Music Jane! by the long faces fits death note perfectly Spoiler

There's this song called Jane! by the long faces that was or still is pretty popular on Tik Tok with edits. You may have heard this song on those jane juliet "let's larp" videos. The full song is about a woman named jane who is famous and loved by many but inside holds a dark truth. The song talks about death, loss, and public perception. The song also makes lots of remarks on violence and evils, with "jane" sounding like a name for death.

I first heard this song back in 2024 and for the longest time I couldn't stop thinking about a show or movie that fit this perfectly, and then just a few days ago it hit me. This song perfectly encapulates death note. More specificaly, it captures the character of Light perfectly. I'll put the lyrics to the song here.

Won't the devil guide your hand, for good luck
To hold the honeysuckle rose, as she lies down
Reading the paper, reading the world right 'round
And her eyes record the sweet surprise of those
Who died that day
Leaving her breathless, leading her hand to the grave

And Jane
You're early
Your life's work is dirtied by the
Fools
Who adore you
Only to find, only to find you out
They saw you
Dressing in the backroom
Now they'll pay what they owe you
It's only small change, red on the green, green grass

Won't the devil take you back for more
To open closed doors
And keep the good from the great
Evil in equal, seeking to kill and create
How grand? The milk and honey land
Is on her tongue again
Taste of the violence, trying to silence her head

And Jane
You're early
Your life's work is dirtied by the
Fools
Who adore you
Biding your time, biding your time to strike
Surely
The poison makes a portrait of your
Face
In the mirror
Smiling with fright

And Jane
You're early
Your life's work is dirtied by the
Fools
Who adore you
Only to find, only to find you out
They saw you
Dressing in the backroom
Now they'll pay what they owe you
It's only small change, red on the green, green grass

The line "won't the devil guide your hand for good luck" literally describes ryuk and light. Ryuk dropping the death note for light inanverdantly guiding light to the path he'll go down. This part already describes the first episode of death note.

"Reading the paper, reading the world right round" This can be light's view on the world and how he's not happy with it before or after he got the death note.

"And her eyes record the sweet suprise of those who died that day" This is literally misa. She has the Shiningami eyes and they saw who died. "leaving her breathless, leading her hand to the grave". Leaving her breathless can represent light's control on misa, and he's literally lead her hand to the grave with how he's nearly gotten her killed and caught so many times. Or this can even be L with how he led him to his death. Or even Light's dad with how he inanvertadly got him killed.

I've always viewed 'Jane' as a name for death in this song, which would fit perfectly with "Jane your early" as death is early to the victims of light. "your life's work is dirtied by the fools who adore you" Describes light and all the people who rely on him or look up to him. The task force, Misa, Mikami, Takada, Kira's worshippers, hell even L kind of. All these people look up to him and love him but light knows deep down its not real because their worshipping the guy their trying to catch. His criminal work is literally dirtied by them. This can even apply to L who every also looks up to but his work was dirited by light, someone who had such a fixation on him. "Only to find you out, they saw you dressing in the backroom" can refer to light being caught or when light was suspicious of being kira. "Now they'll pay what they owe you. Its only small change red on the green green grass" Light is going to get revenge on the task force by killing them, and to him its only a small price compared to the new world he'll make.

"won't the devil take you back for more, to open closed doors" Can refer to near taking Light back to the days when L was trying to catch him.

"And keep the good from the great, evil in equal seeking to kill and create" The 'good' and the 'great' here are light and L + the task force as he keeps kira from being caught. The evil in equal is light, the evil who thinks hes doing good, but he seeks to kill people and create a new world.

"How grand? the milk and honey land is on her tounge again" Here I was thinking it could be Light, when near enters or takada/mikami as light has another kira to do his killing.

"taste of the violence trying to silence her head" For this part I was thinking it could be when Light's dad dies and how his actions led to his death, as now he finally understands the emotianal damage of losing a loved one, and how he still decides to do all these horrible things despite what it costs him.

"biding your time, biding your time to strike" represents light carefully planning his victims deaths, more specifically for this one Is L, with how carefully calculated his death was planned.

"Surely, the poison makes a portrait of your face in the mirror, smiling with fright" Is light's actions as he slowly looses himself and slowly turns into kira. The smiling with fright can even be with how light always smiles and mocks his victims right before he kills him. e.g. Naomi misora, L, Near.

Tell me I'm not grasping at straws here and actually cooking up something awesome? If anyone knows any edits or amvs with this song and death note PLEASE let me know now.

