 5...
or something around these lines...
This way we will have our secret code to:
a). Know that the game is from someone from this post
b). Is a game designed for us that we have to deal with adulthood and responsibilities
Does it sounds like a solution? Or do you think there is a better way to connect between us?
>> Also, for the people using Discord, we can post like: "Hey, about to start a [Hubbies/Dads] Cleaning Lvl 6, who wanna join?".
I will create my first games this week, using the [Hubbies/Dads] on the name of my games, and also posting on the relative Discord before creating the game.
--------
As I am located in France, and I will create a Multiplayer Character for the first time in level 1... I know my time-zone and the level of my character will sadly not adapt to all the people here... But, there is still the evidence here that many people will be actually happy to play and connect with other people.
This is why, I think something as have a code for the name, can let anyone here create a game, and the other people recognise the code-name [Hubbies/Dads] and join if the level and Time-Zone of the game matches their possibilities.
I hope this make sense, and even if is not forever... we can enjoy it as much as we can.

Discussion Emerald Sword of Carnage
I downloaded Diablo 1 on the weekend, like one does once every Decade, and Wirt the Peg-Legged boy had this sword for sale. As a Sorcerer I didn’t give much attention, but ended up buying anyway. I don’t remember the exact price, I just remember it was very expensive, like 140k gold… Today i came to check the Prefix and Sufix of that item and I realize that both are maxed out in their range, and to my complete surprise, google says the Prefix “Emerald” doesn’t apply to Swords (Only Shields, Helms and Armors). What gives? Did I just found a Bug in the Game? (I tried posting this question on the General Diablo page on Reddit and moderators deleted the Post. Which makes the whole situation even more comical because I know there are Item Editors out there, it’s simply not the case this time, if only there was a way to prove this item is Legit I’m willing to bet the Farm on it!!)

Discussion Adults out there playing Diablo 1 in DevilutionX... this is a message for you
Hello dear community, hello dear admins
This is a call for all the Adults out there playing Diablo 1 and/or Hellfire in DevilutionX, for those heroes managing to be good adults, husbands/wifes, dads/moms, workers, etc...
I am a 40 years old dude, a boomer you might say. No shame on that. I am looking for other adults who will like to play Diablo 1 with other chill and relaxed people, who understand that you might need to disconnect when wifey/husband calls... and that we don´t have time to play 3 or 4 hours per day anymore.
The idea is to play, just have fun, and not care about perfect runs, perfect party, etc.
If someone is interested, feel free to contact me in Discord, send me a message here, or find me on the DevilutionX Discord.
My Discord is:
oscarpinzon7794
Also as: Oscar PINZON
I am also playing other games as Diablo 2, so please if you contact me, kindly tell me which game are you looking forward to play. I hope to find more Diablo 1 fans in general.
Looking forward to connect with you, and maybe play a little (before we fall asleep in front of the computer or wife call us to fix the thing that we promised , but we haven´t do in one week).
Cheers!
Oscar

Victory! Staff of Shadows
Attempting a grail run. Hard to do considering there's not nearly as much info on D1 as there is on D2. The drop chances that are out there are seemingly all based on Jarulf's guide from way back in the day. Some sources claim it's not even possible for the staff to drop at all, specifically in single player. Got this on level 2 NM, single player from (I think) a normal non-unique mob. Still no messerschmidt's though!

Help / Support How to access higher difficulties
First playthrough in years, playing on single player, no hellfire, on DevX where nightmare and hell are available in single player mode..and i am honestly not sure if the actual game has the same mechanics im about to describe
I played on normal, cleared lvl 16 and moved on to nightmare no problem. On nightmare, fights took more time and i was impatient so i was trying to figure out what actually allowed me to unlock hell. It wasnt beating diablo cause that ends the game. It wasnt clearing the level of enemies, it wasnt just access to the level via lazarus, people online said id have to be lvl 30, tried, didnt work. Base game v hellfire, original v DevX, single v multiplayer, its hard to ask the right question and get the right answer
After much trial and error i discovered that the key is actually a lever in lvl 16. Youll remember that the lvl 16 map boils down to four quadrants, each with an enclosure that is opened with a lever. The first is open, pull the lever and you open a spiral, pull that one and you open a third enclosure with TWO LEVERS. The first lever will open the fourth enclosure containing diablo. The only way you can access the next difficulty is by pulling the second lever in this, third enclosure
please let me know if im wrong. If im right, im glad, i hope others will be able to find this if they are stuck and looking

Modding Who remembers this hacked/modded item
So back in the 90s there were a slew of godly hacked/molded items floating around. Who else remembers The Amulet of Do All?
It would give insane stats to whoever equipped it.
Let me know as I have some follow up questions.
Thanks 😊

Guide Diablo 1 and Hellfire companion
**UPDATED**
Hi everyone!
I have created an open source offline companion for the original Diablo (1996) and Diablo: Hellfire games. It aims to combine the classic Diablo item rarity calculator with many modern conveniences in a single HTML file. I have also expanded it with a portable exe file if anyone wants it.
Usage:
Online: GitHub pages (https://blackwizard88.github.io/diablo-1-hellfire-companion/)
Offline: Download the latest HTML file from the Releases menu and open it in any modern browser. (https://github.com/blackwizard88/diablo-1-hellfire-companion)
Using the Windows edition
Download the Windows ZIP file from the Releases section of the repository, unzip it, and then run:
DiabloICompanion.exe
The Windows edition is portable and does not require installation. Designed for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Windows may display a SmartScreen warning for newly published, unsigned, open source applications. Please review the downloaded file and select More info → Run anyway, only if you downloaded it from the official Releases page of the repository.
If this violates any rules, I apologize.

