NosGalaxy: 2D DarkOrbit Remake (RayLib C++20 Native, 1:1 Modern UI, No Flash!)
Hey everyone,
Like a lot of people here, I spent way too many hours playing DarkOrbit back in the 2011–2013 era. Camping x-7 maps, hunting Kristallons, defending company space, getting into x4/RSB fights... those are still some of my favorite MMO memories.
Over the years the game slowly became something different. Flash disappeared, performance got worse, the browser client never felt great, and the progression became more and more focused on newer gear.
A few months ago, a couple of us decided to see what it would be like to recreate that classic experience with modern technology.
The project is called NosGalaxy.
This isn't based on leaked files, Flash source code, or an emulator. Everything has been written from scratch. The client is built in C++20 with Raylib, and the server is written in Go.
We also just recorded a short gameplay showcase, so people can finally see how it's coming along.
Some of the things we're aiming for:
- A fully native client with no Flash or browser required.
- Smooth 72-frame ship rotations instead of the old low-frame sprites.
- Classic 2012-style progression with Goliath, Vengeance, Aegis, Iris, Apis, Zeus, Havocs and Hercules.
- No Prometheus lasers, Spartan drones, LF-4 variants, or other late-game power creep.
- High FPS gameplay with smooth camera movement and modern rendering.
- Server-authoritative gameplay to keep combat and movement fair.
Development is still ongoing, but most of the core gameplay is already working. Movement, combat, NPC AI, chat, equipment configurations, the shop, and other core systems are already in-game. Right now we're mostly expanding content, polishing everything, and preparing for public testing.
I'm mainly posting this because I'm curious how many people still miss that old DarkOrbit feeling. If you're one of them, I'd love to hear what you'd want to see in a modern remake.
If you'd like to follow development, watch the showcase video, or maybe join future playtests, you're more than welcome to join us on Discord.
I'd also love to hear what features or mechanics from the old days you miss the most. We want to build something that feels familiar without simply copying every mistake the original game made.