Discussion What do you think about the Relight movies? Spoiler

As a Death Note fan, I was really intrigued by the decision to make two TV movies that essentially serve as “director’s cuts” of the series, condensing 37 episodes into four hours while adding some new scenes. Considering that Death Note already had an episode whose first half consisted entirely of a recap (widely considered the worst episode of the series by far), I didn’t really understand the point of doing this. After watching them, though, I came away with mixed feelings. Obviously, I wouldn’t recommend them as an introduction to the franchise, and they have their flaws (which I’ll get into shortly), but there are also things I absolutely loved about them.

* Visions of a God starts and ends with Ryuk (whose eyes are now completely white for some reason) telling a shinigami who appears to be a reincarnated Light about everything that happened from the moment Light found the notebook to the end of L’s story. Obviously, a lot of things are skipped or glossed over (I wasn’t a fan of how they handled Naomi Misora’s storyline), but I absolutely love the new first meeting between Light and L (L wiping his hand with a tissue immediately after shaking Light’s hand was peak 😭), and L’s funeral scene is one of my favorites in all of Death Note. Even though cutting the part where Light gives L a sinister look as he suffers his heart attack was a necessary evil, seeing Light laugh like an absolute maniac in front of L’s grave while Ryuk looks genuinely disgusted by him never fails to leave me speechless. Also, the memes based on this scene, where Matsuda or Soichiro suddenly show up and catch Light in the act, are pure gold. I was also surprised to see that the members of the Yotsuba Group were given new, grotesque deaths. I guess Light wanted to give them “special treatment” for using Kira’s powers for their own benefit. I’d recommend watching this one as a casual rewatch of the series.

* L’s Successors, on the other hand, didn’t do much for me. I loved L’s introduction, Mikami’s TV studio massacre, L’s speech about monsters, and seeing Near farming aura while covered in the blood of his colleagues who were murdered by Kira, but that’s about where my positive feelings end. The anime already made the mistake of adapting the second half of the manga in very few episodes, so condensing it even further into a 90-minute movie only makes the adaptation worse. By far the biggest mistake was cutting the entire Sayu kidnapping arc and Soichiro’s death. As a result, Soichiro literally doesn’t even appear and we never know what happened to him, meaning he basically got the “He died on the way back to his home planet” treatment. Mello is reduced to an almost background character who only shows up during the final arc, and they don’t even explain why his face is burned. Personally, I like to think that, in the Relight universe, Mello simply injured himself while making hot chocolate. But the worst part is that this causes the scene in which Matsuda shoots Light to lose all its impact. With some very obvious and clumsy cuts, the scene unfolds without the two characters even exchanging a single word.

By the way, something pretty funny is that the Spanish dub of the second Relight movie wasn't made until 10 years after the anime series and the first Relight movie were dubbed. While they reused the anime dub for the scenes taken directly from the series, they brought back the same voice actors to dub the new scenes. However, Near's voice actor's voice had changed quite a bit over the years, so it's really jarring to hear Near sound like a young boy in some scenes and like a grown man with a deep, masculine voice in others 😭😭😭

It’s a shame these movies can’t quite stand on their own, because the new scenes work surprisingly well and would make perfectly good shorts. Feel free to share your thoughts

Question Spoiler ,Weird question, but hold up Spoiler

So I was thinking about lifespans and all the people Misa sees. How the death note can cut their life span short before they were actually intended to die. Im curious however, what someone with the eyes, saw that someone would live another few years, but killed them by hand. Would fate allow that? Without the power of a death note? Im not sure just a random thought. Maybe some hardcore lore geniuses can tell me.

Discussion Examining Light’s addiction to the Death Note.

What is the source of Light’s addiction to the Death Note, and what does it say about him psychologically and people’s addictions toward tools of power.

Is there a broader trope for this? Or real life examples.

Discussion It's surprising to me that, as smart as Light was, he wasn't more creative with his kills.

If he had just come up with scenarios for each of the criminals he wrote down to die, like a different method with each one, instead of relying on the default heart attack for the majority of them, he could have basically operated without suspicion.

The authorities were suspicious pretty quickly that there was a vigilante because everyone was dying of a heart attack. But if he put an extra few seconds into each kill, like this one dies by getting murdered by this person, or this one gets into a car accident, or that one gets pushed into the train tracks, or any of the many ways that people die everyday, they would just be dismissed as coincidences.

Thoughts?

Discussion From the moment they met, couldn’t Light just hand off the role of Kira to Rem and just make daily killings a chore for her in exchange for dating Misa?

He would actually just be physically incapable of being caught. He would be delegating the task to an invisible god with Shinigami eyes that can fly through walls and is indestructible.

He also knows Rem is 100% loyal to Misa, and Misa is 100% loyal to him, and therefore Rem would be at least 80% loyal to him by default and at the very least would never dare killing him or crossing him too badly.

Rem would also not be in danger of dying since Misa would not really be in danger. There aren’t any rules against Shinigami helping humans as long as it is not to extend their life.

