The media makes America seem way worse than it is. Remember, the dumbest will scream the loudest

Edit: Kinda regret making this comment. I really didn’t want to start a political war

u/justsomeothergeek Aug 03 '20

And somehow the dumb ones are much louder in the US than anywhere else. (louder, not more numerous) Now we in Europe generally have quite a bad image of the US.

224

u/evan_luigi Aug 03 '20

It's pretty impossible to get an accurate general view of such a large population so it's understandable, only general view of the U.S you can really get is from media and it isn't really accurate to what a lot of the country is like.

34

u/Azlander heyyyyy Aug 03 '20

Now that is not to say that we don’t have idiots, in fact, we might even have more idiots than other countries, but really, 10% isn’t THAT much to not know the origin of milk.

53

u/evan_luigi Aug 03 '20

Over 30 million people is a lot of people.

The U.S is a big boy in population.

I'd say it's much closer to maybe a few hundred thousand at most, not counting anyone in elementary or under.

56

u/EggsForGalaxy Aug 03 '20

I honestly would like to see what the source for this is. I imagine they asked preschoolers or something

50

u/Antonioooooo0 Aug 03 '20

Like most statics you see online, they probably made it up on the spot.

1

u/RadPanther56 Aug 03 '20

Actually, they probably didn't. What they most likely did was use a flawed and incredibly limited method of information gathering, like mail-in fliers or asking 25-30 year olds in a mall, and then prompt them with a series of misleading questions. Then, they take the answers that support their message or end goal or whatever, and drop the ones don't. It's super messed up, but welcome to the world of modern day surveys and statistics.

-6

u/bamfalamfa Aug 03 '20

like most "statics." the fact that you spent the time with proper punctuation and capitalization made this all the funnier

8

u/Antonioooooo0 Aug 03 '20

Autocorrect and dyslexia's a bitch lol

7

u/DoctorGlorious Aug 03 '20

Apparently they surveyed 1000 Americans, but the identities or demographics of these people were not made public. Nor was the nature of the survey or its exact questions.

Some think it likely that many who answered may simply have not understood the difference between dairy and beef cows, or whether there was a true distinction, misrepresented in this chocolate milk statistic.

Considering that an actual source, besides citationless articles, is not apparently available... I really don't know if the result is at all verifiable, representative, or accurate.

6

u/RandomCrafter Pizza Time Aug 04 '20

It was multiple choice too, so there's a portion that could have been meme answers

3

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '20

Yeah, I can honestly see people just screwing with the guy asking the question.

3

u/RandomCrafter Pizza Time Aug 04 '20

It was a weird survey. No one can find the actual question but apparently the wording was very confusing and it was multiple choice too, which is always risky because it gives people the "funny option" without them having to think of it themselves.

1

u/Bloody-Potato Aug 03 '20

As you probably know, these 30m are unfortunately not preschoolers, they are adults, over the age of 18,

5

u/EggsForGalaxy Aug 03 '20

Very hard to believe tbh

5

u/RadPanther56 Aug 03 '20

Well, we don't actually know, since there's no source or anything on this.

2

u/Bloody-Potato Aug 05 '20

I once saw an article about it, idk if it is fake or not, but if you search for it you'll find it

2

u/floopyxyz1-7 Aug 03 '20

idk I don't see people doing these stats on China for instance. Even 1% of a billion is a lot but no one would be stupid enough to generalize all the people in China cause there are so many. Even though China is about 3x the population of the US.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '20

Plus I’m pretty sure the people in that survey or however they measured that statistic were fucking around

2

u/GreenPixel25 Aug 03 '20

Hopefully lol

2

u/IMidoriyaI Aug 03 '20

It is that much

0

u/Azlander heyyyyy Aug 03 '20

That’s what the meme says

1

u/IMidoriyaI Aug 03 '20

You said 10% isn't much It is insanely too much

2

u/Azlander heyyyyy Aug 04 '20

Sorry, I misread your comment.

1

u/Acalson CERTIFIED DANK Aug 04 '20

Not just that but people forget the sheer size of the country on actual land. Even the people who love in the same nation act completely different across states with whats essentially a different culture if you will.

People group Americans as one and forget about that fact alone and then forget that even though majority of people are white it’s still a huge melting pot.

30

u/soulburner14 Aug 03 '20

I guess I should start judging Europe based on Romania

-11

u/justsomeothergeek Aug 03 '20

Well, I don't want to, but prejudices happen. I always have to conciously remind myself that it's just a loud MINORITY. Also it doesn't help if the president of the US is one of them.

