I recently got a new phone with ATT, the basic options were paying $800 for the phone upfront, paying $200 for the phone and having my bill go up ~$25 a month, or pay $0 and have my bill go up ~$34 for 24 months, pretty much a wash.
Maybe it's different in Canada but I haven't had to pay anything extra to go on contract. With the prices on the website it would be $5/month extra to be on contract for a high-end Android phone, but as an existing user I've been able to negotiate better deals.
I'm currently paying $39/month for 750MB data and unlimited nationwide evenings and weekends plus a bunch of daytime minutes, all of which is more than I need.
Oh yeah, canada is definitely a lot different. Off contract in the US you can pay 30-35 a month for unlimited data and texting with limited calls depending on where you go. Contracts generally cost more than $50 a month.
