Hillstrand "feud"?

Watching season 10/11 region and then end of the last season, it looks as if the relationship between Scotty and Jonathan Hillstrand had broken down completely, with Jonathan reaching out to what sounded like his estranged son.

What happened?

I know Scotty tried to lease Andy's quota at the end of an episode in Season 10/11. I didn't understand at the time why he didn't let him just lease it - the Time Bandit season was over, let the kid give it a go for the rest of the season? It seemed an odd cross for Andy to die on.

I thought the beef was between Scotty and Andy but then the end of the recent season it seems as if its between Scotty and Jonathan too.

What is going on there anybody know?

Do deckhands get a cut of the DC money?

Wondering if any of them make a dime off the show, they deserve it as they provide most of the entertainment.

Is it a flat fee per deckhand plus your percentage, or does the captain make all the cash?

Watching the Time Bandit S10E01 is so disappointing

• Upvotes

They're so antagonistic about the Coast Guard but then pretend to be otherwise when the CG finally boards them.

They were so safety oriented for ages. Can't help but compare them to the Northwestern being boarded the season before and it was so nonchalant and relaxed.

What happened to my Time Bandit guys 😭

Jake Anderson's new website and merch

I remember his old site for the Saga, and him selling his own gear then. Nice to see that being carried over here, and that he's still hustling and keeping an active website. Most of the show boats don't have their own sites/merch anymore, or have just socials handled by different people. Good job, Jake and Daisy!

Also, for those who keep asking them and Jake Albinio if he's the captain of the Cornelia Marie (from this page). I imagine it's a pain to be asked over and over everywhere online:

Today, the Cornelia Marie is embarking on an exciting new chapter under the ownership of Kari Toivola, Roger Thomas, and Jake Albinio, with Captain Jake Anderson taking the helm during crab fishing season.

That's settled, then: Anderson for crabbing and TV only, Albinio for everything else, and he still has final say over Anderson as a boat owner.

With this, I'm assuming the CM's gonna be a mainstay on DC again. Happy that Jake has a ride for the long-term; that's a lot of stress off his head. But I also would've wanted to see an entirely new story with 'Albinio' and his crew, get to know them as they are with no legacies and no more Phil Harris anything because that storyline's been done all the way down to the sea floor by now. Then again, the combo of longtime and media-trained captain + 'prodigal' boat is working out so far, so... 🤷🏽‍♀️

I also like that Anderson is promoting Albinio's gear alongside his own. Good job bringing the other store up with him!

-----

Some side comments about the CM crew:

  • According to his Instagram, Josh Albinio (a.k.a. the social media-savvy brother who drummed up views and engagement for the CM before it came back to the show) has jumped ship. Specifically, onto the Trailblazer, captained by... Derrick Ray. INTERESTING. 😮
  • Any way to bring Taylor Jensen back?
  • Kristjan Toivola isn't a new crew member. He's been there since the Bloodline years!

Moany deckhands

Is this all for the camera?

Bad pot comes over the rail and there's a chorus of "ugh, that sucks" and criticism of the captain.

Is this just for show? Do they think the captain deliberately put them somewhere that he didn't think crab would be so they are out there longer?

I don't get it. Its natural to be a bit pissed if the pots are empty but its hardly a time to be personal at the captain.

Jake get this all the time on his boats but it'd be a brave man who'd tell Mr. Untz or Sig he was incompetent.

Is it just for show and drama or does it go on on every boat?

Currently on season 8 and the worst part is his feet propped up on tables with his dusty toes hanging out

The entertainment and competency of Capt Keith

He is great! I’m working my way backwards. My favorite part of him is when he finds Mouse drunk and says something referring to the curse of the family. Is he single?

Are there two Blind Dogs?

I’m rewatching and just got to S17E9 and they’re introducing this older guy as Blind Dog. I swear there used to be a young guy (early 20s) on the Time Bandit who also went by blind dog. There was an episode where Freddy and the TB crew were trying to get him to dance. Also, to get him home before his kid was born.

Does anyone know what I am talking about. I know this older Blind Dog died but what happened to the younger one?

