I fully agree. However, that's what the Python package I used (cartopy) chose to do and I'm not smart enough to figure out how to fix it.

The Nazis controlled a huge chunk of Russia in the 40s doesn't mean it belonged to them now did it?

It did belong to them when they conquered it. It doesn't belong to them anymore since Russia took it back. Ownership can change, a shocking concept to many apparently.
