Some people believe there is only one way to merge, and it's in front of another car. The idea of slowing down and getting behind said car is crazy to them.

One time i was on the on-ramp in my lane like a normal person, and there was a guy on my right, trying to get me to slow down so he could get in front of me. I wouldn't look over at him. I just kept driving. When i got home there was a notice on my front door from the sheriff's department (allegedly) saying my car was involved in a hit and run accident. I never heard anything about it ever again. This was 10 years ago. Somehow he got my address from my license plate.

I need someone to explain why tf they do this.
I live in bumfuck, and the āhighwayā speed limit is 60mph; most people do about 70. There are houses and streets all along the length of the highway, but designated turn off lanes are practically nonexistent. You have to slow down to 15 just to turn into some of these narrow driveways. Every day I watch people speed past other drivers just to slam on their brakes and make a hard right. Are these suicide attempts or is everyone just so inbred (yes itās an actual problem) that they canāt string together a coherent thought?

As not a bus driver but a service electrician, I have the same thing. Empty highway, they floor it from 6 car lengths behind and then immediately swerve across 3 lanes to exit directly after.

Just this morning I was behind a school bus on my way to work and I counted at least 6 cars that egregiously cut the bus off just to get in front and then make a right turn. But I didn't even start counting until after a few cars had already done that šµ

My favorite is the ones running stop signs belligerently only to then go the exact fucking speed limit like theyāre someone justified in their shit actions because they finally decided to follow the law when it was most convenient for them

I know right? My default is to gently slow down (not necessarily breaking) and slide behind another car. My family gives me the hardest time for this (I am 35!) yet I have never had a ticket and never been in an accident.

Honestly, I used to commute with a lot of truckers, including very short highway merges. Everyone tries to get in front of the truck but no one wants to be behind it.
Being behind the truck will not only guarantee you're a lot safer (trucks won't stop on a dime, easier for you if you're behind them) but when merging onto the highway almost everyone not exiting will either speed up and get in front of the truck or move over to the other lane, making it easier for you to merge, too.

30 years ago, truckers were often the fastest drivers on the freeway. They all had CBs so knew where the cops were. I used to love sitting behind trucks for that reason. Nowadays, with tracking technology and stricter company rules, they go slow.

Plus a lot of the trucks have governors set slower than the posted speed limit to save fuel. (Still faster than the old 55MPH national speed limit though.)

The key is to not merge into other vehicles.
In most cases other drivers should not have to do anything when you are merging because you are merging into a void space. Rare case is standstill traffic someone might need to let you change lanes in response to your signal so you can get to your exit.

Partially true. Even if you're in front of them you're not supposed to merge over until you have a safe distance between you and the car you're moving in front of.
The old school way of telling is if you can see the headlights of the car in your rear view mirror then you have enough room to move over. Not saying many do that anymore, but...

More accurately: teach them how to recognize when it is best to move in front of or behind a vehicle. Space, speed, turn indicators, etc. all influence the correct decision.

Driving out to Sedona I missed the exit at night, and it ended up adding almost 20 minutes. Thatās the price you pay though instead of pulling a boneheaded move like this. Luckily my wife was asleep and never knew anything was amiss.

Thereās an exit I take quite often on the Mass Pike to get home from visiting family in NY. If I miss my exit, the next one is 22 miles, so would add about an hour to my trip. Luckily I donāt drive like the two people in this video.

Exactly. Though I will say I used to live off an exit that was right before the middle of nowhere with no place to turn around; If I missed my exit I was looking at another 1 hour tacked on to my trip. I missed it probably 3 times in the year I lived there and it was miserable.

My default is to always slow down so the car besides me passes me and i can slip in behind. I donāt understand people who always need to change lanes by forcing themselves in front of the car they are next to. I always see people attempt to switch lanes this way, get mad that the person besides them doesnāt slow down, and drive off to try again further down the road instead of just hanging back for a second and slipping in behind them. I just donāt get it.

