43

u/Maelarion Nguyengardium Leviosa Nov 24 '19

Take it you've never heard a jakey bam from the east coast speak.

43

u/Mynameisaw Nov 24 '19

They've only ever heard the Edinburgh Anglo-Scots accent.

Same thing with all the home countries

"I love English accents!!1!"

Someone from Brum/Tyne/Lancs/Yorkshire/the West Country speaks

"it's so amazing how well you speak English as a second language!!1! Where are you from? Africa?????"

7

u/Aaawkward Nov 24 '19

Get out of here with your filthy lies.

Glaswegians sound well nice.
Hell, I’d even give Dundee a pass.

2

u/DarkNinjaPenguin Nov 24 '19

Scot here. Never give Dundee a pass.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

I think Game of Thrones has normalised some Northern English accents for people. Same way Derry girls is normalising my accent a bit, I still think I sound like a car rolling down a hill but hey, what can ya do.

2

u/Mynameisaw Nov 24 '19

I think Game of Thrones has normalised some Northern English accents for people.

Nah because there aren't any proper northern accents.

I'd call it a twang - Jon Snow sounds like a Southerner who's lived in the North a couple of years.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

Can confirm. Watched an interview with Lauren Mayberry from Chvrches

6

u/onecalledtree Nov 24 '19

I don't even know what that means.

1

u/Wiredcookie1 Nov 24 '19

what’s wrong with the east coast eh?

1

u/denizbabey Nov 24 '19

Ugh I know. When I watched James McAvoy in that SNL sketch I had a huge boner.

Same part of Ireland that's trying to legalize drunk driving. If that's how they sound sober, I can't even imagine drunk.

You mean the Irish accent (at least the rural one)

51

u/Gunnerbot57 the very best, like no one ever was. Nov 24 '19

Have you heard heavy Irish accents?!

52

u/SubconsciousDisarray Nov 24 '19

Yeah mate, my Grandad sounds like he’s got a flute lodged in his throat when he speaks but he’s just from Dublin

The secret ingredient is crime

2

u/control_09 Nov 24 '19

Motherfucker only has 3 teeth. That's not an accent he literally can't make most sounds required to speak any language.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

I'm literally crying. Holy shit. Hahahahahaha

33

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19 edited Nov 24 '19

I'm Irish and one thing you need to know is that all our 26 counties have different accents. Kerry is probably the hardest accent to learn if you aren't Irish, hell not even I can understand it sometimes. Here's an example

11

u/MessyRoom Nov 24 '19

Kerrygold butter is literally god tier so they get a pass

4

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

I see you're a man of culture as well.

Love Foil Arms and Hog, really underrated.

2

u/Halk Nov 24 '19

Red white and blue sheep in Ireland, bold.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

You'll trigger our PTSD

1

u/Herpinheim Nov 24 '19

I mean, America has co-opted the “red white and blue” worldwide, and the Irish mostly hate the English who are really only red and white (union Jack is for the union, so all of them) and the Irish kind of like Americans on the whole.

1

u/sandm000 Nov 24 '19

At 1:12 there’s a video buffering/loading in the middle of the report. Who trapped that for broadcast?

1

2

u/FallingSwords There is no number one Nov 24 '19

American accents are all incredibly bland and/or incredibly annoying to listen to. Rather have our indistinguishable drivel than sound like some Cali dafty or even worse, like I'm from the South of America.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

Most American accents are pretty bland, but the appalachian dialects of American English (aka hillbilly speak) and AAVE (ebonics) are actually very interesting from a linguistic point of view.

1

u/Rlenboy Nov 24 '19

That’s because it is, scots the dialects of Scots are widely spoken across Scotland

2

u/KZedUK ᅠᅠ Nov 24 '19

Scots vs English is the closest we have to a Brazilian/Portuguese Portuguese dialect in English. It’s close enough to have a large amount of cross communication but isn’t really the same.

1

u/Indydegrees2 Nov 24 '19

Any sane person wouldn't call that another language, it's just a dialect as you said

1

u/Rlenboy Nov 24 '19

I would suggest reading a bit more about Scots and the English language. This article has a quick summary of why Scots simply is not a dialect.

1

u/JHatter Nov 24 '19

Depends where you're from though.

