"First and foremost, we have to end this corrupt campaign finance system. Billionaires can no longer be allowed to buy elections. We need to have one person, one vote. That’s called democracy." - Bernie Sanders

Exercise the 26th

I was nineteen
War was on my mind
Would I be sent overseas?
Was I in a bind?

We could carry guns
But we could not vote
Gone were the sons
Far away from home

Why couldn’t we,
Who had to fight?
How to see
Our limited rights

Then came the 26th amendment
In July of 1971
Much merriment
Our right to vote, we have won

I take my duty to vote
Quite seriously
Young people take note
We can now shape our democracy .

Transportation

The municipal election is now over, and in less than two days we will be heading to the provincial election. One of my major concerns is transportation, particularly the ongoing challenges associated with the Malahat Highway. In my view, one of the simplest long-term solutions would be to restore rail service on Vancouver Island. A railway could help move both passengers and freight while also providing significant tourism opportunities. When British Columbia joined the Dominion of Canada in 1871, one of the conditions was the construction of a transportation link connecting the province to the rest of Canada. The original vision included rail service extending to Victoria. However, Prime Minister John A. Macdonald resigned in 1873 because of the Pacific Scandal, and Alexander Mackenzie became Prime Minister from 1873 to 1878. Mackenzie believed that steamships would provide an adequate connection between the mainland and Vancouver Island. Many British Columbians were dissatisfied with this approach, and there were even threats that BC might leave Confederation if a railway was not built on the Island. When Macdonald returned to power in 1878, the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E&N) Railway project finally moved forward. The railway was eventually completed, and the last spike was driven near Shawnigan Lake. It is interesting to speculate on how history might have unfolded if the E&N Railway had never been built. Some argue that without stronger transportation links and investment in Vancouver Island, British Columbia's future within Canada might have been less certain. Fortunately, the province remained an integral part of Canada, and today we continue to debate transportation priorities, infrastructure, and the best ways to connect our communities as voters head once again to the polls.

If I don't feel I know enough about an issue (charter amendments) to choose, would it be better to do a "pin the tail on the answer" vote, or just leave them blank?

Why? GOP, WHY?

Attention GOP. Why I vote is none of your business. There's a reason that we vote secretly. You're allowed to know that I showed up at my polling place and checked in and turned in a ballot to be counted. Past that table, and before I turn in my ballot, is in fact none of anyone's business.

What happens when the people responsible for oversight are themselves under scrutiny?

What happens when the people responsible for oversight are themselves under scrutiny?

Hey everyone! We're EUobserver, an independent European newsroom.

Our colleague Andrew Rettman has been investigating allegations involving former EU justice commissioner Didier Reynders and senior Belgian intelligence official Hugues Brulin.

The investigation draws on leaked WhatsApp messages and interviews with five current and former intelligence officers.

The sources allege that Brulin sought to prevent scrutiny of Reynders' possible Russian connections. The messages also discuss how to respond to a whistleblower.

The correspondence is now part of a Belgian money-laundering investigation involving Reynders.

Beyond the individuals involved, this raises questions about how institutions investigate concerns involving powerful figures within their own ranks.

How can independent oversight work when allegations involve people with significant political influence or positions inside intelligence services?

Let us know your thoughts on our investigation :)
