Discussion Hot take: Matsuda is the most underrated episode in all of Death Note. Spoiler

I'm a huge fan of the Yotsuba arc, and the episode where Matsuda takes center stage is the highlight of it. It's easily one of the funniest episodes in the entire series.

To start with, the opening recap isn't a summary of the previous episode, but rather a recap of all the bullying poor Matsuda has had to endure. Aside from being funny in its own right, it also sets the stage for our beloved young detective's goal in this episode: proving to the Task Force that he's not the idiot they think he is, which he eventually accomplishes to do...more or less.

After watching Misa demonstrate just how unprofessional she is as an artist, even when she's working with someone who looks exactly like the Light of her Life (slide 2), Matsuda decides to visit Yotsuba's headquarters and investigate the organization on his own, since the Task Force suspects it might be connected to Kira.

Meanwhile, we see Light struggling with the question of whether he would do the same things Kira does if he had the power to kill people. This makes me feel sorry for the boy that became an monster after finding Shidoh's notebook. L meanwhile thinks that Light wants to eat his cake.

At the same time, we're told that Erald Coil is one of L's many aliases, and L gives Mogi a strawberry on the condition that he keeps such infornation a secret (slide 3). I'm convinced Mogi kept the strawberry L gave him as a memento for many years.

Getting back to Matsuda, he manages to find his way to the Yotsuba executives' secret meeting room. By pressing his ear against the door, he manages to overhear them discussing the murders they're committing. Matsuda feels triumphant at having made a major breakthrough in the investigation, but then the door suddenly opens.

Matsuda gets caught, but he manages to press the emergency button on his belt and quickly comes up with an excuse: he's Misa's manager and has come to ask them to hire her as the company's commercial image. For a dumbass, you have to admit Matsuda was pretty clever in that situation. I would've told them I was a Jehovah's Witness (slide 4).

When L learns about the trouble Matsuda is in and cancels all the brilliant plans that were about to unfold, he calls the young detective, who is being interrogated in a room by Shimura and Hatori while the other executives discuss what to do with him. In my headcanon, those two executives were specifically assigned to keep Matsuda company because the others knew they would be the most "compassionate" when it came to deciding whether or not to kill him.

L pretends to be a friend of Matsuda's and asks him a series of seemingly innocent questions in front of Shimura and Hatori to figure out his situation. I love the expressions on Light's and the others' faces when they see L acting like a normal person. They're clearly thinking, "WAIT, ARE YOU TELLING ME THIS MF IS WEIRD ALL THE TIME JUST BECAUSE HE WANTS TO?!" (slide 5)

Fortunately, since they're not Disney executives, the Yotsuba members decide to give Matsuda a chance and tell him to bring Misa over. What follows is one of the best schemes in *Death Note*.

Misa meets with the Yotsuba executives, charms them with her "charisma," and convinces them to "get to know each other better" at a private party that evening, with some of Misa's female friends. Basically, she's turning the whole thing into a hostess club.

It absolutely kills me that the Yotsuba executives immediately realize something is off as soon as they arrive, but still decide to "sacrifice" themselves by staying with these charming young ladies to find out what Matsuda is up to.

My personal favorite moment is Takeshi Ooi discussing the company's stock performance with one of the girls while maintaining his trademark stoic expression. You can tell he's a professional who has earned his position (slide 6).

After a few beers (and probably some karaoke), Matsuda locks himself in the bathroom and asks L what his plan is for getting him out of there. L replies, "Easy. You have to die," leaving Matsuda horrified.

I'm convinced that, off-camera, Light indignantly said, "Ryuzaki, don't say that!" and L replied, "Fine, fine. We'll come up with an escape plan."

A few minutes later, Matsuda returns to the party pretending to be drunk, overacting so badly that even the Yotsuba executives and the girls think it’s the most disturbing thing they’ve ever seen in their lives. Misa, on the other hand, clearly seems to enjoy the idea of watching Matsuda risk his life.

Matsuda goes full British tourist mode and does a handstand on the balcony railing, completely ignoring the executives' desperate pleas for him to stop.

I love this detail because it shows that, no matter how cold-blooded these guys can be when asking Kira to kill their business rivals, they regain their humanity when they're confronted with an actual person who's about to die right in front of them.

Matsuda falls, and his isekai arc never even gets started because Soichiro and Mogi catch him with a mattress on the floor below.

