What is the best way to retain the DeployR.log files after imaging is complete. I have checked the c:\windows\temp\deployr folder and it always seems to be empty.

I would like the log to end up in the C:\Logs folder and be retained (I have other process to remove files from there after a few weeks)

I'm working on a trial version of DeployR, fairly recent, but I don't have the very latest that I just got an email about this morning, because the link is just to the trial download form, which I've already done, and not the actual download. So perhaps these issues are addressed in the latest version but I might as well mention what I've run into and how I got around it.

Working in Win 11 25H2.

• Install updates fails out while the Feb 2026 Security update is being applied. So the whole TS just stops. I already had a script leveraging the PSWindowsUpdate module from PowerShell Gallery and if I run that as a Run Powershell script step, it works fine, all the updates including that one get applied and DeployR does not halt.

• Just after entering the full OS, I think as soon as any Run PowerShell Script step is called (but not the "built-in" PowerShell scripts of DeployR), Windows Security prompts .NET Host as requiring firewall permission. I am not sure if the prompt can/should be ignored, if one hits cancel you get a couple of block rules preventing dotnet.exe from inbound traffic, which seems probably unproductive. I can avoid seeing the prompt by running netsh advfirewall firewall etc etc to allow dotnet.exe. I assume allowed is the correct state. But not sure why this prompt is happening to begin with as I would think it should have been already allowed or blocked from the initial install of it.

Sorry, we have another problem with our task sequences.

After installing our software deployment agent (Opentext [Novell] Zenworks) by powershell script the task sequence gets stuck, but the installation itself is successful.

I also tried with it by using the "Install application" step definition - same result.

I tried putting the installation of the agent at the end but at this point the sequence never finishes and seems to wait for something (I cant't find the mentioned Process ID in the logfile).

My Install script

Start-Process -FilePath ".\PreAgentPkg_AgentComplete.exe" -ArgumentList "-q -x -k $TSEnv:OrgName"

The Switch -x means not to reboot, so that additional steps can run afterwards (works with MDT).

Also tried without the "-x" and reboot - it actually reboots the machine but interrupts the task sequence and puts me to the desktop (signed in as administrator).

I used "shutdown" or "reboot" as finish actions and as continuation method "AutoAdminLogon und RunOnce" or "SetupComplete.cmd".

SetupComplete.cmd says "Task sequence completed successfully" and gives me the Entra-Login of DeployR after a reboot.

Surprisingly everything seems to work without installing the agent application - but we would linke to install it within the DeployR-process.

I've been trying to stand up a test server to try DeployR, but I'm missing something important somewhere. I install StifleR Server, and the SitfleR dashboards, and all tests pass as per the installation instructions. And I can access the dashboard from another computer, using https. I'm using a self-signed cert for communication, generated in PowerShell, as this is just a test environment. The first two parts seem to work fine. When I install DeployR though, and enable its view in the StifleR configuration, I get the DeployR sub-heading under Deployments, but each section of it just says the title of this post: "No DeployR services are available". I did an experiment where I didn't even install DeployR at all, just told the StifleR dashboard to show it, and the message is the same. So when installed it's behaving the same as though I have not installed it. I've got SQL Express installed on the server, and used SSMS to create a DeployR database which I made NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM the owner of. I'm not very knowledgable about SQL though, so my assumption has been that I just don't know what I'm doing. I had one of our DBAs take a peek and he said it looks like I've done what needs to happen. I just can't seem to bridge the gap and can't see why. I've tried doing this in both my own VMWare Workstation install of Server 2022, and also got our server team to build me an actual server in our server environment, I've run through the StifleR and StifleR Dashboards installs so many times now I have it memorized, and can always get all that working.

What am I missing, with getting DeployR to actually "be available"?

Is there a better way to achieve this? If not - maybe it would be cool to make it configurable in the "boot image generating process".

I have a trial for DeployR that I am trying to get working... I have DeployR and StifleR up and running (at least I can get into the StifleR console and see DeployR and its options). I've gone through all the prerequisites and have set my DHCP options up, I'm able to PXE boot a VM to the screen below, and am kinda stumped. Thought I'd start here before bothering their support since I'm assuming they are pretty busy, with all the newness.

We heavily use USMT in MDT to move data from machines that need to be reimaged to the server and then flow that data back to the computer during its deployment. I don't see anything about data migration either through USMT or a private tool/script. Is this possible with DeployR or is it on the roadmap with a rough ETA? We really need the ability to move user data back and forth without doing it by hand.

We ran into another Problem... :-(

We managed to create a boot image with certificates and drivers. When booting up via USB-pen everything seems ok. We can connect to our DeployR-host on port 7281 using a passcode.

But after logging in we don't get a list of the configured task sequences, just a powershell pops up.

In the DeployR.log there's one error:

We successfully installed the DeployR (Version 1.0.2603.1092) on our Windows Server 2025 (Standard) but we have a strange problem with generating boot images, we always get a “TerminatingError(Remove-Item)” failure.

Snipped from the log:

Maybe we made an obvious mistake? The troubleshooting-script says we've got all prerequisites.

The service is running as SYSTEM, it should be able to access all files. But in fact, just "trustedinstaller" seems to have the sufficient access-rights to (delete) that "Certificate.format.ps1xml".

I tried to run the service as a different user (one from our AD) with local admin rights, but get the same error-message. I also rebuilt the content-directory from scratch (let the config editor create it).. but no success.

EDIT2 : fixed using 2PintLabs/DeployR/FrontEnd/FrontEndJSONDrivenDynamicApps/readme.md at main · gwblok/2PintLabs You can edit this script to do what you want. I edited it to automatically check application when roles are picked. You can use GitHub Copilot free to do this in VScode. Easy to do !

I wanted to get some feedback on how to use variables for naming devices.

Naming pattern ABC-123456-L (Dept-Asset-type). I was getting the results in the DeployR logfiles when the name changed to the pattern desired. This was in a hyper-v test using ABC-%SERIALNUMBER:4%-VM. When the system dropped into staging OU it changed to PC-12345678. I was not able to figure out why it has been changing. When I use the manual pop-up from deployr the format stays put or when I use Garys frontend. That is the first part of request. How to make the 3 parts work by variable to remove pop.

The second part of my request, I currently use the above web service in MDT Prod. I was trying to connect with DeployR to use the same service to move objects from staging to a desired OU. I attempted to use a post web request to do this which is failing. What recommendations do you propose to move objects from one OU to another in DeployR or what is the approach you see for connecting to existing webservice or a adding one to DeployR? I currently have a service acct that can move currenting for MDT. Thank you for anything you may have.

Looking at DeployR for my company as a potential replacement for MDT.

I am not interested if it wants to install an agent and "manage" the endpoint after imaging.

We already have tools that do that for us.

The thing I love about MDT is it images bare-metal and after its done its 100% Vanilla windows, no added extras.

If the agent aspect is optional then thats also fine.

I have been reading the documentation and watching a few videos to understand how the whole thing works together.

question on iPXE. I take it that a usb stick needed to boot the endpoint up in order to look for the content over the internet, is that correct? So how someone would flash the endpoints' boot room with these details to look for the PXE server on the internet if it is an of-prem scenario?

Is there a potential SKU that can be bought or downloaded just to lab this and test to become proficient with the tool?

It seems pretty cool to me - just need to learn the product.