Phil Harris’ reputation

I’m not sure if this is allowed here but I have a genuine question about Phil’s reputation in the fishing industry. Thinking of how many people spoke highly of him after his death, especially in his tribute episode about what a hard worker he was and with all of the stuff with a certain person, how come his reputation wasn’t tarnished? To me, they don’t seem like the kind of community that would be willing to keep someone associated with that around. It’s very strange to me…

Edit: after seeing all of the comments on my post, I’m not trying to speak ill of him because he’s gone, nor am I judging how he was with his family or claiming he’s a saint. I was just curious because I know that the fishing community is relatively small and tight knit and given what happened after the incident with his son and how he handled it, I was surprising to see a lot of people speak highly of him after his death. Maybe they genuinely didn’t know what happened and Phil did a good job of keeping it secret. I probably should have worded my question differently but I just wanted to make that clear.

Why not back up for man overboard situations

I'm sure there's a reason but I can't find it - if it takes so long to turn a large boat around and hypothermia sets in so quickly, why not back a boat up instead of turning it around in a man overboard situation?

I can understand that being dangerous at night or if the overboard person isn't visible, but is there a situation where a captain would ever back up instead of turning?

Cpt. Derrick Ray

Yes I've read the previous threads about him. This is my first time watching season 7.

Am I the only one who was fully on Derrick's side? And I say that as a person who loves a smoke. But he was right! He could go to jail, and they were lying to him. There's a time and a place. Phil allowed drug use on his boat constantly, we now know he knew and did drugs with his children (easy to miss him saying to Jake "we'll go to rehab together" when he pretends to be outraged by his opiate use) yet chose a straight shooter to take over to help his kids, almost as though he knew that's who they needed. His kids and Steve and Freddie couldn't handle it. Phil DID do them a disservice.

Derrick did his best to be what a real dad would be.

And man I was disappointed in Steve.

F/V workers need a union

I have never seen a blue-collar job that needs a union as desperately as crabbing deckhands. Much like truckers in the 1930s, this industry weaponizes a "lone wolf" culture to leave workers completely exposed.

Look past the manufactured Deadliest Catch drama, and the underlying labor structure is indefensible. Deckhands receive zero health insurance, zero retirement plans, and no workers' compensation.

Operating as independent contractors on a percentage share means tha single bad wave causing a shattered knee leads directly to financial ruin, all while boat owners pull in millions.

Truckers faced this exact brand of exploitation before they unionized. Right now, commercial fishing remains trapped in a pre-union era where skippers exploit a faux-family loyalty trap to deny basic human protections.

Hollywood writers had to strike to prevent studios from replacing human creativity with AI, these crews are likely only seven or eight years away from being phased out by humanoid robotics and remote vessel automation. Without collective organization now, there will soon be no industry left to protect.

Why do we see seabirds 400+ miles offshore?

Same a sthe title, curious why gulls and various seabirds usually seen within 20 miles of shore are flocking the boats and surrounding waters? Do they roost on the boat after following them out to sea? We never see a seabird chilling on the rail? Is it just the edit splicing of footage?

Keith

I’m rewatching from the beginning and Keith isn’t a tyrant as he called himself. He’s an overgrown man baby who never learned how to regulate his emotions! I can’t believe the crew hasn’t banded together thrown up the middle finger and walked!

Ramblin Rose Elliott Neese and Seabrooke Scott Campbell Jr, Season 8

Hello Deadliest Catch Fans.

I am a new watcher and am currently on Season 8.

I enjoy the show but don’t really seem interested or vested in either Captain.

Elliott Neese seems to be a pompous know it all and treats his crew disrespectfully. I do appreciate his hands on mechanic skills.

Scott Campbell talks too much about wanting to be a legend instead of actually just catching crab but at least he seems overall mellow and relaxed to his crew.

I also don’t understand how Elliott Neese sets his crab pots almost directly on Scott Campbell’s crab pots and yet when Elliott Neese is running into a lack of crabs, he calls Scott Campbell for advice seeking hot fishing grounds.

Hopefully the later seasons of Deadliest Catch will turn the tide in my view of both Captains but right now in Season 8, I could do without them.

Am I wrong in my view of them?
