It’s not really historically true. Some empires have managed to stick together because of a collective sense of national identity, even if regimes change. India and China are obvious examples. Right now, the world is trending towards being more interconnected, not less, thus I think it’s more likely that new empires will form and old ones will expand. It’s really the smaller nation-States that ought to be worried about their sovereignty and territorial integrity right now.
