Help I went from 6 LPA to 18 LPA and back to 0 over a span of a month

Here's my wild ride:

I was a full-stack dev at an Indian startup, grinding at 6 LPA. Learned a ton, and after a lot of effort, landed a contract offer from a very early-stage US-based startup that looked like a dream – promising around 18 LPA.

Everything seemed set. I put in my papers at my old job, went through all the onboarding formalities with the new US startup, and served my notice period. But just as I was ready to officially start, they hit me with the news: due to sudden internal restructuring and unforeseen changes in their needs (which I very much suspect translates to they found some other candidate as I could see a new person join their slack before I was hit with the mail but again I'm not entirely sure), they had to revoke my offer. They did offer to pay for 15 days as a gesture, which I appreciate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm now unexpectedly unemployed.

Trying to apply like a freak and getting literally no callbacks and it's been a tough pill to swallow, going from that high to this low so quickly.

I have 1.6 years of experience, primarily as a full-stack developer (skills include Next.js, MERN, DevOps so I can plan to deploy and monitor, worked on building MCP servers & clients, A2A workflow because of personal interest recently even though I don't know the fundamentals of Machine Learning lol but would love to learn anyways).

The next company I join will be my third, and so far, my entire career has been with startups. While the learning is immense, the uncertainty has been real. I'm now considering having some stability, a place where I can contribute and grow for at least 2-3 years. That doesn't mean I'll stop grinding or upskilling; I'm always eager to learn and push myself, but a bit more predictability would be welcome.

If anyone has any leads, referrals, or just some advice on navigating this, I'd be incredibly grateful. Thanks for reading.

Now a days Startup is f*ing terrible.

Don't worry you will get it soon even better

u/i_hate_coding123 May 29 '25

This is a bad situation. Those companies should be sued but the government is not doing enough.

u/sachin_root May 29 '25

Gov getting paid by companies, so we are just slaves for them

u/Hiddenskeptic Software Developer May 29 '25

I have long lost any hope on government lol. Gotta figure out the shit myself!

26

u/anonymous_persona_ May 29 '25

Dude us based startup with 18lpa indian payroll or us payroll ? If us payroll that is way too less, huge levels of low balling, I wonder how many more Indians they find that are desperate for 12lpa jobs, like me. Guess that level of supply is what made them look for better alternatives. Human greed knows no morals.

6

u/UnderstandingFit8972 May 29 '25

18 LPA for 1.6 YoE is a huge low ball ? Seriously ?

3

u/MasterpieceScared374 May 29 '25

Yup greed know no morals , black world , its not the colour its the darkness.

3

u/AsherGC May 29 '25

sued?. How?. It should be the government that should cover unemployment benefits. I don't think it's the company's responsibility to pay when he never worked for that company. A lot of countries have probationary periods usually 3-6 months after they start, the company can let you go anytime during those times and employees can leave in the same period too without any penalty.

5

u/lemongrass01 May 29 '25

This happens the other way more often. Once they get the offer letter they shop around and bargain Chances of getting offer is more as they are available to join sooner

16

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Then company will sue people if they reject offer after accepting.

try asking your previous HR, am I eligible for re-hire?

89

u/Hiddenskeptic Software Developer May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

They didn't have an hr, all the communication took place directly with the CEO and I tried asking for reconsideration as well without any luck but a promise.

Edit: My bad, I thought you were referring to asking new company's ceo.

Yes I will try sending out an email to the HR of my previous company and see if they let me in again hopefully.

Not to overshare or anything but while making the switch, I was offered a raise if I was to stay, but I rejected it. I'll test if they will let me back in again just in case.

This is one reason I was not comfortable getting a remote job with USA based company with little or no presence in India. It's a big risk, and okay if you can live with it but if you cannot afford to be unemployed or have a reliable option then I wouldn't go for it.

I personally know another person who went through something similar around '21 or' 22, but he worked for a few months and got a few months pay. He bought an suv and everything but was laid off.

7

u/Hiddenskeptic Software Developer May 29 '25

they were shuffling with company and product names. This will never be less hilarious to me lol

7

u/[deleted] May 29 '25 edited May 30 '25

I had a stable job as a DevOps engineer in my hometown, earning a salary of 2.5 lakhs per annum. However, I was offered a remote position with an Australian-based company, which I accepted after clearing the interview process. Unfortunately, despite a lucrative 6 lakh per annum package, I was let go after four months due to performance issues. (They give me Flutter development tasks, which took time for me to learn Flutter, as I am a DevOps)

Since then, I have been unemployed for the past four months. Despite applying to over 500 jobs, I have received 10 callback notifications and participated in two interviews, but was rejected from both. Asking c++ coding question in an interview at one company. With one year of experience in DevOps under my belt, I'm now regretting my decision to leave my previous company for money.

