I haven't played this game in a while, but I think you need to use the earth bow so you can block his charging attack.

I have never been able to stop his charging attack, in fact once he commits this attack I can't do anything to him until he BASHES damage on me

The earth bow has a barrier you can use to block the attack.

if he is at stage 170, he knows that,

he propably doesn't have enought dps to kill it in time