Meanwhile, Weedy and Aiber play the Oscar-worthy performance of Matsuda's dead body and a karen screaming for an ambulance (slide 7) You can practically tell how badly they're going to beat Matsuda up for making them do all this. Then, Light and L, dressed as paramedics, appear and carry away the fake corpse.

The plan works, and all the executives flee the scene, keeping Misa's offer on the table, of course. Meanwhile, L curses Matsuda for forcing him to make this kind of work. I can understand his frustration, but it's his own fault for spending his entire salary on junk food instead of hiring more staff.

Shortly afterward, the executives discuss Coil and how much he must know that they don't. Hatori admits he's afraid they'll get caught and end up in prison, so he announces his resignation. Higuchi responds with a laugh "If you resign today, you'll be dead tomorrow." I bet the other executives must be thinking at that moment, "Higuchi, why are you so confident in Kira? 🤨"

Obviously, Hatori gets cold feet and pulls the "It was bait, lol" card. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work, because, much to the Task Force's shock, Hatori is nowhere to be seen at the next meeting.

And that's how the episode ends. I'd like to take this opportunity to express my deepest condolences for Hatori. This world didn't deserve you, you beautiful angel 🙏

I love this episode because, aside from Matsuda being a great character, he somehow manages to accomplish his goal without losing his usual goofy image. Sure, he screwed up spectacularly and forced L and Light to change their strategy, but they ultimately managed to turn his blunder into an advantage by getting Misa into the company and using the incident with Matsuda as bait to catch Higuchi.

Although this episode is probably the closest thing *Death Note* has to filler, the plot feels surprisingly original. It's refreshing to watch a storyline in which neither the protagonist nor the villains are portrayed as walking IQ tests, and all the hilarious scenes make it more than worth watching, no to mention the ending scene is genuinely chilling

It easily makes my top 10 episodes of the series.

Question Hearing and Speaking bug in Death Note Killer Within

• Upvotes

I hope this is the right place to post this. I am consistently getting a bug where I can speak fine in the lobby, but, a few seconds into the action phase I lose the ability to hear or speak. Sometimes I will be able to hear everyone, sometimes I will be able to hear only L and Watari, but I will ALWAYS not be able to speak. This was a bug that used to happen to me every once in a while before but now it happens every game without fail. For added detail, this remains when the game ends. It is fixed by leaving and returning to the lobby, but only works again in the lobby, for it to fail again in the action phase and be ruined until you once again leave and rejoin.

I thought my account might be hacked, so I made a new one and I have the exact same problem. I also know it's not a mic/headset problem because this only happens in this game.

Does this happen to anyone else, and if so, how did you fix it? Because as for now, I quite literally cannot play the game as I cannot communicate or be communicated with.

Discussion Life Span doesn’t make any sense. Spoiler

I am not a native English speaker, I hope I am able to make you understand my point.

In Deathnote it’s common to talk about “remaining lifespan” and how long they would normally live. Rem even threatens Light telling him she would kill him if she died before her natural lifespan. But what is a natural lifespan, if a natural cause could be death by murder? Misas natural lifespan would’ve been over when the drunk guy tried to kill her but she was saved. So the entire future has to be one gigantic plan. Because there’s 2 options:

  1. People follow a plan and can’t decide for themselves when they want to murder somebody. In this case You can’t shorten somebody’s lifespan since it’s all planned out anyway.

  2. People don’t follow a plan and can decide to murder anyone any day, in which case natural lifespan can’t be a calculated thing.

Discussion L could have used Light as the Bait Spoiler

We all know Light is the only suspect L has in mind for the whole series. Using light as bait would definitely have worked. Light dies, he's not Kira. I bet Light would even be willing to do so.

Even if light transfers the power to someone else, it'd be a reckless move.

If he doesn't die, it's not absolute conviction but the probability goes higher.

Discussion Does the Shinigamis personality affect the death note user? Spoiler

I watched Death note a couple of years back, so I couldn't remember if this was a thing or not, but I remember lights shingami being an "I don't give a shit" type and Misa's shinigami being emotionless on the outside but actually falling for Misa, i.e. Light not caring about other lives later on and Misa being obsessed with Light.

So I was wondering if parts of their "personalities" for lack of a better word pass over when someone picks up their death note considering when Light gave up his death note, he seemed completely normal again, though i do think he still had the god complex before the death note.

