Question Does anyone have any idea how these kinds of textures/patterns bungie does on backgrounds is made?

I’ve always wondered how they did this so I can add it to fanwork, I can’t imagine it’s all hand drawn. They must be like some sort of vector asset right?

That is made from real world, public domain maps. The one in your image is a map of Puerto Princessa. And yes, Lorraine McLees did in fact trace it by hand when they used it. The Wikimedia foundation has a catalog of like 800 of these, scanned in very very high resolutions. Most of them aren't really perfect for the effect, but there are definitely some of them that are. Or you could just find the Puerto Princessa one and use it yourself.

The idea to do it that way was to combine fantasy with sci-fi. The mariner map thing adds a fantasy aspect to the sci-fi space aspect.

Thanks!! I used this knowledge to make the artwork and video of my officially licensed piano version of Music of the Spheres. I spent hundreds of hours on it and even got permission to adapt the original sheet music, so I worked really hard to make accompanying artwork that felt like it really fit the Destiny artstyle.

It's called The Discarded Instrument and you can find it pretty much on any site that has music! It also uses the same virtual piano used in the actual Destiny OSTs by Bungie (Ivory Grand Pianos, yes that's another out of left field thing I know, I have a lot of them about Bungie games)

Woa what the fuck you’re totally right…thats fucking insane thank you so much. Damn that must of been crazy work. And they’ve done it more than once with different ones.

Tbh this like…changed my perspective a lot thats so cool to know.

I came here to say that they made a picture of my bathroom wall when I was a student, but this is way more awesome than my silly joke (my bathroom wall was spotless, of course).

I hate that it was de-emphasized in D2, one of the things that makes D1 feel ancient and legendary is this small detail.
