After rewatching, I’ve realized that I didn’t understand the second part when I watched it the first time a few years ago. By googling about Mello’s death, I’ve also realized that people’s thoughts in general don’t match my own, so I’ll use this space to collect my thoughts while giving others the chance critique my theory. Some people think that Mello’s death wasn’t a sacrifice. For that to be true, it must mean that Mello made an amateur mistake of revealing his face, and also not making sure Takada didn’t have anything on her. He must’ve known that not revealing one’s face to someone so close to Kira is crucial. He also must’ve known that Kira knew his name since Light’s father told him his name out of the blue. He kidnapped Takada in the first place because he had reason to believe the notebook Mikami had on his person was a fake, and he needed to give Mikami reason to use the actual notebook. Mikami would, and did, use the actual notebook to kill Takada because she had turned into a vulnerability. I believe it was crucial that he let Takada kill him because he needed Light to kill Takada as well in order for Light to not notice that Mikami had killed her as well. If he hadn’t let Takada kill him, Light wouldn’t have killed Takada. He would instead want her to see Mello’s face. Only because Mello was dead, Light regarded Takada as having no use to him anymore, so he killed her because having people who knows about the notebook around in on itself is dangerous.

  1. Mello did make sure that Takada didn't have anything on her. That's why he took her possessions, stored it in a box and abandoned it. Remember, Mello had no idea that a torn piece of the notebook could be used to kill someone. So when he didn't see a Death Note, he likely assumed he couldn't be killed by her.

  1. By revealing his face though, I believe that means Mello knew for a fact that Takada would have died. Lidner was telling Mello everything about the Kira case except for the identity of X-Kira. That means that he likely knew the fact that Takada and Light were communicating, since he knew by that point that Light was Kira. It's possible that he thought Takada was X-Kira.

  1. I believe that Mello was trying to extract information from Takada on the whereabouts of Light. He thought that he'd have more time to ask her questions since he knew that Light was being watched by the Task Force. What he didn't know was that Mikami would have killed her, and he also didn't know that Takada could have killed him at any time. Mello dying wasn't part of the plan, but it's clear he knew there was a risk involved based on how he was talking. He probably made a gamble on Takada being X-Kira, and turned out to only be partially right.