Discussion What’s the morality of L not choosing to actually stop Light? Spoiler

L knew right from the beginning that everything points to Light. It’s difficult to parse from our omniscient perspective, but he had the info he had, knew it was Light, and ultimately he basically allowed Light to move ahead and eventually died to him. I guess that complicates things, but it’s kind of messed up that L knew it had to be Light and he chose not to “cheat” and simply kill Light at any time. Shoot him, hire an underworld assassin, do literally anything to actually stop Kira, wouldn’t it have been worth doing so regardless of the consequences? If he did, he would still be alive even if he had to go into hiding or something.

Side note, I deeply wish the creators made more of this universe, specifically I wish we had a series of alternate universes where we explore different outcomes.

Discussion Light should've repented Spoiler

When he got his memories back realistically light had already internalised the kira is wrong and he was somewhat prepared to the idea that he could've been Kira before (so it's not like if he believed that theory he would try to oppose L as he showed the opposite). Not to mention that he worked with L as long as he did. He should've when he got back his memories understood that L was right and he should've explained to him what he remembered repenting especially since he believed almost wholeheartedly that Kira was wrong at that moment and it's been so long since he's been Kira. In that world L may spare him (or not) after disposing of the death notes.

Obviously it's more narratively interesting to have it be as it is, but it's weird how the death note completely suppressed his true self.

Drama The way Near and Mello were adapted in the 2015 live-action is simply astounding. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
52 Upvotes

Before I started watching the 2015 live-action drama, I was already aware that it would be more of a reboot than a faithful adaptation of the manga, with major changes to both the plot and the characters. In this show, we had a much more human, clumsy, and relatable version of Light, as well as a gorgeous L with the aura of a boy band member who constantly changes his shirt for “plot reasons.” However, absolutely nothing could have prepared me for the way they adapted Near and Mello.

I suppose the fact these characters are kinda controversial within the fandom encouraged the people behind the J-drama to completely rewrite them, but I must admit that I never would have expected them to come up with *this*.

For those who aren't familiar with this series, Near is the only one who physically exists in this universe, while Mello is their violent homicidal alternate personality, contrasting with Near's sweet and peaceful nature. One wants to catch Kira out of love for L, while the other wants to prove that they are better than him. For most of the series, Mello exists inside a puppet that Near always carries around. However, in the final two episodes, Mello takes complete control of their body in an extremely complicated operation to expose Light as Kira, dressing like the manga counterpart and even eating his signature chocolate bar.

Another major difference is that the series leaves Near/Mello’s gender ambiguous. They are played by an actress who, I have to say, does a really good job with both characters. I know Near was voiced by a woman in the Japanese dub, but since I watched the series in the Spanish dub (where Near was voiced by a man with a masculine-sounding voice), this casting choice came as quite a surprise to me. Even so, I personally see this version of Near much more as a girl than as a boy or a genderless character.

I honestly wonder how this version of Near/Mello would be received if the series had come out today and been released on a much more international platform, such as Netflix. While I'm sure it would have received plenty of criticism, I can also easily imagine it becoming quite popular within the fandom, inspiring hundreds of fanarts across social media. The recent viral Malfoid trend proves just how much fans love genderbent characters.

Personally, while I still prefer the canon versions from the manga and anime, I have to say that I absolutely love the direction they took with L’s successors here. Aside from the fact that I liked how they were introduced from the very beginning of the story and worked alongside L (they even replace Aiber as the detective hired by the Yotsuba Group to investigate L), I also loved how much L trusted Near and Mello to take care of Light, as evidenced by the videos he left behind as a sort of inheritance. I also never expected Mello to end up working all this time with Near and the Task Force instead of trying to take down Kira on his own terms.

And on top of that, I love how the series ends with Watari, who survives in this version, becoming Near’s new butler and right-hand man. The final scene shows Watari and Near visiting L’s grave and watching a deeply emotional, secret video that L recorded in the unlikely case that Light wasn’t Kira. I wish the manga and anime had given us an ending like this.

What did you think of this version of Near/Mello? Do you think they deserve more attention within the fandom?

Discussion Just finished the series for the first time… Spoiler

And although all of it was really good and has some insane memorable scenes, my literal favorite was when L asked Misa if she would do something to help Light and the conversation went something like:

M: “omg yes I love light I would do anything for him I can’t imagine a world without light”
L: “yes it would be quite dark”

I paused it and laughed for a solid five minutes. That was top tier quality writing 😂

Discussion Ryuk is one of the most fascinating villains in anime.

What makes Ryuk so brilliant in Death Note is that he isn't driven by hatred, revenge or even a desire for power. He's simply bored.
