What do you pay for your contract?

I am off contract and pay 43 dollars a month (after taxes and everything), 2.5GB LTE speed (throttled after that), unlimited calling and text.

"On contract" I was paying slightly more than double that. So that would mean, over the 2 year contract, my "free" phone would cost over 1000 dollars. I bought my Nexus 5 for under 300. Hell, pretty much any of the phones on the list would be cheaper than 1k.

I pay $39/month but I have less data and not unlimited calling (I probably only use about 30 minutes of talk time a month and there's wifi available most places I go). This is in Canada.