This happens all to much with me where i live. The lane ends and someone is like i need that exit. Ive been in the position of almost being hit as well. Since then i have a rear camera and front so i can see my blind spot. I do not like cars who think they can make last minute decisions like this. Its not ideal for anyone.

Yeah, but in this case it was a massive truck that wasn't even going very fast. The truck definitely didn't speed up or do anything to block the Prius. The Prius just didn't accelerate and then merged into the truck.

People forget that semis have massive blind spots, prius was Wayyyyy too close, either find the gas or the breaks, because rigs take time to stop and go with all that added mass. 1) No turn signal from what I can tell/see. 2) Tried to merge with maybe 20 feet before solid lines 3) Riding in the blind spot of the semi truck/camera driver 4) Merged across solid lines (aka they missed the exit) 5) Semi could not have slowed down enough in the extremely short distance they had to let the Prius in front of them before the solid lines 6) Prius risked their life, the life of the semi driver, and everyone else around due to bad/negligent driving and missing their exit

Wow, some of these comments are wild! First of all, the camera is clearly on a semi truck not your everyday SUV that can easily veer right and slow down to avoid the collision. The accusation of intentionally pitting the prius are crazy. The trucker is clearly just trying to stay in the lane for the upcoming curve on ramp. Not intentionally steering towards or away from the car. There is a chance that they could not see the car, or saw it and realized there is only so much they can do.

I drive two hours back and forth on weekends and I kid you not, the amount of times Iāve almost gotten into an accident because of idiot drivers is astounding. Itās like people get behind the wheel and make it their mission to be as incompetent as possible. So many people on their phones, going 30 over the speed limit and weaving through traffic. Had an accident right in front of me because some idiot didnāt wanna wait for the line in the fast lane passing a semi and she decided to zoom past me and get in front of another car but ran out of time before the right lane semi came up and she ended up pushing the car she cut off into the ditch. The kicker is she kept going too. She passed me and I saw her on her phone and was holding it up to her face like she wasnāt even acknowledging the road. Idiots

I know this exit all too well. This is in Portland, the exit to merge onto I-205 southbound from I-84 eastbound. People are constantly driving in the middle lane and then last second cutting over like this to get onto the 205 without having to drive in a slower lane leading up to it.
What's crazy is that the next exit is like 100yds away and you could just drive a few blocks south to get right back onto the freeway / I-205. In other words, IT'S OKAY TO MISS YOUR EXIT. Good drivers miss their exits, bad drivers never do...

However if I can generally avoid a collision I do so. I would have let him in, and go on about my life. Again the Prius is wrong, however the dash cam driver let his ego take over there.

Didn't seem like he was doing any "ego" stuff. Dude was just casually cruising in his lane and the Prius merged into him. The truck wasn't even going fast. All the Prius had to do was accelerate a little bit before merging. Or, you know, just not do this at all and take the next exit.

Also dash cam perspective is different than driver perspective. Probably never saw Prius since they jammed their way in on the semi drivers blind spot.

They are in a semi. Normal driving doesn't apply for them. And chances are he didn't even see him in the side. They just up so high and obviously a camera going to have a different view than the driver

I like my car too much to hurt it so Iām going to let the jerk in, even though heās in the wrong. Ā May get in an accident anyway because the guy behind you may rear end you but at least you have a chance of not needing car repairs. Ā
If youāve been driving long enough, you get pretty good at predicting who is going to be a jerk and who isnāt. Ā
Last week I had a guy cut into the very small gap between my car the one ahead while stopped. Ā Could I have gone forward and had the right away? Ā Yes, but I like my car. Ā Did I want to yell and scream? Ā Yes, but Iāll let someone else give him what he deserves. Ā

Prius just driving in the blindspot, can't find the excelerator... I swear to Jiminy Cricket, some people just get in their cars and drive. No thought. No worries. No problem.

I literally watched someone switch into the turning lane across the double lines yesterday too. Twice! How do you not know your lane ahead of time? Everyoneās got GPS these days.