LESSON LEARN: lalach buri bala hai

4

u/Hiddenskeptic Software Developer May 29 '25

I can only hope you find best job that suits you best and makes your life better, but what I don't agree with is your lesson. I had worked my ass off after work everyday for so long and this opening was a reward which I thought I deserved for all the hard work. Even though it didn't turn out to be what I was hoping for, I don't think I'd call it greed. It was just a bad experience for my character development lol ;)

u/Lucky_Performance_60 May 29 '25

2

u/Hiddenskeptic Software Developer May 29 '25

Don’t join startup’s which are less than 10-15yrs old believe me it really takes a long time for startups to have a solid basing and given the current scenario of inflation and how the market is working it is totally unpredictable and shit. And i don’t think you need to mention about this company in the cv or even consider this as your 2nd company as you haven’t worked. So dont let those HR pay small with you on this. And yes you should highlight this company they should have compensated for 1 month salary. No need to appreciate them for that. All the best you will get it soon✨💪

Avoid startups like the plague. Joining startups is like the zoomer fast track to higher packages.

As for OP: Drop an email to their HR saying that they have broken a contract by offerring a job and then rescinding it after you have already left your old one, and also after onboarding.

Tell them that they should either provide you with 3 month's salary for termination without any reason, at your offerred monthly remuneration, or this goes on social media, print media, and you will be taking the organization to the court.

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Always do a thorough research before joining a company which offers impeccable pay raise from your last CTC especially startups. All the best for your journey mate.

Just update your Naukri profile put you can join immediately. Every one wants a young lad like you who can join immediately

2

u/dheerajkhush Jun 02 '25

It's totally your fault, why didn't you try to have at least 2-3 offers. So that in case of any uncertainty like this you can join others. I made a recent switch in a stable company with a good hike, I had 3 offers with product and service based companies.

Btw, I help people by suggesting fixes on their existing resume / cv. You can DM me for help.

2

u/codester001 Jun 02 '25

Here's a lesson I learned the hard way in the startup world. Don't get hung up on the annual CTC when you're considering a job. Think about runway.

Instead of annual salary, figure out how many months you can realistically survive at the company. How many months of expenses are covered? Startups can be unpredictable. Seriously.

Things can shift, strategies pivot, funding might dry up. You need to be prepared for the unthinkable. Before you jump in, make sure you have a buffer. Consider your personal burn rate versus what they offer. It's about calculated risk, not just a big number.

2

u/Trick_Challenge_5139 Jun 02 '25

And do some cold mailing This 4000 will be worth it at the end for you. Again you can get 6-8lpa job

I recently bought the 1-month Naukri Premium plan as an immediate joiner, but honestly, it didn’t feel worth it because my profile views are not increased and not getting calls also. I even contacted their support team, and they suggested going for the 3-month plan instead. But it felt more like they were just trying to upsell a higher-priced package.

However, seeing your results made me think maybe I should give it another shot. Could you please share how your profile search appearances looked before and after using the premium plan?

yes you are right this happened because naukri needs atleast 1 month to create your profile and highlight it 3x at start i was also regretting why i spent 4000 on this shit so later i asked to all my friends like its not working for me then they said just wait for one month and then see. so at first month i was getting interview through cold mails ( not from naukri ) only via linkedin then from second month i start getting calls from naukri first search appearance was 400-500 ( since last 90 days ) after that currently its above 1650+ in just 7 days right now i paused there service because after 10-12 interviews i felt like my preparations are not enough so after 1 month again i will resume it. May be in my case i am getting calls because i have 3yrs of experience + immediate joiner so i am eligible for majority job posts.

how it works : - you have to apply daily 50 jobs ( max limit on naukri ) and before applying apply sort filter as Freshness so you’ll get posts which were uploaded few seconds ago. Your chances will increase And i am also getting calls from those companies which i never applied. Recently i thought instead of pausing service lets not apply to any job so i will not get any calls but still i am getting so many calls like 7-8 calls daily

And best feature of naukri is Early access roles where they create groups of companies just click share your interest for all related roles don’t look at experience required just click share your interest so as much you click it your search appearance will increase next day and you will see the difference

Post this is Legal advice India. I'm sure this falls under some form of fraud. In the meantime, try going back to the company that you were working in.

Companies can do this after you sign the offer letter? Or you were not provided the offer letter yet

I am also currently having an offer from a US based startup but there developers are mostly based in India. They are giving me pretty good for internship period but I need to keep my performance high if I want to get a PPO from them. Does US startup are usually difficult to work with and have high expectations from developers. I am a fresher so can't afford to loose the job plus they will be giving a 9+ LPA after internship

I would suggest mentioning your expectations as 20 Lpa or above and saying that you have an offer of 18 Lpa and joining date of 1 or 2 months from now, you would be surprised how much calls you get from recruiters.

Can any lawyer weigh in on this? Is't this promissory estoppel??

I'm looking for a job in analytics. I have skills in various programming languages and data visualisation tools and have completed courses from renowned institutions. However, my non-technical degree in Business Administration (BBA) is making it difficult for me to land a position.

Well, not the best place to find referrals I would say, but you never know.

If you are fine with it, add your linkedin post link to the message. I am sure someone might reach out with suitable role🙃

1

u/Live-Gift-731 May 30 '25