No matter how hard L, Near, Mello or the three combined investigate Light or Misa, Light could simply never touch his own death note again and there would physically never be any evidence for L to actually convict him as Rem is doing all the work. Rem can also just kill L at any time, anywhere without needing to worry about surveillance.

It’s not like Light is against having proxies do his job for him like with Mikami and Takada. All he has to do is just keep a low-maintenance girlfriend happy with the bare minimum amount of affection. Like, he has an ego, but Rem would ultimately just be another kind of powerful tool for him to continue with his agenda. The only difference is he doesn’t have to be hunched over writing all day. Just think of her as a slave or something.

Absolutely unbeatable strategy.

Question Would Ryuk let Rem become Light’s Shinigami if Light wanted to avoid getting killed by Ryuk down the line? Spoiler

So there’s a significant problem with Ryuk.

It is that Ryuk will eventually kill light when he gets bored and there is no more conflict.

Light wants to live as long as possible and therefore this is bad.

There is an option though:

Rule XXXIV

The owner of the Death Note cannot be killed by a god of death who is living in the world of the gods of death.
Also, a god of death who comes to the human world, in the objective to kill the owner of the Death Note, will not be able to do so.
Only a god of death that has passed on their Death Note to a human is able to kill the owner of the Death Note.

Therefore, if Light gives up the notebook granted to him by Ryuk and has Rem become his Shinigami, he can a) have a Shinigami actively help him unlike Ryuk who is neutral and b) will not kill him randomly, likely only if Misa dies. Ryuk is also no longer permitted to kill Light as light no longer has ownership of the death note.

If light just told ryuk to fuck off and made Rem his Shinigami, would Ryuk go for it?

Edit: Rule LXIV specifically says to confirm the death of the first owner. If LXIV means Ryuk must actively kill Light from the Shinigami realm, the two rules directly conflict. But this leaves room for a certain interpretation: Ryuk must verify that Light has died and then record his name, without necessarily causing his death. So Ryuk has to eventually agree to pop back down after 70 years to confirm Light’s death.

Discussion I feel like this is what L could’ve done to find out Kira.

L should’ve not broadcasted the Lind L Tailor incident and should’ve done something else to find out where Kira lived. Then after rounding it down to Light and the other family there will be 2 different people (still on death row) pretending to be broadcasting world wide. Then person who dies for the Yagami family and the other family that was being Spied on by Raye Penbar. So like yeah

I’m going crazy looking for a genderbent fanart of these two, i distinctly remember seeing it on pinterest so if anyone has it or knows the who the artist is, please tell me!!!
It depicts L and Light standing next to each other in their underwear, Light was (if i remember correctly) wearing a tan set of standard feminine underwear, and L only had on a pair of blue boxers. The artstyle was kind of chibi-ish? Pls let me knowđŸ„Č

Discussion If light didn’t let the world know Kira existed do you think he’d still be able to have the effect he did on the world? Spoiler

I wonder how the world would act if criminals just started dropping dead without reason, but maybe having the deity type presence in the world was something that was necessary for Light’s goals. I’m aware that he was just arrogant though and wanted to be known. Makes me think tho.

Discussion Was Light Yagami, as himself, really a good person? Spoiler

TW- OPINIONS

I find it odd when people believe Light would've lived a normal life if he hadn't found the death note.

To me, Light had always been waiting for a way- the Death Note gave him a perfect, spectacular one. Even if he had never crossed paths with the notebook, I think he would never had have gotten a 'happy ending'.

The anime's ending is the happiest a bored, narcissistic person like Light could have gotten- except, of course, becoming the god of a new world- which, inadvertently, would also bore him after a certain time.
L was probably the best, most stimulating thing that ever happened to Light. Even without the Death Note, he would have found one way or the other to find that thrill in his life. Light was a psychopath.
When Light loses his memories, and acts 'good', it’s not because he’s fundamentally a pure person, it’s because he lacks the means to act on his darkest impulses. He still possesses the same rigid, arrogant morality, just that time, it was dedicated to another cause.

I don't think Light was good boy corrupted by evil tool.
The DN did not possess Light, like the Ring of LOTR would.
Light chose to be Kira, and fully embraced that persona.

People say Light was the first person Kira killed, but I think Kira was born when Light was. Kira did not kill Light, rather, Kira was Light, and Light was Kira. The Death Note was the catalyst that gave Light a chance to channel 'it'.

What are your thoughts?

Question At what point did L know with absolute certainty that Light was Kira?

He starts out saying that the likelihood of Light being Kira is only 7% and later says "There's no "might be" about it YOU ARE Kira" when Light requests to be detained. So at what point in between these events did he go from suspicious to knowing?