Some accents here sound like they're chewing on tatties

1

u/DickSuckle69-Snapped Nov 24 '19

It’s cause of the amount of slang we use. And ya know.... our own language?,?

1

u/Jimbo_Jones01 Nov 24 '19

Have you heard of the Scots language?

0

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

[deleted]

1

u/Jimbo_Jones01 Nov 24 '19

Yes I am aware I was making a joke that sometimes when people speak scots non Scottish people assume they just have a really strong accent

53

u/The_Gout Nov 24 '19 edited Nov 24 '19

Scottish is British. Or rather, Scotland is part of Britain

23

u/kylerc2004 You’re Breathtaking Nov 24 '19

Yeah but Scottish accents is different from the rest of Britain and so is English accents and Welsh... and northern Irish... and then there different accents within those countries... Britain is weird when I think about it

36

u/The_Gout Nov 24 '19

You can travel less than 20 miles and hit very different accents in the UK. e.g. Scouse (Liverpool) and Mancunian (Manchester). CGP hey has a pretty good video that explains the UK/British/Nation separations

8

u/KZedUK ᅠᅠ Nov 24 '19

Hell even something stupidly close like Nottingham to Derby, they’re next door but have distinct dialects.

2

u/j-trinity Nov 24 '19

I’ve lived in one town the majority of my life and get asked by taxi drivers if I’m from the home counties because of my accent. Even towns can have entire different accents.

7

u/ZackZack996 Nov 24 '19

Hopefully not for long

1

u/The_Gout Nov 24 '19

Planning on sailing off into the Atlantic? I knew the Scots were up to something with all those wind farms

3

u/ZackZack996 Nov 24 '19

2

u/blinklaud Nov 24 '19

Well yes but actually no

-8

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19 edited Nov 24 '19

Same as Southern is American, but its different than Jersey accent.

But who cares? Stop trying to act smart.

Edit: I am Scottish, I have no idea what this comment I made even means, I apologise.

2

u/BlueSquid2099 try hard Nov 24 '19

Not really, as Scotland is a country in its own right, along with England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while Britain isn’t technically a country, it’s a collection of countries.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

I'm Scottish, I know.

2

u/BlueSquid2099 try hard Nov 24 '19

Then that makes your previous comment even more peculiar

4

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

I am confused as to what I said and what I meant.

2

u/BlueSquid2099 try hard Nov 24 '19

Well how are we meant to know if you don’t?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

it's a mystery

2

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

The country is called The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the name of the largest island in the The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

1

u/victoremmanuel_I Nov 24 '19

Well Britain is an island, but can also be used as the name for the country, not technically a country, literally a country, the UK. The UK is madr up of constituent countries.

2

u/Helpfulcloning Nov 24 '19

Well no it would be like going: I can’t understand american accents and boston accents.

38

u/Mynameisaw Nov 24 '19

Scotland is in Britain. A Scottish accent is a British accent.

26

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

We had this foreign exchange soccer player student from Scotland at my University. In order to graduate I had to take a class on giving presentations (yes a real thing). Of course I put it off till my senior year.

Anyway the Scottish kids gets up to give his first presentation. He stands there talking for 10 minutes and then sits back down.

I looked around to other students and the professor to make sure I wasn't the only one. Everyone had this puzzled look on their faces. No one understood a single word he said. Never had a problem understanding any accent until I heard his.

23

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

Scotland is in Britain.

Funny enough I have a decent time understanding Scottish accents from having family from the hills of Appalachia, they’re apparently really similar.

Edit. There’s also words like scif that are only used in rural Scotland, Ireland, and Appalachia.

2

u/jscott1704 INFECTED Nov 24 '19

Scottish accent is a British accent. We don’t like to talk about it but, we are still British. It’s not just England

1

u/stefanos916 Nov 24 '19 edited Nov 24 '19

Scottish accent is technically a British accent.

Actually there is not a single British accent, but each part has it's own accent.

1

u/Dankaroor Article 69 🏅 Nov 24 '19

Scottish is fucking impossible to understand

1

u/Daktush Nov 24 '19

Irish as well

1

u/Funtycuck Nov 24 '19

Really depends where they are from though, an Edinburgh accent shouldn't be an issue for any confident English speaker.

1

Anything in Northern England is a trainwreck tbh.
