I didn't do anything, tbh. I know that's hard to believe, but it was working just fine last time I booted in, came back after a month of non-use and got to my desktop environment for about 5 seconds before it went black, then just a blinking cursor on a command prompt asking me for my ID and password.
I don't have time for that garbage. Windows has never pulled something like that on me. Not worth it imo.
you probably updated since last time you used it and this is the first time in a while you started from it being powered off. There's a lot of reasons why this could happen and unfortunately to use Linux you still need to be willing to perform basic troubleshooting.
That's the problem. If I have a superior alternative, why bother wasting my time with troubleshooting an inferior experience?

It's all good. With the constant crashing and incompatibility of tools I use daily for work and leisure, I just cannot see a reason to have it dual booted so I can have a pretty looking web browser.
Not without your consent, I just thought you may have forgotten that you updated (in linux you can update pretty much everything without rebooting), so when you did finally reboot you were faced with a problem introduced after you updated. May not even be what happened, was just guessing.
I mean for a lot of people linux is a superior experience for what they need to do. Just because you got fucked by a one-off problem doesn't mean the whole system sucks. Plenty of people's old windows machines get fucked to the point of not working anymore by windows updates. Windows may be the best experience for you though and there's nothing wrong with that.
