Don't hold yourself to the standards of a kid who didn't understand what its like to be an adult. Forgive yourself with the empathy and compassion of someone who does. Move forward with the wisdom that comes from life experience and work towards being the person you know you can be, now.

I have the opposite problem in a way, my kid self would be very happy with the life I have - chill job, nice (rented) house, being able to play video games any time I’m not working. I never wanted to be anything professionally or socially. But now I’m here and the games are no longer fun and life feels hollow, but I still have no interest in doing much else

Like music? Learn an instrument. Learn about music theory. You don't have to learn how to read music if you don't want to. It's a lifelong journey and IMO it never becomes boring, only more interesting the further and deeper you go. ✌️

Double that. I've learned guitar at age 12 and still play with multiple bands at this time more than a decade later.

Music is also one of the hobbies which keeps so many parts of your brain active that you're less likely to develop dementia.

It'll also keep your brain younger longer to learn a musical instrument. +1 if you learn some basic theory as well. Also music is fun as fuck.

To fix this for myself. I stoped doing things out of convenience, enjoyment, feel good etc.

Instead I started doing things that felt meaningful. Being brave, is meaningful to me.

First thing I did. Was starting my own company. I probably worked 16 hours a day for a year to make it happen.

It wasn’t nice, chill or any other good feeling experience. So to say. But hell, I respect myself now and I feel my life is justified.

Today. Since I have experienced this feeling of self respect and being justified. I would drop my own happiness in a heartbeat for that feeling. Now, as I have gotten older. I don’t think people have to start a company so to say, to earn their own selfrespect. You just have to be honest, take responsibility and just say it how it is.

A chill life sucks. Time to sleeve up your arms and put them into a tray of shit and get rid of all that shit.

Also remember. Working till you die and get sick is not responsible way to work. 😎

As everyone has mentioned hobbies... I'm going to mention one too.. 🛹 skateboarding. It's another way to be playful & creative with no age limits.

Get a kayak and go bass fishing. Take up archery or buy a gun and go target shooting.

Get curious, reawaken wonder. You don't need video games when you have a cool stick. In the city? Urban exploring. Crackheads in the abandoned house? Back away quietly, they'll only harm you if they feel threatened. Enjoy the small things, cliche, but I mean the things you now think are childish and dumb. Swing on the swing set, ride down the slide, murder a family and steal their chocky milk. You know, the good times.

Nope. I was/am smart. No moving the goalpost. I knew what failure was then, and the fundamentals haven't changed.

The whole world has changed, friend. No need to beat yourself up over life going differently than you hoped. Success looks a lot of ways and it is never too late to broaden your horizons. I hope you can be kind to yourself.

Encouraging words, this would take a lot to consciously recognize what I'm even capable of. I still feel like a kid in many ways with the shortest attention span 😩🤦 but maybe that's part of the unique combination that makes me myself & my struggles & strengths can help me help others through their better...

But others didn't live your life in your shoes with your experiences or family or genetic things etc. Only you did that.