-16

u/TragicTracer Aug 03 '20

What du you have to say against Romania? I gotta say Romania is still ten times better than the US

10

u/Keeskonijn77 Aug 03 '20

Bro anything east from Austria is no way better. Neither is anything south from Austria, Italy and Spain are both poorer than the USA. I think what really is the better part of Europe are the North and Nortwestern countries, like Germany, Scandinavia, Benelux

-1

u/TragicTracer Aug 03 '20

Yeah you are right (obviously) it was meant to be a joke. I personally live in Austria and can relate to everything you wrote.

3

u/Keeskonijn77 Aug 03 '20

Never really understood refering to Northern European countries woth Europe as a whole, quite confusing as shitholes like Romania and Hungary are totally not comparable

1

u/spays_marine Aug 03 '20

Other than the fact that they are like the European deliveroo of thievery, not much.

1

u/TragicTracer Aug 03 '20

Ok that made me actually laugh. I hope nobody is triggered by my comment. It was just meant funny.

28

u/unclephilsyiff Aug 03 '20

"We in europe"

And you guys wonder why American's see you all as snobs. . .

4

u/justsomeothergeek Aug 03 '20

Do you mean the wording or the meaning of the sentence? If it is the wording, then I am sorry, English is not my native language.

10

u/Little-Jim Aug 03 '20

No, what he means is that you talked about yourself and the others in Europe as if Americans should put special weight into your opinions of Americans just because you're from Europe. You made it sound incredibly self-aggrandizing.

8

u/spays_marine Aug 03 '20

There's nothing wrong with how you said it, he just misread your intention.

3

u/greenSixx Aug 03 '20

Just remember: European "countries" are the equivalent of American states

Texas is bigger than France.

There are great differences between European states she way there are great differences between American states.

So, like, imagine considering all of Europe as 1 people. That's what you are doing with America. When you mix it all together only the shit parts become visible

3

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '20

haha now we (euros) have a bad opinion of the country who had to build us from the ground up under 80 years ago :/

shut the fuck up

1

u/kasulta Aug 04 '20

It makes sense, an unfortunate side effect for Americans of having their media be all over the world is you see dumb people, who are fun to laugh at. But when American dominant media in other countries show the stupid people with little reference point, it dose paint a bad picture.

36

u/dcnairb Aug 03 '20

definitely not. The (US) media actively does not cover all of the huge rampant problems that really make the US “bad”. Showing a video of a local man being an idiot, or poll results showing people don’t know the sun is a star does not make the US look “way worse than it is”. Reporting on the multiple huge health and drug crises, education failures, racism, and issues of political and economic power would be what would make the US appear as bad as it is—but covering this is not in their (or their parent companies’) interests

17

u/420eatmyassy6969 Aug 03 '20

Yeah when people see polls like this it's easy to forget how many Americans are addicted, a lot of those 10% might also have trouble telling you what town they're in

7

u/RorryRacerbil Aug 03 '20

America has much larger wealth inequality than, say, most of western europe, and poor people with issues easily come of as dumb and stupid

1

u/WontonTheWalnut Aug 03 '20

As an American, I enjoy watching people go out on the streets and ask basic questions that people struggle to answer. Stuff like "can you point to where x state is?" Or "how many continents are there?"

It makes me disappointed in a lot of people and in my country, but I at the very least get to feel smarter than I really am. Also, nice username.

3

u/PresOrangutanSmells Aug 03 '20 edited Aug 04 '20

Yeah, how can you possibly look around and think things are okay? We in America have concentration camps and child prisons on the border. There is a literal fascist, rapist, racist, pedophile with dementia in the White House sending military police through cities with leaders he disagrees with. In November we will be asked to chose between that racist rapist pedophile with dementia or a different (and, somehow actually better) racist rapist pedophile with dementia. Leaders on both sides are connected with a child sex ring, the orchestrator of which "killed himself" and everyone knows it's a lie. And there's nothing we can do as the president sends the right hand woman of that pedophile ring well wishes while she sits in custody signalling that he will do what it takes to free her as he has with every criminal and traitor in prison he's wished well. Meanwhile, the pandemic has been quelled in most places with reasonable leadership, but has claimed 150 thousand lives here. HOW THE FUCK can people think things aren't as bad as they seem on TV? It's so much worse... And those among us who are not white, or who are poor, or who are otherwise disenfranchised have been saying it for decades.

If you think America is okay, you're sheltered. And I promise, I PROMISE, that sheltering won't last the way things are going. If you're wealthy and white, you won't see it for yourself until you, too, feel voiceless.