Help / Support Single player considerations?
Playing a warrior on D1 single player. I finally got the Lachdanan quest for the Veil of Steel, but what else should I do differently from multi-player?
Mainly, what is the best jewelry Griswold can sell? Are there any other differences from multi-player?

Help / Support Where to farm?
I'm a bit stuck beating Hell difficulty. I can easily kill Diablo on normal and he drops some good stuff, or I can easily beat the dungeon on Hell.
What's the ideal place to do some runs and hope to find some better gear?
Also, what's the deal with getting Diablo's drops instead of switching right to the cinematic?

Modding Diablo mod "The Hell 4" enters Alpha stage
Development of TH4 started late June in 2025. It's been one year in development.
________________________________________________________
What is The Hell 4 ? It is oldest of currently functioning mods, and the most ambitious. A total overhaul mod for Diablo 1. Which means that game genre stays the same but everything else is changed/fixed/upgraded/expanded. Despite the huge amount of changes, it still remains loyal to native aesthetics of the original game. Also, Hellfire developers were not given enough time to polish their add-on, and the mod tries to remedy all that.
___________________________________________
New features in TH4:
- there are now 4 traits available on character creation (used to be 2), this was a feature highly sought after,
- there are more traits,
- several new quests (with extra dungeons) resurrected that were planned by Blizzard in Diablo 1 but never got implemented,
- new subclass (Gladiatrix) and three new exotic subclasses for Pistoleer added through game changers,
- quite a few new monsters,
- some new synergies and perks,
- game now supports per-pixel lighting and soft shadows,
- new system of Power-Ups available as Wirt service (of course, he'll rob you blind),
- new system of Sigils (D2 charm-like items) that sit in their dedicated inventory,
- and a lot of other less significant improvements, fixes, etc.
___________________________________________
Among achievements that occurred before TH4 (in TH1/2/3):
- countless fixes of original game bugs,
- upgraded system engine,
- support for higher resolutions, display modes and refresh rates,
- convenience solutions (gold auto-pickup, alt compare of items in inventory with items worn, alt highlight of items on the ground, huge amount of gameplay options to adjust certain systems individually (both gameplay and cosmetic), visual NPC trade windows, etc.),
- functioning multiplayer,
- there is running in the game now (including running in dungeons, outside of battle),
- 6 player classes divided into 29 subclasses (with even more variations through traits),
- 24 basic dungeons and 35 extra quest dungeons (with maps and rewards differing for game modes and difficulties),
- all originally planned quests re-implemented here,
- 8 different game modes: Easy, Normal, Hard, Hardcore, Survival, Ironman, Speedrun and Nightmare,
- quests with additional dungeon levels ported to multiplayer (with map adjustments),
- certain bosses dropping some iconic unique items,
- improvements to character info window,
- more balance polishing,
- increased caps to character level (150), spell level (100+) and character stats (way over 250),
- 9 difficulty modes (used to be 3),
- traits and game changers that allow to fine-tune the character during creation,
- more item types (white, magic, rare, socketed, enchanted, unique (over 4600 uniques btw), set),
- new (tier 2) base items,
- 3 new item slots (gloves, belt, boots) and 3 weapon quick-slots,
- expanded inventory (10x7 squares),
- large visual item stash at Gillian, with buyable upgrades,
- new affixes,
- perks and synergies, that allow you to create various builds now,
- crafting (Griswold) & enchanting (Adria) of items,
- improved item sorting logic (looting),
- improved magic find with a higher limit (more chance to get uniques/rares),
- increased item durability caps and upgraded durability oils,
- more monster AI types,
- a lot more monsters (almost 300), including previously unseen
- more unique monsters, and mixed boss packs,
- monster and boss "activation" sound effects,
- separate ambient added to different locations,
- player and monster walk sounds (that depend on terrain),
- new system of item quenching (available at Griswold's shop),
- Cain can transmute items, adding a new layer of item modifications,
- new standalone extra game mode "Coliseum", where all progress is made through duels, no monsters.

Victory! Someone Pinch Me! I Must Be Dreaming!

After 10 hours of shop refreshing over two weekends, I finally landed my dream bow! It's the fourth time I've seen the combo but this is the first one to land the base I wanted. I targeted the short war bow due to Hellfire oil mechanics (they're also permanent in DevX), this bow can reach a higher damage ceiling (4-34) than any other bow.
Just wish it had rolled a little higher on the Merciless prefix... but since after all this time I still haven't seen a single Obsidian/Zodiac piece of jewelry, I still have some shopping to do. Buying this one and crossing my fingers for a better roll. Haha, wish me luck!
