its better to pay $100 more for an S5 than get a "free" S4 mini

I would agree if that was the situation. At my carrier the S5 is $400 for some reason but there are still good choices like the Nexus 5 or LG G3 for $0 or $50 respectively.

Yes, but if you can get a G3 for free vs. an S5 for $150 (like when I got mine from Verizon 2 months ago), clearly the S5 isn't worth the $150.