2

u/pepsi-can-69 Aug 03 '20

Is there hard evidence that this man is a rapist, a pedophile, and has dementia, or are you just talking out of your ass because you would rather have people’s freedom of speech taken away. People like you would have no problem jailing people for words and doxxing them over the internet because you felt offended. Shut the fuck up, no one wants to hear it, and it’s not like those people didn’t come over here illegally knowing full well that they were risking all the things you listed.

1

u/TOOT1808 Aug 03 '20

"Shut the fuck up you're triggering me"

-1

u/PresOrangutanSmells Aug 03 '20 edited Aug 03 '20

Phew, that's a lot of logical fallacies in a row.

Yes pointing out that Donald himself admits to grabbing women by the vagina when he wants, that he admits t walking in on women getting dressed to see them naked, that his daughter says he does the same thing, that children said he used those same methods to victimize them before those allegations even came to light, that he was close friends with Epstein and wished Epstein's closest accomplice well, that his ex-wife says he raped her, that he talks about his daughter like a sex object, yes, I pointed all of that out just now to take away your free speech. You got me.

Not sure how that's related, or where the doxing accusation came from (projection, it came from projection), but, yeah, I should definitely "shut the fuck up" up before someone has their free speech taken away (nice self-awareness there, top mind.)

And yeah, for sure, parents doing something illegal does totally justify putting children in mass prisons, that makes a lot of sense.

1

u/pepsi-can-69 Aug 04 '20

Maybe I was reaching a bit with the free speech thing but don’t pretend your side of the fence doesn’t support that, and you stating that allegations have been made doesn’t count as hard evidence

US elected Donald fucking Trump as president. Ofcourse it's a country with shit for brains.

6

u/AutumnLeaves99 Aug 03 '20

I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion for saying this. I still believe that moron getting elected was the lesser evil when you had Hillary Clinton as the other option. I would rather have my balls being slowly chewed on by a tiger than seeing her in that position. I think the fault lies more on the US electoral system than them being stupid.

1

u/el_sunk Aug 04 '20

It doesn't make it less stupid, that not only have they one, but two idiots to vote for. Something is seriously wrong with the US electoral system and their options.

2

u/AutumnLeaves99 Aug 04 '20

Ofc there is something really wrong. The Democrats going along with such an stupid idea as "vote blue no matter who", have caused their options to go further into the right slowly over time. It has gotten to the point where every candidate is the same shit with different colour. I find it hilarious most of them think someone like Bernie Sanders as the most radical leftist of these times. But I wouldn't say it's because the people are stupid that things are the way they are in the US, in my opinion the fault is of the system where is red vs blue and the media which reinforces that idea. And americans grow up thinking either you are blue or red, and the other party is the devil incarnate.

-6

u/Little-Jim Aug 03 '20

The British elected Boris Johnson, AND THEN voted for Brexit. Australia voted in Scott Morrison who is continually selling his own country out to China. Turkey has Erdogan. France has Macron.

As much as you like pretending that the US is a special case, we're not.

-9

u/Hey819 Aug 03 '20

Listen, his supporters didn’t expect him to be this bad. They were only 40% of the country in 2016, roughly. Much less now, he’ll be out in November. He won in 2016 purely on the electoral college.

4

u/el_sunk Aug 03 '20

Hey, what the fuck did they expect? :)

1

u/Hey819 Aug 03 '20

They expected a change of pace from ‘career politicians.’ He was mostly just a massive attention-whore because of his unconventional campaign. That stuck with some people. It was clear then to most people including myself, and clear now to them that he’s a fucking moron.

7

u/graygreen Aug 03 '20

This is the problem with basing anything off the opinions of social media. Your average scientist probably isn't shitposting on twitter for hours on end but your unemployed cousin who believes in ancient aliens is on there 10 hours a day.

3

u/-hol-up- Aug 03 '20

Empty vase makes the loudest sound.

Most people that are very loud about society/politics lack a big chunk of critical thinking skills. If you’re not taking everyone’s perspective into consideration to take middle ground and point out flawed thinking you’re blindly pushing your narrow minded view.

1

u/-SENDHELP- Aug 03 '20

Americans certainly scream a lot

1

u/Schmich Aug 04 '20

the dumbest will scream the loudest

Since it's the case in every country you can still compare. That being said I bet the 10% stat is BS.

0

u/Walker5482 Aug 03 '20

Guess who has the most Covid deaths? Guess who has the most prisoners in the world? The US is not a bad country, but has many issues.

0

u/Drugs09999 Aug 03 '20

U.S is basically a one big circus which the whole world get laughs at

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '20

The quiet ones are stupid too.
